Detailed Reviews
We had the opportunity to stay at Bird Rock in March with my daughter who was there on business. The resort is typical old school Caribbean but very comfortable. When we checked in the staff assisted us with our luggage and showed us to our room. Our room was clean, comfortable, and provided everything we needed, apart from bathroom amenities like shampoo, lotion etc.
The views from our rooms were of the Caribbean Sea and were fantastic with excellent sunsets every night.
The resort was undergoing some needed renovations and additions while we were there, the addition of a beach club and restaurant on the water is something that we really loved.
The staff was awesome and always had a smile for us, they worked very hard and always treated us like family.
The grounds are well kept and full of beautiful plants, there are however some maintenance issues that need to be addressed with the rooms and buildings. In our room and the adjoining room, the sliding glass doors to the balcony needed to be fixed as they were difficult to operate, and the locks did not work. The rooms need to be updated and some attention paid to details like cables that were just hanging out of the wall with no wall plates.
The pool was clean and there were plenty of lounge chairs, also some shade if you wanted to get out of the sun. They were just finishing the new swim up bar which will be a welcome addition to the pool area.
Although the bathrooms functioned properly and we had hot water and good water pressure, they could use an update to the plumbing fixtures. Some new bath towels are needed, bathroom amenities like shampoo and lotion would be a good addition. Beach towels would also be a great addition.
The things that will bring us back to Bird Rock are the staff and the owner Mr. Richards who made our stay so special.

This hotel was clean and the front desk staff were pleasant. The view from our balcony and the pool was spectacular. They seem to be in the middle of expanding. Our room was clean and comfortable. The 2 restaurants available have limited menus but the food is adequate. The only real issue for me was that we stayed for 4 days and the pool was never cleaned and it needed it. It was very quiet which is what we were looking for. Attached to the hotel area is a dolphin training site so you can watch the staff feed and train the dolphins during the day. This is certainly not a classy hotel but it is clean and quiet. Perfect for a rest. It also has a diving operation attached to it.

I again was able to make it to St. Kitts and stayed at the Bird Rock Beach Hotel. The hotel is still locally owned and operated and feels very much like the Caribbean I have read about. The room I had was very clean and comfortable. The bathroom is small but clean and adequate. Both WiFi and the air conditioning worked very well.
I personally enjoyed the pool but especially the beach. I was able to snorkel right from the shore around the rocks that protect the beach and there were tons of fish. I'm not a diver but the diver operation was running after the Covid shutdown.
The restaurant/bar is right on the water and I thought the food was very good. Everything I ate there was cooked to order.
There are no elevators and the hotel rooms are one story up from the beach/restaurant/dive shop. So if you have a mobility problem this is probably not the right place for you.
So my post-Covid review summary is the same as from what I experienced five years ago so I'll repeated it now: "Overall this is not a great choice if you expect a US-style hotel but if you are looking for a friendly, truly Caribbean experience for a reasonable rate this is an excellent choice."

