This beautiful unspoiled property in Andros provided great scuba diving and hammock sitting. The staff is incredible. Yente, Dylan, Ricardo, Brad, Montene and Dennis. They are all amazing people that make you feel like a friend from the moment you arrive until you leave. Along the way we went to a national park blue hole for a private family outing complete with transportation and refreshments by a very nice man named Alvin who also happens to make the greatest conch ceviche ever! A boat dropped us at a private island for another outing.
The mangroves behind the beach revealed crystal clear water, a few turtles and a ray. The resort stashed some kayaks (with paddles and vests) behind the palm trees to allow guests to go at their leisure.
Leisure is the word at this resort. It is quiet and peaceful with multiple hammocks and spaces to chill.
The best personal service we have ever received. Every day we were asked if anything was needed. Did we want to do anything else?
The scuba team and diving were super. A shark dive, blue hole and deep wall dive provided an underwater playground. The staff made diving fun.
Did I mention drinks? Ice water and bottled beer are always available at the bar and of course you must try one or all of the mixed drinks!
Our room was cozy and spotless and there was fresh water available to drink in the room as well. We loved the outdoor shower!
Small Hope Bay Lodge is an incredibly special place. We absolutely loved it!

My boyfriend and I visited Small Hope last week as our first trip since March. I was very nervous about traveling, but the staff was incredibly cognizant of ensuring we felt comfortable throughout the entirety of our stay. There was hand sanitizer all over the place, and the staff wore masks at all times. The food is phenomenal as are the drinks and you truly feel like family by the end of your stay. As for activities, the location, diving, and fishing are exactly what you would expect from the Bahamas- absolutely beautiful and world-class. We dove four days of our trip and were thrilled to learn the dive masters took our preferences into consideration when planning the next day's activities. We were able to dive a blue hole, wrecks, caverns, and even took part in a night dive that was a pretty unique experience. I caught the biggest bonefish I have ever seen while fishing which also made the trip unforgettable! Overall, our entire stay was phenomenal. The staff, service, activities, food, and family environment truly make Small Hope one of a kind.

Hi Elizabeth, Thank you so much for your very kind review of Small Hope. I know this year has been a frustrating year travel-wise and we so appreciate you trusting in us to keep you happy and healthy. I am so happy to know you felt comfortable through your stay, and recognised the little ways we have adjusted to honor COVID protocols while still maintaining our laidback, family vibe. It sounds like you really took advantage of all we have to offer on Andros. You're right - the island is beautiful, the fishing is world class, and our diverse diving program can cater to all sorts of interests and skill levels. Night Dives are a once-in-a-blue-moon experience and one that I know you won't soon forget! I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and that we will see you again very soon.

My husband and I spent a week at Small Hope and wish we could have stayed longer. It is a little slice of paradise where you can spend the day feeling like there is no one for miles and then gather in the afternoon at the bar to hang out with the other guests and staff.

Dennis, Ricardo, Kate, Dan, and all the staff absolutely made our stay and will go out of their way to make sure you are enjoying your time. Dennis had so much patience with me during the Discover Scuba experience and I really appreciated him taking extra time to make sure I was comfortable.

We fished two half days with Glaister and caught a ton of bonefish, and he improved our fly casting immensely with just a 10-minute lesson. We kayaked over to Crystal Beach, waded the flats there, and followed a bonefish school for hours, catching several more. My husband also caught a good-sized snapper off the dock and the kitchen staff prepared it for us for dinner.

There are plenty of things to do if you aren't fishing or diving, and some of the highlights for us were the shark snorkel, getting dropped off at Goat Cay for our own private island experience, biking to the blue hole, snorkeling around the dock, and kayaking Davis Creek.

Every meal was delicious and Chef Don even made a special Key Lime Pie for my husband's birthday that I will never outdo. In the morning you can order hot breakfast with eggs, bacon, toast, omelets, etc. or sample the Bahamian breakfast. Lunch and dinner are served on the patio with plenty of choices including salads, soups, fish, meat, and sides. You can help yourself to the cooler of Kaliks, order a cocktail from the menu, or have the bartender make something up for you.

