Somewhat walkable
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
This resort is large and well maintained, especially the pool areas which were cleaned throughout the day, everyday. However, our room was the only exception to this which had a strong musty damp smell which only got worse through the week. The shower ceiling was covered in mould and damp patches in the bedroom walls and ceiling. The sea view was gorgeous and as we were only there for a week we didn’t want to move rooms and pack/unpack although I’m sure they would have accommodated if we had asked.
The three pools are a nice size and we never struggled to get a sunbed. Drinks service around the pool and beach was a nice touch. The beach was stunning with powder soft sand and clear water, this was one out our favourite things about the hotel.
Food was ok, quality was hit or miss but to be expected in a chain hotel. Really liked not having to reserve restaurants - we went about 6:30/7pm most evenings and always got a seat straight away.
Location of hotel is great just a short walk from bars/clubs/restaurants and the $1 bus gets you further down the strip to the La Isla mall.

Absolutely fantastic all inclusive adults only hotel.
My partner and I spent 12 days here in May 2023 and can't rate it highly enough. We were told the rainy season was about to start but we only had one night when there was any rain, and there was plenty within the hotel to keep you busy when it did rain.
General hotel The hotel was absolutely spotless, it was constantly being cleaned and was well maintained. The staff are fantastic, really attentive and you can tell they take pride in what they do. The Lobby is beautiful, and all the different areas are superb. We were all inclusive and I was amazed at what was included as there's usually hidden extra charges - everything I mention below was included.
Food/ drinks There are 5 restaurants to choose from, and they're all brilliant. You don't need to reserve at the a la cart restaurants, and if it's busy you get a buzzer and can wait in the art deco bar in the lobby. In order of my preference I'd recommend 1) the Japanese restaurant - amazing sushi and ramen, 2) the buffet - so much choice and always delicious 3) the Italian - the dinner menu was great and you can also get lunch in here too 4) the fusion restaurant - some interesting combos and finally 5) the steak restaurant - surf and turf option but there's better places to eat in my opinion.
There's also a 25 hour snack bar which always had fresh guac and salsa for nachos, as well as quesadillas, burrito, hot dogs and pizza. There were fridges of bottled water, optics and a coffee machine in there too. There was only one day we were there that they seemed to run out of water in the snack bar but the rest of the time it was always being restocked with fresh food and water.
Coffee bar There's a hot drink and cake bar in the lobby and which was open until late. You can get various hot and hold drinks as well as a lovely selection of cakes and ice cream. I had earl grey tea and my partner had the lattes - always great!
Bars There were several bars to choose from, but generally you'd get table (sun lounger) service, even on the beach! There were premium drinks like Bacardi and lovely cocktails. I highly recommend margarita on the rocks. The staff were lovely and really looked after you, anticipating when you needed a top up.
I can't fault the service we received, always friendly and welcoming in the restaurants and the bars. They even helped the folks who couldn't handle their drinks by piling them into wheelchairs and taking them back to their rooms (something I've never seen before, and found quite shocking). Thankfully that wasn't a regular occurrence that I saw, and not the sort of behaviour I'd expect from people choosing to stay in this lovely hotel.
Pools There were three pools which were all well maintained. The first pool which you come across as you exit the lobby is stunning, particularly at night when it's lit up and you look across it to the ocean. This one got the sun in the morning/ early afternoon and the sun loungers always seemed to be reserved.
The quiet pool to the left and behind the theatre was great, quite small but plenty of cabanas and loungers to choose from, with beautiful views out to the sea.
The party pool to the right, which had music and the animation team. It isn't my cup of tea but looked like a lot of fun if you were up for getting involved, or joining the foam party. There were two bars at that pool, one of them a swimup. The music, although loud, wasn't disruptive and I quite enjoyed sitting a little further away but getting to hear the tunes.
Beach access There's also a private stretch of beach with plenty of loungers and parasols, we never struggled to find a lounger. The sea is gorgeous and the staff again work hard to keep it clean and make sure your drink is topped up. There's life guards if you're swimming and you're still close enough to the hotel if you need to nip in for anything.
You're given cards when you check in which you can exchange for pool towels, and I'd recommend taking a thermos cup/ chili bottle to keep your drinks cold!
Rooms The room we had (555) was exactly as pictured on trip advisor. We had a great view out the side of th hotel so we could see the ocean and the bay, and got the most stunning sunsets. I'd recommend that floor and I think it was rooms 550-560 that had that view. The rooms were kept immaculate, cleaned daily and you got to choose of they changed the sheets/ towels. There were a couple of days when the bottled water wasn't replenished but as I mentioned the snack bar always had plenty. The fridge always had pepsi, pepsi light, 7up and tonic water and the optics were refilled with Jose cuervo, Smirnoff, Bacardi and Gordon's gin! Perfect for chilling with a drink on the balcony as the sun set before dinner. Housekeeping left us cute towel arrangements on the bed which I loved, a really nice touch.
Entertainment There was always something happening, from morning yoga stretching to volleyball, to quizzes to live music at night. We'd heard everything stopped quite early but didn't find that to be the case. Things were going on until about 11pm and then you could head to the sister hotel next door to use their nightclub if you wanted to keep going!
Tips I found a good article on Skyscanner about how much to tip in Cancun (if this isn't something you're used to). We took pesos with us and tipped the bar and wait staff regularly. Usually 20 or 50 pesos depending on whether it was sun lounger service or going up to the bar ourselves. At dinner it was usually 50. It definitely wasn't expected as no one hung about waiting for a tip, but it felt like the right thing to do seen as we were so well taken care of. We tipped housekeeping 50 a day again as they always left our room looking lovely.