An out of the way hotel with idyllic views of the sea and mountains, lovely or you think. This is a hotel where the dolphins housed in pools in the facility below, leap of out the ocean to catch a glimpse of the poor unsuspecting patrons of the Bird Rock Beach Hotel about to royally rinsed out of their hard earned cash. There is a pool but don’t sit still in it or you will notice the scum that settles on your skin and then think about the distinct lack of chlorine. They advertise Wi-Fi but that doesn’t mean in all areas or all of the time. Meeting with the owner to discuss concerns is to experience a relic for a by gone era who definitely thought women should be seen and not heard. Dismissive and elusive speaking, with him was like trying to carry sand in a sieve. The owner claimed to have provided an upgrade so in fairness to all parties it should be mentioned in my review, however swapping out a queen sized bed for a moth infested sofa bed, even if the room came with a microwave didn’t seem like an improvement to me. He had taken our money and that was all he was interested in. Whether his establishment provided the services advertised on Booking.com was not his problem. “I am not interested in hearing a litany of things wrong with this place….if you want to leave just go!” Not what you want to hear when you are thousands of miles away from home without hot water, patchy Wi-Fi, having to collect scratchy towels from your old room, and it taking two people to drag open the patio door (to the sea view) and our only fire exit. Oh and did I mention the cockroaches? On the ceiling in the bath, in the doorways. I digress. The website stated at the time we booked that there was a restaurant available to provide breakfast only however this has not been open since Covid 19. Instead you are handed a phone and told to call a food delivery service, the first day they let you watch the dolphins from owners office in the hope you don’t get too angry that they have misrepresented themselves. The days after that, it is up you as there aren’t any phones in the room and if you’re international traveller and stuck in one of their Wi-Fi less rooms and don't have transport arranged, your in trouble. Feral animals (ok cats) roam the hotel. The staff tell you different stories about why things are malfunctioning, why the lighting didn't work or why the walls were crumbling. I don’t think I need to say it, but I will, I can’t recommend it , do not stay here. We had to check out long before our stay was due to be over and got our money back for the remainder but as far as I am concerned were not compensated for our horrendous experiences.

I wish I can give this place 0 stars. I went there end of the year cause my friend was staying in that area (bird rock), and the hotel seemed to be closest to her. When I arrived, I had to wait outside for 30 mins cause no one was there to check me in. The office lights were off. When I got to my room, the it wasn’t as described in the pictures. The curtains were torn and old, bathroom wasn’t the best condition, my sliding door couldn’t close properly, and on top of that NO HOT WATER. After my second night I complained about the hot water, and I was offered a different. When I moved to the other room, there still wasn’t hot water, and to add insult to injury, my door knob came out when I returned from the party. I text the property and the lock could get fixed until after 9AM. It was such a horrible experience. At that point, I cancelled the second half of my reservation and booked a different hotel. The next morning I saw the owner Mr. richards, I approached him and he said he doesn’t know how all these issues are happening, and he doesn’t want to hear anything more from me. He was very rude and unwilling to help my issues. He said, I’ll be going somewhere else anyways. The lock was fixed and i was leaving the next day, I asked them to fix the hot water and no response. The manager wasn’t any help neither. I requested a refund cause of the horrible experience, the manager lied and said that they moved me to another room. Thankfully I have screenshots of messages cause we communicated via text on WhatsApp.
The only GOOD thing at that hotel were the two women that worked at the restaurant Brighteye and Alexis. They made my breakfast good, they were very kind to me. They tried their best to make me feel better, but it’s only so much they could’ve done. I appreciate those women very much. Outside of them, it was a nightmare and the worst hotel I ever stayed at.

The scenery is beautiful. The rooms are comfortable. You can go swimming with the dolphins right there for a price. The staff is very caring, friendly and helpful. There is one major issue I found, the internet system needs updating. Wifi cuts off too often, drop calls often

This is not a good place to stay, unclean rude and unhelpful staff, lacking the bare basics like towels in the room. Seriously avoid, if you don't care for the pool which is old and dirty (like the rest of the place then avoid this and go somewhere cheaper cleaner and more pleasant. No towels in the room, the place both inside and out looks so run down and old, the bed sheets were unclean. The staff at front desk couldn't help with anything and were so rude and unkind.
The complex seems to be shared with a school/church so when by the pool we had sermons being shared out loud and kids watching the pool, constantly going past, it was so weird.
This is one of the worst places I've stayed. AVOID