The rooms are bright, spacious, and clean with comfortable beds but the showers are very small, although some of the cabins have outdoor showers. We paid the $15/night for the air conditioning in July and thought it was worth it, although the fan did keep it fairly cool when we had the air off during the day. I loved the lounge with its communal library where you can take or leave a book, games, or sunscreen if you run out.

I can see why so many guests are repeat visitors. The location is amazing, it's not at all crowded, there is plenty to do, and the staff make you feel like family. We hope to come back soon!

Dear Adrienne It was a pleasure to meet you are your husband! We had a great time with the two of you here at Small Hope. I like to think of Small Hope as being one big family where you can totally just be yourself weather you spend your day with some R,R and R (relaxation, restore and rediscover) or weather you fill your days with some of the activities that we have to offer. I am glad to see that you made use of our resort course and that you experienced the magic of the underwater world with my staff. My staff pride themselves in presenting just the best for our guests and well Don does make one good Key Lime Pie. We also love to take birthdays very seriously and make you feel special on the day. I hope that we will see you again soon now that you are part of the Small Hope family!

We have a small, private plane, and a friend recommended Small Hope Bay Lodge, so it seemed to be a perfect place to fly to from the Panhandle of Florida.

Traveling during the pandemic can be challenging with testing requirements, health visas, and safety-first mindset.

Small Hope nailed it with guidance on testing, exceptional covid protocols in place at the lodge, and who could ever complain about the required test to reenter the United States when they came to us during Happy Hour and told us they were ready to test us, just 50 feet away in their office.

Private plane travel also had its challenges, with weather and mechanical issues always a factor. Our first attempt to visit left us stranded partway there, waiting on a part. Our Bahamas Health Visa expired the day before the part arrived. SHB was very understanding, and we were thrilled that they just held our deposit for another visit.

Upon our 2nd attempt, we had a tire issue; Delayed yet again! However, we made it a day late, and because they are not a total capacity right now, we were able to extend a day to make up for it.

SHB is like going to stay with family. Every day was greeted with home-cooked breakfast made to order and folks asking, "What would you like to do today?" They would give us countless options from snorkeling to kayaking, bike riding, bonefishing, and we instantly knew we had to return for more time there.

The incredibly pristine waters and quiet setting will make it struggle to leave and will certainly lure you to return. Many guests are repeat visitors for decades!

If you are looking for a Sandals type all-inclusive, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a Bahamian experience with casual relaxation, immaculate accommodations, perfect views, and pristine island waters, you should go to Small Hope, for at least a week.

Pros:
Large rooms
Very Clean
Lots of spaces to relax away from others if you like
Waterside bar with any drink you want and other guests to socialize with
AC in bedrooms for a small extra fee, but we did not need it
Super friendly and helpful staff and owner

Cons:
It can be a challenge to get there (but maybe that's a pro!)
Wifi is only in the lodge lobby. (we work while we travel)

Hi Sandra, Thank you so much for taking your friend's recommendation and coming to stay with us on Andros! I know it can be more challenging to get here (maybe that is a good thing for some!) but I appreciate that you persevered with travel hiccups and finally made it. We have been open since November, and we've managed to adhere to the Bahamian Covid protocols, to maintain our own safety protocols, and still hopefully make everyone feel comfortable and relaxed. Thanks for trusting in us to keep you safe. Being a family owned resort, we like to treat all our guests like an extended member of the family! And with some many repeat guests, it often feels like one extended family reunion around here! We look forward to welcoming you back again to Andros as part of the Small Hope family. My staff and I are so happy to help our guests have the most rewarding experience possible, and with so many activities available both on the property and in the area there's no shortage of fun to be hand! I'm proud to be the anti-Sandals and give people an intimate, unique all inclusive experience while still offering an authentic taste of The Bahamas.

We put together a short notice trip, about 3 and a half weeks from planning to arrival. 4 small planes flew over and one couple came commercially bringing 11 friends to the Small Hope Bay Lodge. Scuba was our main focus and the weather tried to intervene against us, but we persevered. Some high seas and winds made for challenging conditions, but the boat and dive team made the best of it. They know their area well, and picked sites and locations that made tough conditions safe and workable.

