We are not terribly picky when it comes to vacations, and we have been in many vacation resorts around Mexico over the years, but how Playa Mazatlan received a 4+ star rating has my head spinning. There are LOUD bands that play all frigging day long along the beach .... and they seem to love to play over one another .... horrible. 98% of clientele was families from Mexico - loud and rude. Only nice pool was overrun with kids and their rude parents. The smaller pool (nice one shown in the pictures) doesn't offer any type of seating. Booze selection for all-inclusive was bottom of the barrel (thank goodness for stores on the little road outside the resort where you could by a Modelo for cheap). Buffet was disgusting - lightly warm food at best and the same stuff ALL THE TIME .... no toaster in the morning, bread rolls were always stale, service was nothing to write home about, people behind the counters could not speak English, no cappuccino machine (except in the evening up behind the pool - but that was broken for the 9/10 days we were there). Rooms are old and dated and the pillows are terrible. Pro - was always able to have a hot shower after running the hot water for a bit. There was literally one area on the entire resort that was 'relatively' quiet, and that was over on one remote side that had a kids area, hot tub and cold pool, which was dirty all the time because of the tree droppings. At least you could read your book though, because once noon hit and those frigging non-stop loud bands started up (complete with trombone, trumpets, clarinets, bass drum and TUBA), there was no quiet place. There isn't really anything good I can put in this review other than hot water for showers. Very disappointing holiday - even had me looking for our last 3 nights elsewhere!!

This place is OK. Somethings are great others not so much. Playa is a smaller hotel with a less corporate feel. The staff are super friendly, it is clean, the beds are comfortable. The ocean and beach are beautiful. There are lots of things to do and see within walking distance. However, it is dated.. very dated. The bathrooms need serious upgrades, there is no mini fridge to keep your water cold. The buffet is blah, same food every day, the Al a Carte restaurants have you in and out so quickly it’s not an experience, and you have to call to book in every day. You need to figure out the schedule too, as they are not all open every day. The beach sellers are relentless and the bands are fun to listen to at first but after 6 hours they become a s little much. There is zero night time entertainment. The beach chairs are solid plastic and become very uncomfortable. There is one heated pool at the main entrance, the others are freezing and the hot tubs are barely warm. If you want a small, local feel Hotel in the heart of the Golden Zone and intend to be out and about this place is for you. If you want the full all inclusive experience book somewhere else.

Omg how can this place get good reviews!! So much to unpack. Terrible big bands start at noon till dark everyday. They play feet from each other so loud loud loud all day everyday. No adult pool kids screaming at all 3 pools not to mention pee pools. There are no beach chairs just terrible plastic chairs so you cannot tan your back - bonkers !! Do even consider eating at the buffet food is cold and nasty. I ate taco chips and cheese every day ughhh. Seafood lunch gross. Ala cartes are good but you have phone everyday to book reservations. The pool deck is dangerous extremely slippery. Very dated the rooms are ok but they don’t even have do not disturb signs. The towels are hard and crusty and you can have a warm shower but Def not hot. No bathtubs. The one nice thing is that you can step out of hotel and find lots of good restaurants and bars and tons of live bands. I have been to over 30 all inclusive resorts and this one I’m afraid is at the very bottom of the list! Very disappointing because I book based on the reviews and they are very very wrong. I’m not sure who is giving the good reviews because I just cannot. I was uncomfortable for most of the trip.

This hotel is definitely not a 4.5 * resort. Required a room switch as the smell in first room was horrific. New room was better but had no dresser so lived out of suitcases for 10 days. Food was below par and cold. Complained to Westjet rep and nothing changed. We booked this resort based on previous reviews and in part because of the pool bar. Staff stated that it was cold because “it is too cold for the Mexicans.” Obviously they have no regard for tourists.

My rating is 10 for customer service but 1 for beach experience because of the constant 1-5 mariachi bands playing on the beach continually from 11 AM to 7 PM nonstop. Had the same problem last year. Here right now on day 2 of two weeks and already severely annoyed. Making plans for next year. And Hotel Playa will definitely not be on the list for 2025 winter vacation!