My partner and I, a couple of thirty-somethings, have just retuned from 2 weeks at Bird Rock Beach. Overall, we had a great time in St Kitts - we love the Caribbean having been to Antigua nd St Lucia already - but we would not return to the hotel or island, for many reasons.
Bird Rock Beach hotel is in a great location, only a short taxi from the airport and in the middle of the isalnd making day trips out and about to any location easy. HOWEVER, we were not told that the 'beach' at the hotel - which we knew was small from other reviews here - would be closed along with Rocky's Bar & Grill (one of the hotel's three restaurants) AND Dianne's Restaurant (the hotels A La Carte restaurant). We were lucky that we did not take the All Inclusive package as those visitors that were only had one restaurant to eat in everyday and it was one with a very limited menu.
This meant that we also only had one bar - the pool swim-up bar which was deserted as there were builders working on the lower beach/marina and Rocky's Bar durinf the day and it was very noisy having a JCB working in your ear!
The hotel does provide a free shuttle to and from the nearest beach at Frigate Bay - which is a great beach - but the hotel takes you at 10am and picks you up at 2pm - when they remember too come and get you (!!) so your day is cut short when you could have relaxed to have a lovely lunch at the Monkey Bar (highly recommended) or Mr X's Shiggedy Shack (great on Thursday evenings 'Bar-b-q Night). So we only took the one way trip and took taxis home at our leisure.
Eating and getting around St Kitts is not cheap, so bring plenty of Eastern Caribbean or US Dollars. Restauants have to charge quite a lot as we were told that import duty for the island is 55%, so everything is expensive - even washing powder was £5-10!
Taxi's range from $10 US for a short trip up to $80 US for a trip around the island, so hiring a car, at least for part of your holiday is a must!
When you have the freedom of a car (Only $40 US for a small car for a day and better rates for a week - 7 days for 5 deals at Avis in Bassterre). Avis also have a pick up and return service for you and the car, so that is great if you are not staying near Bassterre.
Beaches - If you like a relaxing, quite time with very few people, then South Friars Bay is the beach for you (Bar-b-q pork loin lunch at Mongoose Bar is recommended). Slightly more lively beaches, with bars, music, and good food are Turtle Beach and Frigate Bay. Each beach has a different activity on it per night, so ask the locals were the party is if local rum and music is your thing.
However, even party night is really a safe and tame affair - most bars close at 10pm - Ziggy's, Shiggedy Shack and Inon's are open til late - so I would not say that the island is for you if you are looking for a thumping nightlife.
In the end, we had a very relaxing holiday, with great weather, extremely friendly people, and ok food - quite samey wherever you go, ribs, chicken, shrimp, burgers with eitjer fries or rice - and not many veg or even fruit platters offered.
A recommeded day trip to organise is the Spirit of St Kitts catamaran to Nevis and the rain forest/volcano tour by Greg.
In summary, the Bird Rock Beach is a nice, quiet hotel in a good location, but is not fully operational and will not be for some months although the hotel say it will all be open by 'mid December'.
Other hotels we would like to have stayed at once we saw them were Ocean Terrace Inn, Timothy Beach or Sugar Bay - the Marriot complex looked huge and clinical.
St Kitts is turning to tourism as the sugar industry is ceasing this year and there iis aggressive building going on all over the islad - a shame as it will lose a lot of its charm very soon......

My husband and I stayed at the Bird Rock Beach Resort from January 10-16, 2005. We fell in love with St. Kitts and we will return in the future, definitely!!! The Bird Rock was a quaint resort. Very private most of the time and the staff were very friendly and helpful! The room was average, nothing very luxurious, but we expected it after doing a little research on the resort! We had an amazing view of the ocean and especially enjoyed watching the sunsets every evening and also watching the cruise ships come in most every day! We enjoyed drinking our coffee out on the balcony every morning being greeted by the many birds around the resort. The Bird Rock was nice if you want to kick back and relax with some alone time. It was not a resort to "hang around" for most of the day. Not a lot to do, although there is a scuba site right there if you are into scuba diving! (We are not!). The restaurant was delicious, we ate there a couple of evenings. We enjoyed the pool, it was refreshing and clean!!! We highly recommend renting a car, although we did take a taxi the first day (but it can add up, especially if you want to see the gorgeous beaches at the Southeast penninsula). We rented a car for 2 days and it was AMAZING seeing the island!!!! The beaches were very private, some days we were the only 2 on the beach!! Basseterre was a great town, we enjoyed walking around and having dinner! The people were always friendly! Overall, this was one of our favorite vacations! We absolutely love St. Kitts, next time we also want to see Nevis!!!!