The resort itself was just what we needed, very laid back, comfortable and welcoming. The small staff made you feel like family and we ate and drank quite well. Everyone had really missed travel with the Covid situation in 2020, so this was a very welcome respite. Bahamas Covid rules meant we were all tested negative (PCR) before getting our travel Visas. Most of our group was vaccinated or had recovered from Covid so we felt comfortable. The staff was very consistent about wearing masks at all times, adding to our comfort level.

The Small Hope Bay Lodge is a bit of a throwback to the old Bahamas, it was founded about 70 years ago by Dick Birch, father of current owner Jeff Birch. My wife's dad got his scuba rating there from Dick in 1965, we also found that one of our party had dived there for a week in 1993, hitting many of the same sites we did. The lodge, while quite comfortable, is not a place with a lot of glass, leather and marble.. more stone, wood, and sand.

I highly recommend the Small Hope Bay Lodge, we will, like most of their clients, be returning... Bill and Sara Legard

Hi Bill and Sara, Thank you again for coming to stay with us on Andros, and for bringing your wonderful group of friends! We absolutely loved seeing you and it's always a special treat to welcome private pilots to the resort. Thank you for trusting in us to keep you all safe and happy and healthy, especially given the Covid situation. Thank you for being so understanding with the weather. We know you wanted to dive as much as possible, and we do our best to get our guests out for the most dives possible, while still keeping everyone safe in transit. You're right - Small Hope has been diving here on the Andros Barrier Reef since the 1960s and we have a long history of welcoming divers. It's very cool to know that, just within your group, we've welcomed a few generations of divers. We do truly feel like our guests become a part of the family, and we especially love seeing families of divers grow and change and come back again and again to experience our beautiful reef.

My wife and I spent a week at Small Hope the week before Thanksgiving. It was our first time travelling with our 11-month old son, so we had our share of nerves about what to expect. Small Hope Lodge and it's wonderful staff made the trip an absolute joy from start to finish!!

There was a perfect crib set up for us in our private cabin, a brand new high chair in the guest lodge, and a very sweet babysitter lined up for the week during cocktail hour and dinner. Each night we were able to put our son to sleep and have the babysitter stay in our cabin so we could enjoy a few hours of cocktail hour and dinner!

We spent 6 days enjoying the beautiful grounds and beaches, eating incredibly tasty food, and taking an excursion to the inland blue holes. The entire staff felt like family by the end of the week, and showed us and our son so much love and were eager to make every part of our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

As an avid fly fisherman, I spent 2 days of guided fishing with Glister Wallace, who was a phenomenal guide and person. I spent one of the days fishing with him and his son, who he is training to be a guide himself, and it felt like I was fishing with old friends after only a couple of days. I also had a great time fishing around the lodge throughout the week and landed several large barracuda, snapper and needlefish.

Overall, Small Hope Bay Lodge is the perfect mix of remoteness, rustic, comfort, family-feel and adventure. We can't thank the staff enough for making our first family vacation a wonderful success and for making us feel at home. We cannot wait to return!

Hi Scott, Thank you very much for your kind words - we loved having you and your family at Small Hope and we are thrilled to know you had a great first vacation with your infant son. We know traveling with kids of all ages can be challenging and we really strive to make it as easy and relaxing as possible for our guests traveling with babies. We love to have kids at the resort but want our adult guests to have a little time during cocktail hour and dinner to have some adult time with each other and the other guests so it's great to hear that you were happy with the accommodations we provide for our youngest guests :) It sounds like you and your family were able to enjoy all that Andros and Small Hope have to offer: beautiful beaches, world class fishing, amazing nature tours, and the best food and drinks in the out islands! We hope to have you back to Small Hope soon - once you visit, you are a part of the Small Hope family!

We had kind of mixed feelings after just getting back from Small Hope. This was my first trip with my son and for the most part we enjoyed our trip.