The Good: The history and architecture of this hotel, built in 1955, added on to and renovated, they have maintained the quaintness of a Mexican villa. The rooms are very comfortable, as are the beds and pillows. The showers are great, lots of pressure and hot water. Our room was well maintained and equipped by the cleaning staff daily. A fridge might have been nice but there was always lots of water left for us. The staff at the Playa are some of the best we’ve EVER had! The restaurant and bar staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. They are truly the best part of the Playa Mazatlan. The food would be a close second. There are three al a carte restaurants, we tried them all a couple of times and were never disappointed. The buffet always had enough choices but it wasn’t always hot, not a big deal. Public washrooms are plentiful throughout the Playa, they are well marked, well maintained and always clean, not always the case at other resorts, very impressive. The Bad: NOISE! If you like being in the centre of things, this place is for you! The noise never stops, NO EXAGGERATION! I read the reviews and didn’t get it, now I do! The design of the resort, along with all the hard surfaces, combined with lots of small children, sounds echo and reverberate and are amplified. There are no quiet places at this resort. What this resort is lacking is designated quiet adult only areas, a quiet lobby bar for an evening cocktail or quiet afternoon visit. There are 2 smallish hot tubs for adults only but they were generally packed, sometimes even with children. There was a large pool with a swim up bar (not open) that maybe was to be for adults but it wasn’t heated so no one was ever in it. I really think this resort is designed with families with children in mind, not adults. Birds at the buffet restaurants was another complaint I saw on reviews, yes, it’s a problem. They don’t really get to the buffet tables but they sure are a pest while dining. A modest effort had been made to keep them out with thin screen but that is ripped, torn and might as well be taken down. I’m sure there is something that could keep the birds out but maintain the beautiful view and the fresh air. The Ugly: None of this is about the Playa Hotel, just the timing of our visit and beach experience. First, bands on the beach! They start around 12 and go till around 5:30. A first you think, what a quaint Mexican experience, and then another band shows up, and then another, all playing at the same time! It’s like a competition to see who can play the loudest! There is no where to escape from the noise! CARNAVAL, sorry not for me. Carnaval runs for 6 days 6 weeks before Easter and the city goes crazy. Parades, fireworks, bus loads of people coming from other parts of Mexico, noise, Noise, NOISE! Noise all night long, for 6 days or more. Maybe staying in the Gold Zone is not the place for people looking for a quiet vacation, like me. If you are like me, and are looking for a peaceful beach vacation, look in a different area.

I really wanted to like this hotel. The staff here are amazing, the food in the buffets had a good variety of Mexican and great attempts at non-Mexican food. The hotel is spotless, there is always someone cleaning and picking things up. What brought it down is the time of year and management's insistence that all was normal. Negatives include the temperature of the food in the buffet, it's not always hot. It can be a turn off to get a plate of fantastic looking pork in green sauce only to find the plate is warmer than the food. The taste was good but not the temperature. The snack bars are also a bit hit and miss. Cold French fries are great in University after a night out but not here. The ceviche is bland and flavorless unless you doctor it up with sauces you have to ask for. I know they can do better! The sushi was surprisingly good. The bars always have a good selection but, I just don't understand the rules around beer. In the buffet and in the beach bars you get Tecate light and Indio. Both are good but, if you go to the "A La Carte" restaurants, you can't get either. On Italian night you get Pacifico, at Captain Jack's you get Tecate and Corona and if you go to Casa Roberto you can only get Tecate and XX. Let's be consistent, please! If I wanted a Pacifico while sitting on the beach, I was told I had to pay extra for it ?!?! The noise on the beach was the final straw. A dB meter on my phone registered an average over an hour of 87 dB considered dangerous. I understand the hotel can do nothing about the bands playing on the public beach, but then please provide somewhere the guests can get away from the noise. Reception sent me to the Sunset 550 bar but, it had been closed for over a year and the elevator she insisted I take had been under construction for 6 weeks! Even the sports bar has the TV turned up to a steady 77 dB and when asked to turn it down, they explained that the rules said they have to have it up. The day trippers drinking, singing, dancing were not a problem, it was the unbelievable volume of the "Bands" and the fact that they had two or three playing different songs in close proximity trying to out volume each other! Will I go back to Mazatlan? Very likely. Back to the Playa Mazatlan? Unlikely.
