I knew from the reviews that the hotel was old but finding a bulky buttons telephone was quite shoclin, lol. Being serious this hotel is outdated, the service is really midiocre. We wanted information on a tour and they asked us to actually come down to the front desk to give us info. Other low light is that I asked...

great location -- and only 2 blocks from the main square & historical district. Originally it was a house with a lovely court yard. Everything is tastefully done . The hotel has a rather surprising largish pool. The rooms were exactly the way the picture showed on Expedia.. The room wa very spacious & very clean. the only negative thing...

We stayed here twice in one week during our house hunting. Beautiful colonial hotel near the center of Merida. Close to parks and restaurants. 20 minute ride from the airport. If you rent a car, but a GPS with Mexico maps. Hotel offers two types of rooms, standard and deluxe. The only difference appears to be a king size bed...

We loved this hotel. It is small, in a great location, the staff are so friendly, the bed was comfortable, and it has a stylish jungle courtyard. There are some really amazing restaurants very close by and a couple discotecas. The room was clean and had some neat little extras like robes, slippers, and even a little sewing kit. We...

Located close to the city center there is a parking lot located behind the hotel to the right shortly after you drive past the hotel. Reception was friendly and efficient and the room quite large and spotlessly clean. We were located on the top floor so the room didnt suffer from any noise. The hotel has a pool which looked...

We love visiting Mexico throughout and always take our kids on these trips. This hotel worked very well for us, because it was in a great location, beautiful setting and a great pool. The service was great overall and very helpful in selecting different tours. My only negative comment would be the food quality for breakfast. I consider Mexican breakfasts...

We stayed here for one night during our tour of Mexico. Location (as others have said) is excellent, town center close to everything. Hotel is old and has some charm. We had a room high on the top floor which gave us a view over the city and very little noise. Its a bit strange getting out of the lift...

This hotel is located DIRECTLY! smack down in the Center of Merida(two blocks away). The best room we had so far was the suite (second largest room they have). The bell boys are usually the nicest of all the crew. There is a bar on the first floor and no ice machine, however if you do need ice do not...

Easy walk to Centro, clean room that has been updated. There is a nice dresser, and new tile in the bathroom. Nothing fancy. We saw beautiful sunsets from our room on the top floor. The morning light shines through the curtains so this is great for early risers! We didn't get the greatest room location, in a far dark corner...

We loved the old Spanish charm of the hotel and it's location, just 2 and 1/2 blocks from the main square. The walk to the square passes two parks, a beautiful church, a great stopping place for a margherita or other refreshing drink, and some shops. The hotel courtyard is lovely. The restaurant was very nice and there are a...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