We stayed at the Bird Rock from April 22nd through the 29th and chose this hotel after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor. We definitely made the right choice as we loved both the location and the fact that it's much cozier than staying at a mega resort such as the Marriott. I'm glad we upgraded to a room with a kitchen. We were on the 2nd floor and there is nothing better than sitting on our balcony in the morning drinking coffee and eating bread (which we purchased down the street at the Fancy Loaf Bakery) with views of both Nevis and Basseterre. Our kitchen had shutters which opened right up to the balcony. It was a nice feature. We had a king size bed which was comfortable and a TV with HBO. We moved into this room after the shower had problems in our original room and was glad we switched because the first room had a harder queen size bed and although that room was bigger, the layout of the kitchen was different. It was located right as you entered the room.
We didn't eat at the hotel. We ate at the Rock Lobster in Frigate Bay, The Sprat Net near Old Road Town, and our favorite Mr.X's Shiggity Shack. The food was great and very reasonable and that is where all the action is. It opens at 6pm. Get there early as they run out of lobster fast.
We gambled in the casino at the Marriott and got lucky.(It paid for our room for the week!) I used the computers in the business center there, $5 for half an hour. If you like to be with a lot of noisy tourists stay at the Marriott. All these resorts look the same no matter where in the world you are. If you don't need glitz and glamour and prefer the local flavor, basic needs, and quiet nights, stay at the Bird Rock.
We snorkeled right at the little beach there. They also have a dive shop there. Go to Turtle Beach to see Wilbur the famous 700 lb pig. There are wild monkeys and goats and cattle all over. Be careful because they're in the road too. We went on an ATV tour of the rainforest at Fun Bikes at the Lodge Great House. It was the highlight of our trip. We had a great time with Lewis our guide.
The staff at the Bird Rock were very friendly. The fact that some people left reviews saying that staff weren't friendly is confusing to me. We were hugged goodbye. We met some great people there. Especially Liz at the office and Kent the dive captain. The place is very clean and the pool was crystal clear. We had perfect weather and only saw about 10 mosquitos.
A rental car is a must. For only $240 US a week with a AAA discount plus tax, fuel, and $24 for St. Kitts temporary license at Thrifty, for a compact automatic, how could we go wrong? I booked it on the Thrifty site before we left the States. We explored the entire island and Thrifty has a deal where if you rent at least 3 days, they will give you a complimentary car on the island of Nevis. We drove to the ferry in Basseterre, parked the car for no charge, got on the ferry at 7 AM (the $8 per person each way is worth it alone as the views are awesome) for the 45 minute ride to Nevis. At the port in Nevis Thrifty has an office which opens at 8 AM. Our car was waiting. We drove aound the entire island, swam and snorkeled at Pinney's Beach (We had the beach all to ourselves) returned the car and were back on the ferry at 1 PM.
In all, we loved St. Kitts and the Bird Rock and plan to return soon. It was paradise there and very stress free.

It depends on what you call walking distance. The hotel is uphill from everything. The cab fare from the hotel to the stadium will be less than $20, ask at the hotel for recommendations.
I loved the hotel!
It looks like, using Google Earth, that the hotel and stadium are maybe three or four city blocks apart. From my memory, the roads are not that conducive to walking, but many people walk. If you are going to the music festival (I'm SO jealous!) then there will be many people walking back and forth.
Remember, always use the buddy system :-) and negotiate taxi fares before you get in the taxi. Do not flash money around. St. Kitts was a blast, and I can't wait to go back!!
Drove from East Coast of Florida. No pickup service as small. Suggest that you install Lyft and then check cost from airport to hotel at the same time of the day that you are traveling.
