Very nice hosts but the hotel needs a thorough scrub down. Very cheeky to charge the $$$ when the hotel is really not up and running and very poorly maintained. Pool was green and disgusting. Our floating room had an amazing view but don’t look too closely at the piles of dirt, raggedy curtains, ancient shower with cracks and no soap holder. Felt like poor to average clamping. Was almost worth it for the great views, esp sundown. The place has tons of potential, but we honestly were very relieved to leave!
We rented a floating room with a terrace on the Mekong, which could have been simply sumptuous. The problem is that the owner takes no care of his establishment and is content to maximise his current monopoly position on the island. Indeed, the hotel is the only establishment currently (July 2022) open for the whole of Khone Island and Det Island (the 2 islands communicate via the French Bridge) and also has the only restaurant open on both islands. The bathroom is not clean (like the rest of the hotel), one bed smells of urine and the springs of the other one are coming out, the arrival to the room by a small bridge is simply littered with plastic bottles that the owner does not even bother to fish out. The service in the restaurant is very slow (45 minutes waiting time for each of the 3 meals we had there per day as there is no other restaurant open on the two islands), the portions served are very small and some dishes are downright bad, the best ones not exceeding the "ordinary" note. The restaurant is lit with white neon lights, the tablecloths are dirty, and the owner just shakes the dirt on the floor. For a so-called sunset inter-island tour (the pilot told us at 17.30 that the sun was hidden behind clouds, while sunset was at 18.30 and the inter-island ride was limited to a standard super slow crossing to the port from where we had left to reach the hotel on the day of our arrival) he charged us 360000 Laks, which is exorbitant. The bikes he rents have no brakes, no bell and have badly inflated tyres. I'll stop the list of my complaints here, but for every other service, we got a terrible price-quality ratio. We are all the more sorry to give this opinion as the place could be superb with a minimum of involvement from the owner, as well as respect for his customers.…
Together with 25 other Anglo-Thai Society members, my wife and myself spent last night at the Sala Done Khone Hotel. We were allocated one of the Garden Villa-style rooms which was spacious with a large bed and nice shutters fitted with mesh - important as there are a few mosquitos around (pleased to see that a coil was lit up on our balcony. The bathroom was fine as was the shower for which there was no shortage of hot water. On the F & B front, both Breakfast (which the Manager kindly agreed for us to have at 0630 hours rather than wait until the usual 0700 hours start) and the Group Dinner were at the a Restaurant overlooking the Mekong River. The quality of food and service for both meals was very good. All in all - and despite the early morning call from the resident cockerel - we much enjoyed our stay and would gladly recommend the property to others.…
Upon much anticipated arrival we were faced with the fact that one of our two rooms booked was not registered, meaning one part of our group had to sleep off the property for one night. The other room in the French Colonial Building was all but inviting and after insisting were we able to move to room 7 which had a terrace to the back garden and provided for some much appreciated light. Room itself has a good size, one must not mind all the spider webs and Gekos on the walls. An early waking up is ensured 😨 by the Roosters and Chicken which abundantly possess the gardens from all sides. Food and service in the restaurant is so-so, at breakfast overcrowded with very limited choice if you still can find something... pool off the property in poor location with view blocked by the floating bungalows below. There would actually be a quite nice Hotel with a good restaurant just beyond the French Bridge (see last photo) of which we were not aware off at time of booking.…
Everything is just perfect, the two managers are absolutely great, professional, friendly, insightful and helpful. The room we had was really nice and spacious, a heritage suite, with nice views on the garden and the river further. Good breakfast and dinner and the best spot for sunset!
So i start with my review with mixed feelings...first i start with saying that i miss my sour pickles in belgium a lot but i think that on don khone the tourists staff and locals ate to mutch of them.. i think that the tourisme over here comes from big resorts in thailand and come one week to done khone to visit laos🙄 standards in laos are not the same in thailand! If you visit don det you have the same problem ...no lao smile, wannebe hippies and the rude partypeople that just party and try to be tough)...so i think the floating studio is a silent peacefull place to be...we loved are balcony and amazing view...we know that not everything is perfect but at home my furniture is not perfect either...i think the price is overpriced (we payed 70 but better is 50 dollars or use the 20 dollars to have nice decoration) because of that (but hey i can survive bad furniture)...the most annoying is that most of the staff dont smile... but i wouldnt smile eather if i would work 15 houres a day ...the same people in the morning afternoon and evening...and i suppose there are underpayed...the managers smile thats something right? And they undestand everything we say (unfortenately for them sometimes)...breakfast was ok but not more than that but i loved the melonjuice!...again without a smile... we had dinner one night (gin tonics are good served...so if you want to have value for your money😉) but it was even not enough for a child.. we took chicken bbq (4 brochette)but i think they meant 4 little mini peaces of chicken with 5 belgium fries... (fyi my weight is 53 kilo so it s not that i m a foodmonster).. they said it was with salad but it was for them the 5 tomatos and 5 onions on the brochette(my husband cried almost)...but the taste was ok...overall we had a nice stay because wa made it good in our little floating studio (take this hippies😉)...it was ok but overpriced is my conclusion (and the smiles is a work of both sides )…
This hotel is a gem on the island. If you need pristine luxury, this is not the island for you. However, if you want a scenic adventure with good location, adequate accommodations, good food and EXCELLENT support staff, this hotel is a fine choice. The lodging has all that you need but has a feel of the past. Good mosquito netting and air conditioning. Lovely French heritage building. Beautiful nature. Enchanting sunset. Fantastic waterfall. Good WIFI. The management staff answered email in English promptly and completely and the level of spoken English was high.
We asked around and this 3* hotel seems to be the best on the island. Airco, bathroom, services, wifi, breakfast, all are worth 3* in Europe. Obviously the view over the Mekong is fantastic. The manager worked on Australia, so his English is perfect. Please enjoy also the sunset and tranquility... 😊 You arrive with a boat on the island. Be sure you are not packed with 30 kg each, as you will have to carry it (for 20m)
We had this “hotel” included in our package which I think had been sourced by a local agent so it wasn’t a location we had specifically chosen ourselves. Had we done so, I would not have chosen it. Overall the entire place needs an overhaul to bring it up to standard as it’s not advertised as a backpackers resort. The beds in our floating bungalow were atrocious, every way you turned you ended up with a spring sticking in you; they need to be replaced if anyone wants to get a decent nights sleep. Similarly, the bathrooms are tired and grubby; our shower was a simple stream of water (albeit hot water which is one good thing!) and the one cold tap (no hot) on the sink failed to turn off and emitted a high pitched squeal! Breakfast was of very poor standard, personally I would go elsewhere. The manager was friendly but unfortunately he wasn’t around much when we were there so the communication with the young girls was a little hit and miss! The pool was definitely a disappointment- it looked green and uncared for with some rickety beds dotted around. All in all, not a place I could recommend.…
We reserved by booking to have good price. We were in the green resort, a big room with a big bathroom, terrace, a small pool for only 6rooms. In front of the space , crossing the road there a another pool for the all hotel. The view on the river is perfect for sunset and breakfast. A good choice.they have 3 choice of room floating, bahn in and heritage room in a colonial house.
