We stayed here for two nights during a two and a half month travelling trip as a treat over Valentines Day and it certainly did not disappoint.
We came early so we could spend the whole day in the park before check in, we got a cold towel and welcome drink on arrival along with an itinerary for our few days there along with free food bundles to give the elephants (two for each day) and vouchers for our washes, dinner and breakfast. Check in was quick and easy and they took our bags so we could enjoy the park whilst we waited for our room.
The park itself is wonderful, there’s a museum and information centre about the elephants and the park which we found really interesting and which answered many of our questions about how the park started and how they look after the elephants. The park is huge, and beautiful with great gardens and landscape. The sky walk has great views of the scenery and the elephants and we enjoyed standing there and taking in the views.
Our room was amazing, very large and spacious, good storage, complimentary robes and slippers and a fruit platter each day too. It was clean and well kept with good air con and a comfy bed. There are tea and coffee meaning facilities and a mini bar and chocolate at extra charge. There is also 24 hour room service which we indulged in! The hotel staff are great and very attentive at breakfast. And the breakfast is large and tasty with a good selection of hot, and continental options.
The park and elephant staff are amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each one of them and their elephants. You can see the relationship they each have with their elephant and it’s amazing to watch. We enjoyed the experiences offered including the elephant chauffeur and safari ride, washing and bathing with them and feeding!
Our dinner was fantastic, we had the set menu both nights which was 5 courses of very tasty food. The waiters and waitresses are lovely, friendly and very attentive.
We also went to the spa whilst we stayed and enjoyed a full body Balinese massage, the spa therapists are great at what they do and we had a brilliant and very relaxing experience with them. The view to the elephants from the spa is amazing too!
We spent a lot of our time with Fatima and her seven month old baby Arjun who we absolutely adored. His favourite food is apple so if you go and see him make sure to take some! Their keeper (we can’t remember his name sorry, he used to work with Ola) was AMAZING. He was so knowledgable and had worked there for 21 years! He’s a great asset to the working team.
We also had the absolute pleasure of meeting Nigel Mason himself, who had such time for all his guests whilst being super busy across the park helping out so thank you for your time Nigel.
Overall, we had the most amazing stay and can’t fault it at all. Thank you for a great experience and stay and we can’t wait to come back again.

Wow, wow, wow what an incredible experience we had at Mason Elephant Lodge. We booked to stay for 2 nights in a park view room, the room was stunning with views of the elephants from your balcony. Breakfast was part of the package and we added airport pick up, very efficient and evening meal, the food was stunning and the service was so attentive. We were one of only four lodges occupied , so it was beautifully peaceful. And now for the main reason to come here, the elephants, incredible. They are very well looked after and loved by their mahouts, the bonds are so strong and unbreakable. We washed and bathed 2 stunning elephants, and we, the mahouts and elephants had so much fun, this along with a safari ride and elephant chauffeur to the restaurant for evening meal is included in the package. You can buy extra bowls of fruit to feed the elephants for 50,000IDR, yes £2.80, and what an amazing experience. If you love elephants, this is for you, the owners and staff go beyond to make your stay special and the elephants for all, are the stars of the show. You will leave beaming from ear to ear. Thank you all at Mason Elephant Lodge.

We were greeted and accompanied by wonderful people and even made some friends. The hotel service exceeded our expectations.

One thing that I did not enjoy was the elephant rides. Though the lodge rescue these animals and take great care of them I would rather not do this activity. We spoke to many of the elephant keepers and we were around the elephants enough to see that they are really well taken care off.

The food!!!! we have traveled to many places and it's not always easy to find food that is truly delicious. You do not have to look to far, this is it.

Overall I would rate this as a 5star experience and we will be returning to let our family enjoy this experience with us..

Thank you Mason Elephant Lodge and staff.

Not all of the rooms have a view. The photos on the website don't show that those elephants are chained there. They are only there at the end of the day when they aren't working. The chains are quite short. There is a baby and mom in a pen but 2 men are with them and they don't let them go away from the corner of the fence where tourists can take close photos. There is a pond and shower in their enclosure but every time they move in that direction the men chase them back to the corner.
Each activity costs around $100 USD.
Rooms are clean and comfortable.
$30 USD return cab ride from Ubud.

