This place was a perfect place to start a trip to the Mercantour Park, being at the start of a walking route to the Vallée des Merveilles. The staff and ambiance were welcoming and everyone was friendly and relaxed. It’s a bit like a slightly posher and bigger refuge with a bar and very simple private rooms available (one shared bathroom to two rooms). Great location .. just the sound of rushing water from the waterfall. I thought it was great value and would recommend it to any walker. Early start breakfast from 7am and packed lunches available. There was a slightly noisy school party but that could happen anywhere. They seemed to finally pipe down after setting off the fire alarm at midnight.

My father and I stayed here (fourth time for me). We were greeted by the ever-friendly proprietors, and enjoyed a comfortable and clean room. Having stayed here before, I contacted the hotel directly to book - they often have availability when you contact them directly, even if they appear booked out on online websites. The hotel is simple, yet tasteful, and is usually filled with nature lovers and hikers. While you won't find luxury amenities here, the atmosphere is informal and friendly at all times. Having arrived directly from the airport on a Sunday, we were unable to pick up any water since any nearby shops were closed. They were happy to give us a bottle for our hike on Monday (to Lac Autier - a beautiful walk nearby that we highly recommend) and made a point of not charging us for it. A point to note is that this is a forest/mountain area with very few shops, etc. around, so be sure to factor that into your planning. Also note that there is no mobile phone reception in the area. We hope to return many more times.

We spent a very nice long weekend at Hotel du Grand Capelet. The hotel is nice with comfy rooms, cosy sofas by the fire and a nice terrace. The hosts go out of their way to make you feel welcome and their food is simply amazing. Stunning surroundings and the huge choice of hiking and climbing destinations make this place just incredible.

This valley is well worth the trip to get up to. It is full of wildlife and world-class mountain trekking, climbing etc. The hosts, Marion & Gabriel, were extremely welcoming and low key. They live there with their family and you feel like you're a guest in their home. The food (we ate breakfast and dinner at the inn and took their picnic lunch on our hikes) was absolutely top notch. They were very accomodating on food preferences and the drinks were great too (they had several house-made fruit-based liqueurs that were quite tasty). The room was very comfortable and rustic with wood paneling and simple furniture. Gabriel speaks excellent english so communication is never a problem for those who don't speak french. He is also an accomplished mountain guide and can help you select a good hiking route for your abilities/interests in the area. The atmosphere was just completely relaxing the whole time we were there. They have 4 pet chickens which are also quite nice.

My husband and I just spent 5 days at the wonderful Hotel du Grand Capelet. The hosts are a lovely couple, very laid back and helpful. The rooms are not fancy, but they are extremely clean and tidy and everything you need after a tiring day hiking one of the many trails in the area. The food was a real highlight - delicious, copious home-cooked meals every night and excellent breakfasts with a choice of yummy, freshly made pastries, fresh yoghurt and home made jams. We particularly appreciated the picnic lunch packs too, which have just the right amounts and types of foods for hungry hikers. And of course the hotel is situated in the stunning Gordolasque valley - stupendous for hiking or meandering around the meadows in the valley. I really recommend this hotel.

The hotel itself easily gets three stars, the setting gives it its fourth, and the owners give it its fifth. This hotel is located near a very remote village at the end of a crazily narrow road – with views of mountains, snow peaks and wild animals. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, being a little more than basic, but impeccably clean and well-tended. There is little that you could really want in addition to what the hotel already offers (OK, it’s not a 5-star, full-service resort, but if you’re thinking of staying here, that’s not what you’re looking for anyway), and everything is incredibly comfortable and inviting. The owners are friendly and knowledgeable about the local area (and the entire region), and go above and beyond to make their guests comfortable. As someone who keeps Kosher, I bring my own food and am used to eating in my room or outside. The owner practically insisted that I eat in the main dining room, despite the fact that there was no revenue opportunity. He even laid the table for us – clearly, the comfort and satisfaction of all guests is his primary concern. When we wanted to know more about hikes and trails, he gave us insights that only a professional mountaineer could, and made perfect recommendations for me and my son. The area itself is spectacular, and I don’t use that term lightly. The hotel is within a beautiful area of the Alps, which is highly accessible and stunningly beautiful. Nature abounds, and you have the choice of keeping to established paths, or rambling around the mountains, amongst the wildlife. I would highly recommend this part of France to nature lovers, and I would not hesitate to return to this hotel, and indeed intend to return for another holiday.
