We traveled to Merida while driving around the Yucatan in January. We chose to stay at this hotel and it was amazing. The location is probably the best in the city center and just a few blocks to everything you would want to visit while there. We stayed in a large suite to the front of the historic building which...

The Casa Del Balam Hotel is well-situated in the area near the main square. There is a nice pool area that is mostly shady, with pretty landscaping, deck chairs and small tables. We almost always had the pool to ourselves. The courtyard inside the lobby is beautiful and filled with tropical plants and a fountain. Some people had their breakfasts...

Really nicely presented hotel within a short walk of the old city centre. You enter into a lovely inner courtyard and we were greeted by the bellboy who took our car keys and parked up for us in a secure compound adjacent the hotel. The parking doesn't actually belong to the hotel but is included in your booking and is...

Was in town for a wedding and stayed here for 5 nights. The hotel is very centrally located. The rooms are pretty basic but clean and have everything you need. Be sure to have breakfast at the hotel, you won't regret it! The hotel is also a great price!

Excellent place to stay! The location is great! The room was spacious and great, starting with the huge cozy bed, all the required things in the bathroom, bathrobes and slippers, free water, tea and coffee etc. Very stylish and nicely decorated, the room was also fully isolated from the rest of the hotel and had a separate entrance/staircase. They also...

Imagine a rustic old house, open central courtyard for breakfast and welcoming smiles from all the staff. The Rooms continue the theme with an older style but spacious and comfortable. Even things like the wooden doors on the lifts have their charm. I found that the staff were incredibly helpful with anything I asked and my stay was relaxing. Location...

This is a stunning Hotel. The staff so friendly and really go out of their way to make your stay rememberable. We had a Mastersuite overlooking the pool with a mega balcony and outdoor sitting area. If you don't like old furniture and only modern puristic style this is not your hotel. The magic is in the furniture of a...

Just 2 1/2 blocks from the main square and within easy walking distance of most major attractions Casa del Balam offers very comfortable and clean accommodations built around a classic "Old Mexico" courtyard. Great staff (Mariana, Carlos), helpful with suggestions and transportation/guide arrangements at competitive rates to the outlying Mayan sites. Breakfasts served from corner Bistro could be better. Would...

This is a really lovely old hotel with some unique features such as the small lift and beautiful architecture with the railings. You can stand on any floor in the middle and look down at the courtyard and look up at the other levels. The rooms are nicely sized with very comfy beds and it is peaceful at night despite...

We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Casa Del Balam. The location is convenient to the Plaza Grande. The staff were helpful, the rooms comfortable and the pool area is lovely. It is very clean, beds were comfortable, the bathrooms nice and the AC worked well. It is located on Calle 60 so you do get some road noise. There...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