Response from RIU Hotels and Resorts, Owner at Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas
I had a great time at Palace Las Americas this year over Christmas. The grounds are beautiful and very clean (except for the droplets of what looked like blood between my room and the elevator?) Rooms were very comfortable, but are showing their age a bit. Mini bar was nice, the liquor dispenser was something I've never seen before, but it contained zero food snacks.
The beach is the best for swimming I've ever seen in Cancun. Clear water, great waves, no jellyfish, very minimal seaweed that is meticulously groomed by the staff every morning. The only drag about the beach, and a lot of the pool spots, is that due to the way the hotel is situated, you start to lose the sun as early as 11:30am (at least at this time of year.) The shadow of the hotel cuts out a lot of sun opportunity. There was one area around the main pool that seemed to get sun all day long.
Staff was all great and friendly and helpful. I appreciated that Palace Las Americas didn't subject me to any sort of time-share sales pitch.
All in all, a great time and I would definitely consider visiting again.

Don’t waste your time or money. Once you’ve arrived they have your money and don’t care at all for the guests. Room temperature is set to 20.5c (68f) and you can’t change it or turn it off. If you like it cold in the small room at all times this is your place. Don’t try the margaritas they consist of tequila and lemon (not lime) ice. They do not use any sweetener or orange liqueur and it is terrible. No homemade or authentic tortilla chips they serve round bagged tortilla chips no salsa to be found just pico de gallo sometimes and stadium cheese (yuck). They offer beer wine and mixed drinks (libre, vodka tonic, soda). Only time you can get fresh juice is breakfast and it goes fast so be early (no later than 8) breakfast is only available till 10 and after 8 nothing is hot or fresh. Buffet and dinner restaurants serve lukewarm food at all stations if it’s supposed to be hot or cold it will be lukewarm. Restaurants only offer beer wine and soda, no mixed drinks in restaurants Ihaven’t seen anyone with frozen drinks except the mysterious mudslide one person had, tried to order one myself and was told they don’t have it so I have no idea who to tip to get one. Toilet takes 3 flushes for success so there’s some environmental practices that are strange. Tried talking to supervisor as I am currently on property and was “victim shammed” everything was my fault I should have ordered a simple mixed drink, the ac must run this cold to maintain the property. No apology No attempt to make it better. Employees will only help if you tip them unfortunately if you don’t pre-tip you don’t get service. Gratuity is earned and 2 employees have received gratitude from me coffee counter and 24hour food room employees are great everyone else lacks customer service and empathy. THAT SMELL in lobby is NO JOKE, just overpowering terrible and stuck in my throat making the bad food flavor even worse than it iis already. The food really is bad. I don’t think cruise ship food is good but this place makes it seem not so bad after all. This is a 2 star resort esp quality of service and that’s generous. The property is aged and worn out but that shouldn’t really be the issue if service exists. Supervisor should be fired for telling a guest it’s their fault the resort is a run down mess with no customer service skills. Concierge experience was no better. Go next door to the 3 star hotel if you want service - it does not exist at Riu Palace Las Americas. The most unique resort chain in Mexico no tortilla chips no salsa no margaritas iceberg cold rooms.