First the pros: simply outstanding diving hands down. The next time I go, I would ask for specialty dives every day. They are DECO dives run but experts and I felt totally safe yet experienced dives I could never find elsewhere. My son and I are advanced open water. We did the blue hole second level and stayed at 160 feet for almost 30 mins with Nitrox DECO for another 20 mins. Alexis and Danny guided us through the most terrific time of our lives. The trip was worth it just for the dive alone. Small Hope offers other specialty dives. The other pro was the staff in general who waited on us hand and foot. Simply amazing service all around by cheerful staff. Unmatched anywhere. There's a deserted island a 10 minute boat ride from the resort. The crew took me to the island, set me up with chair, umbrella, cooler with food - then picked me up 2 hours later. No extra charge. Simply wonderful. Third pro - the food. Abundant, tasty and variety. Just ask and they'll make it for you. Kudos to the chef!

Now the cons: the rooms are probably the original rooms from 1960 when the resort first opened. No furniture (aside from uncomfortable beds), no TV, extra charge if you want to use the a/c. Everything was damp, no place to put your clothes so you lived out of your suitcase. The other "con" is that this place really does cater to the returning guest (of which most were). We felt that questions to Jeff (the owner) were an irritation to him so it left us with a cold feeling at times.

Would we return - probably so just for the diving. The staff, food, and diving were tremendous. I wouldn't bring my wife thought. She likes a comfortable room for sure. At $1000 a day for two, kind of expect a little nicer accommodations but I do understand that Andros is off the beaten track so I can see why it was pricey. If you love to dive and want unmatched beaches, this is worth checking out.

Hi Lloyd, Thanks for your thoughtful review and honesty. It sounds like for the most part you had a wonderful vacation with us. I'm thrilled to know you were so happy diving with us. Diving our ocean Blue Hole is an incredible experience and the second level of the Blue Hole is magical. We were delighted to share that with the two of you. I'm happy to know you felt comfortable and safe experiencing the high level of diving we offer. I'm very proud of the service our staff provides to guests - we thoroughly enjoy showing our guests a great experience whether it's cooking delicious food, setting you up for a little desert island getaway - even if it's just for a few hours - or taking you to the reef for an awesome dive. The cabins are our original cabins- recently remodeled but you are right- they are simple & straightforward. All of our furniture is made here at the lodge and we don’t have televisions, phones or WiFi in our rooms. It might be an anachronism but I still believe, as my father did in 1960, that there’s value in disconnecting with the world and reconnecting with each other. We have made the concession for WiFi being available (outside of cocktail hour) in the main lodge and free calls to the US in our office because I know we do have to be more connected than in the past. I also want to say sorry if you ever felt that I personally was not welcoming to you. We do have a lot of return guests but they all start out like you and your family: first time visitors trusting us to introduce them to the beauty of Andros. I hope you return to Andros and Small Hope soon to experience again our hospitality, beautiful beaches, and world class diving. And when you do- just remember, you are now part of our Small Hope Family as well.

I had the most wonderful time at Small Hope Bay. The quaint location was perfect for celebrating a dear friend's 50th birthday. The diving was amazing, the food delicious, the staff made us all feel at home. Small Hope Bay is a casual, rustic hotel that is right on the beach and very close to unbelievable diving. The dive staff are professional and knowledgeable about the area and how to protect it. I didn't want to leave, and hope I will be able to bring my family to Small Hope Bay in the near future so they can get their certification and dive with me.

Whether you just want to enjoy your toes in the sand or be constantly on the move, SHB is the place. The dive staff and diving were great. I completed my Open Water certification with Dan, Kate, Dennis, and Ricardo and the experience couldn’t have been better. Dan encouraged me to do the Blue Hole before leaving and I’m so glad I did. Next time, shark dive! The food and hospitality were fantastic. Every meal was wonderful and we loved talking with the hospitality staff. The sites were spectacular- we kayaked in the mangroves, paddled out to Goat Caye for a private afternoon in the sun, we took a bike ride to the beautiful Somerset Beach where we were the only humans for miles and miles, we spent several days bone-fishing on the flats and lost count of catches. What an adventure! After a week in paradise, I can see why people keep going back

I’ve been to big all-inclusive resorts, but the feel at SHB is like hanging out with a family you love. Before I was even home from SHB, I was dreaming of the next trip. We’ll be back for sure!