I have mixed feeling about this resort. The first two paragraphs explain situations, and I've included a list of pros and cons.
Upon check in, we noticed the room was extremely humid and very uncomfortable. Couldn't figure out how to work thermostat; tried to lower temp but it did not change. Mentioned that at the front desk but was told "23" was the correct temperature. The very next day, due to the humidity in the room and very slick tile floors, I slipped and fell between the fridge, closet, bathroom door & entrance door. Bruised my knee and hip BAD, complete with a knot on my head. Again mentioned humidity in the room but this time told them I fell and injured myself, and was told "they'd look into it."
Despite me not complaining about the TV in the room (I hadn't even turned it on), two resort employees came to the door to check it. No clue why - due to the language barrier they were unable to tell me why they were there.
Pros: Housekeeping came in daily and replenished bottled water, towels, toilet tissue and made beds. Check in was very smooth and the front desk attendants easily accommodated adding a 2nd person to my room for a few nights. Bartenders, servers and entertainers were very friendly, welcoming, attentive and professional. Housekeepers are always making sure that the tile floor in the lobby, hallways and any common areas were dry and free of sand and debris. Close to shopping areas and ability to visit other Riu properties.
Cons: Tile flooring is extremely slick when wet or damp. With the addition of soap, the tile flooring in the shower was extremely dangerous to say the very least. The shower head is loose; only the hand sprayer is able to be turned on as it looks like the shower head is coming off the wall. Bars are only open until midnight despite this being an "adults only" resort. Coffee packets (while appreciated) only include 1 creamer packet. Food is at best "okay" - meaning not exciting or anything that one would think a resort would offer. Room is extremely humid no matter what - papers I had were curled due to the humidity in the room.

Response from Online Reputation Manager, Owner at Hotel Riu Palace Las Americas
This is our second trip to Riu Palace Las Americas and honestly I see myself going here again and again. I don't even know where to begin with this resort because there are so many things I love about it. I think most importantly the friendliness of the staff and also the hygiene needs to be stated first. They are constantly cleaning... constantly!! The entire resort just seems spotless at all times and I absolutely love that. The food both at the buffet and the restaurants is great, the activites during the day keep you well entertained, and I love that the RIU parties are off premises. This way, the resort is never TOO loud in case you want to just relax, but getting to the parties is also super easy as there is a free shuttle like every 10 minutes. The beach is one of my favorite parts too because the sand is beautiful, and i've been to many resorts in the past where it is just constantly too wavy to enter the water. This beach is rarely that wavy, so you can always enter when you like and there is little to no sea weed at all. Honestly, I can go on and on about this resort but to sum it up, I would just like to say that there is absolutely no way you can go wrong with this resort. I can guarantee that everyone will love their stay here. The biggest problem with this resort, is that when you are leaving, you are extremely sad!