The dudes perspective! I liked that it is such a casual place, our cottage was a great size for a couple or single, clean fresh sheets and towels everyday if you want. Housekeeping was very good. I usually do fishing trips that range from rustic to hardcore backpacking, so this was luxury to me. This fishing was solid, first day was a challenge because of weather, but Glister (the guide) worked very hard to get on bonefish. Days two and three were very good and we picked up a huge bonus in the form of a Tarpon. I was not expecting any shots at tarpon, so picking up my first was super fun! Food was served buffet style behind a plexiglass screen (thanks to Covid...) Really good variety and quality. The "Ambassadors" Dan, Kate, Ricardo and Dennis were great. They were knowledgeable, safe and made the diving a very good experience. Interesting to talk to and to get to know. SHB is on our list to revisit and I am really looking forward to seeing the whole crew again!

Hi Woody, Thank you very much for coming to stay with us on Andros! You're right - this is a great place to come if you want to really let loose and unwind on the beach and snooze in a hammock, or if you want to have an action-packed schedule, or a combination of the two! Thank you for trusting in us to complete your Open Water certification. We feel like, doing the book work at home and completing your open water dives in the crystal clear ocean water surrounding us is the way to go! Best way to maximise your time, and really get a great sense for what diving offers. I"m so glad you enjoyed our Ocean Blue Hole dive. That is truly one of a kind experience, and singular experience for any diver, beginner to advanced. Beyond the diving, it sounds like you were able to get a great sense of the other wonderful activities we enjoy on Andros. I'm glad you were so charmed by the resort, our hospitality team, and by the lure of the island itself and we look forward to having you back soon!

I have been to Small Hope Bay Lodge five times. My group of diver friends rates Small Hope Bay Lodge as our gold standard. The staff are very pleasant and accommodating to all of our needs.. It's obvious that they like what they do, while creating a friends and family bond.

There are so many spectacular dive sites and the boat is only steps away from the cabins.

The food, drinks and accommodations are the perfect combination of casual, clean, and customizable for great relaxation in the Caribbean.

Jeff and Brian are extraordinarily committed to customer service, Anastasia cheerfully guided us through the entire booking. We were so excited with our Dive masters Brian & Dennis (again), Dan, Kate, and Cedar. who kept us safe and let us play. I'm sorry I don't recall all of the rest of the names: the humble bartender
(Ricardo?), great kitchen staff, meticulous housekeepers/groundskeepers and guys who worked extra to get another boat running .

2020 COVID protections were exemplary.. The staff at Small Hope Bay Lodge were Extremely Cautious and attentive in both respiratory and contact safety. It is obvious that they take this very seriously and we all appreciated their precautions. The Bahamas Visa requirements made it difficult for us to get a PCR test and Visa quick enough, but the staff at Small Hope Bay Lodge went above and beyond to work through these hurdles to take some of these added stresses away from us.

Our group of regular dive buddies ask, "why look anywhere else?"

Hi Eddie, Wow. The gold standard. That is truly high praise, and I cannot thank you enough for returning to Small Hope again and again all these years. We have been diving here since 1960 but this year has been particularly challenging for so many folks, and I am happy to know you feel like part of the Small Hope family. My staff, from the office to the kitchen to the dive boat to the maintainance team all are here because they love what they do, and it makes groups like yours a pleasure to be here. I am glad you were treated well by all. We have been doing our best to maintain safety and high sanitation standards here, in all departments, and I'm glad you noticed and appreciated it. The extra hurdles we are jumping to process visas and tests are a pain, but we are happy to help our guests through the process, and really appreciate you trusting in us and traveling during this crazy year. We can't wait to see you in the water again! Cheers.

We were there last week and at the resort and while we were fishing we got excellent service. We could even FaceTime our kids and had a couple zoom meetings. Was not great on the dive boat but I didn’t expect it.