We spent two weeks here from the 21st October to the 4th November. Our 6th floor Junior suite with balcony had an ocean view.
The room was equipped with a safe, television, iron, ironing board, tea and coffee making facilities. These was a small Minibar as well as a cabinet which contained four bottles of spirits on optic.
The bathroom was a bit dated, there was a large chip in handbasin, the chrome on the taps had worn away. Additionally the seal on the shower door was ill fitting and water created large puddles on floor. Our accommodation was cleaned every day.
The towel art creations that were left in our room were really rather good.
The main restaurants were Don Roberto and El Romero (reviewed separately). We had a few niggles about the food, but overall the food served here was variety and good quality.
There were a number of themed restaurants, we visited the Italian Los Arcos, the Steakhouse Black and White (reviewed separately). A reservation was required for these resturants and those we did not visit, the Mexican Fiesta Mexicana, Japanese Sakura and the Gourmet Krystal.
We were frequent visitors to Capuchino, the coffee bar, located on the ground floor in the vast lobby (reviewed separately).
There were a number of bars, reviewed separately, which were Bar Art Deco, Bar Terraza - entertainment area and Pool Bars Can and Cun. There was also Bar 24, snacks were also available here.
Four themed parties, white, pink, jungle and neon were held at the sister hold Riu Caribe, down the road. There is a free shuttle service provide to and from hotels.
There were a plethora of local buses, which ran very frequently, to transport guests to downtown Cancun or to the Isla CancĂşn shopping. The fare was 12 Pesos (roughly 50 pence) for each journey, they ran twenty-four hours.
There were sunbeds around the pools, with some shaded areas and towels were provided. Sunbeds were also on the beach, Playa Riu Palace Los Americas (reviewed separately).
During our stay at the Hotel we experienced the celebration of the Day of the Dead, DĂa de los Muerto combined with Halloween, what an experience. The staff joined with costumes and colourful makeup
The fruit and vegetable carvings, the decorations and the themed cakes and cookies in the dining room were very special.
There was even a Shrine/Altar erected in The Lobby dedicated to the departed family members of the Staff. A colourful touching tribute.
We did have a few issues with the food, especially in the themed restaurants, but overall was a most enjoyable holiday.

Would i go to this hotel again? No. Not because of anything wrong just feel like we had done all there was to do by day 10 and last 4 days was just a bit routine.
Reception team - could not fault them, did have a few issues which they resolved quickly
Food - excellent quality only improvement suggestion would be to increase or vary menus a little. The Italian was our favourite and food and staff in there Amazing
Rooms - just ok, tired and could do with a bit of a face lift if I am honest
Bar staff - those guys do not stop, they are so helpful and attentive, best I have had in many years.
Entertainment - just ok - an enthusiastic team but as amateur as it comes. The team effort is there but if Entertainment is important to you give this one a miss. Have been to many Rui hotels over the years and all the focus here seems to be geared towards getting people to go to the 'parties' that take place at rui caribe hotel. Was not for us. Did speak to quite a few younger folk and don't think they are really for them either. Seen a few young ones all hyped up for the party and then they were back in bar in our hotel by 1100 Think Rui need to have a re think here.
So in summary if you want a good location, with good food and drink and are not bothered that rooms are a bit tired, and Entertainment is a bit naff then get it booked.
And finally Sunbeds - there are 100s of them but only actually a few that get the sun for a decent length of time in winter months. The beds in the Sunny areas had all been reserved with towels by 0800, in general had to either get a bed that only had Sun between 1000 and 1430 or move from one to another throughout the day. I did witness staff putting towels onto beds that I can only assume they then passed on to folk who had tipped them well.

We stayed Feb 20th- Feb 26th. We found this to be a wonderful, clean resort. Great service at front desk upon arrival, room just as described. For a resort of this size, and it being "Adult only", it definitely needs more than 1 swim up bar. It is lacking in public restrooms for the pool/ beach area, it should have stand alone washrooms outside like other riu resorts. If a remodel happens, it would be very helpful to add a "Pepe's" outdoor food/ grill station for during day, for easy quick/ grab and go food options, instead of having to dry off and go into buffet. We would return again.

I recently stayed at this hotel (December 2024). Welcome to the top by warm and friendly staff. The swimming pools are ideal for relaxing and/or enjoying the various activities on offer. The beach is spotless, well maintained by the staff, with fine sand and crystal clear waters. The location is perfect, close to all attractions but far enough away to enjoy a peaceful environment. And icing on the cake: hotel without children, no heckling, just the sound of the waves! A real happiness, I highly recommend!

I don’t recall seeing ANY TV’s anywhere in public spaces at this resort. And there really isn’t a Sports Bar at this Riu either, there is a large bar off of the lobby and MAYBE they have a TV behind the bar…? But it is definitely not a Sports Bar.

There was photographers when I was there, it seemed their speciality was having ladies in long flowing gowns having pictures taken with a camera and drones, I can't see why they would not be able to do a similar thing with a couple, they advertise by the towel collection point near the pool next to the guided tour reps.
There are more places to choose from in the Cancun area.