Had an amazing experience at Masons, was a bit skeptic after reading some of the views but was pleasantly surprised. Staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming we received a free upgrade and the room was stunning and very clean. The elephant park itself was very well maintained and the elephants looked very well cared for and loved. Would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Bali thanks Masons ☺️

We stayed for 2 nights in a park room view. As animal lovers we were a little unsettled at first and weren’t sure if this felt more like a theme park rather than an elephant rescue centre. The elephants are rescued from Sumatran camps so undoubtedly they are living a happier life here, and the elephants do look very well cared for and appear to be treated respectfully. They do look happy and we never saw any signs of distress. The sad fact is that these elephants would be long dead if they were left in the camps or even in the wild, due to poachers and deforestation. At first we felt things like the riding and chaining up were unethical but the information at the park explains that the riding is beneficial for bone mineral density and strength, as they get less exercise here than in the wild. The chaining at night time and meal times is so they don’t wreck the place and fight one another. The chains don’t look too restrictive or uncomfortable.
The pool could be better, it’s small but adequate. You would expect an expensive hotel to have a better pool. Here you are paying for the elephant experience rather than fancy rooms and grounds.
The rooms were comfortable, nothing extraordinary.
We didn’t pay for any extra elephant activities as they were quite expensive, make sure you know what is included in your stay and likely you will need to pay extra for washing and bathing of the elephants etc.
The food was pretty good and a reasonable price.
A few hours at the park is enough, so my feeling is that unless you stay in a park view room you may as well come for a day trip. We enjoyed watching the elephants in the evenings and mornings from our balcony but unless you have this view don’t bother staying.

I’m not going to go into the ethics of this place. Although the park is not the perfect environment for elephants it is also a million times better from where they came from. That’s how we viewed it which is why we paid them a visit.

With regards to the park once you’ve decided to go; driver pick up was prompt but a long drive from our hotel in Jimbaran (2hours). Once we checked in we were greeted politely by happy staff and told they would call us for activities in the feeding area.

In general we enjoyed the day but we did find it badly organised and a bit of a free for all. Staff randomly shouting out names with no clear plan or structure to the day. Although I would point out the staff did ensure we did all our planned activities.

The elephants in general all seemed ok, I didn’t see any unhealthy elephants or any miss treatment. Other reviews mention sticks etc that trainers have we didn’t see this at all. The elephants were chained when on their pads - sleeping eating or a rest day. The museum states this is a government requirement not something they wish to do. Only one elephant seemed to be swaying as other reviews have said. The trainer explained she has done it since the camps in Sumatra where she was rescued.

The trainers love their elephants there is no doubt about that, the guys we spoke to have been with their own elephant for over 15 years and they seem to have a silent communication between the two of them.

There is free food to feed elephants but unsurprisingly they prefer the food you pay 50k/basket for.

In an ideal world I would like them to move away from the bathing and rides and focus more on the feeding and washing, perhaps even mucking out. Something more around “keeper for the day” rather than the perfect photos. But sadly they don’t get government funding and tourists are more likely to pay for the perfect photo than anything else.

Food in the restaurant was good and showers/toilets etc clean.

We found the other areas of the park closed; nursery, art gallery, theatre, senic etc. so the visit was just the elephants.

Trip home ruined by the taxi driver, gave a low tip due to his worrying driving (not just Bali roads we’ve been on them every day, he was just a last minute breaker and nearly hit mopeds etc.) once he saw the tip he said something to the hotel staff as we walked to the pool. He then chased us to the pool demanding more money in his tip. Given the price we had paid for the whole day this didn’t leave us feeling great about the company as a whole.

This place is not as popular as it should be. When people talk about Bali, this needs to come up. I only came across it when I purposely searched “elephants in bali”.
1. The hotel itself is very comfortable, clean rooms, nice restaurants with great cocktails, breakfast etc. so even if you don’t like elephants, it’s a great “hotel / resort”. Different and better experience than a villa to be honest
2. The elephants are a PLUS!!! You have activities where you can bathe and wash and swim with the elephants. You’re one on one with them and very CLOSE up. You can get your once in a lifetime photos with elephants (not through a fence) but sitting on / standing by/touching them. You can choose a room that lets you see elephants through your balcony. This place is magical
Also, you don’t have to lodge here, you can come in for just the elephant activities. But if lodging (which I advice- it’s great)- you get discounts for the activities.
3. Their customer service is GREAT. free welcome drinks, nice staff.

In summary, everyone going to Bali should visit this place. They take credit cards (which is a huge plus in Bali) and they can organize a ride for you to other parts of town at a very reasonable price.
PS- I wasn’t paid for this review. My visit with them wasn’t sponsored either. This is all just honest review.

The hotel pickup shuttle was great and on-time. We were one of the first to arrive. Upon arrival, and pretty much consistent with the rest of the day, it wasn't always clear where we should be going throughout the visit. Bathing the elephants was fun. We did not sign up for the package to ride the elephants, and we personally didn't feel comfortable doing that. Nonetheless, for the "swimming," we didn't realize that we are indeed standing on the elephants backs while they are submerged in the water. Animal treatment at this excursion has already raised some intense discussion on the forums; I'll simply say, I think it's a multifaceted issue, and you'd have to speak to someone who experienced it for context. Showers prior to breakfast was great. Food was good. Feeding the elephants was fun. It wasn't clear to us until later, but we were essentially just waiting around for another handful of people who were later than us (but who were going to the river rafting excursion next with us) to finish up, before they would transport us to the rafting. The lunch buffet at the rafting was tasty. The rafting was fun, lots of downhill (and uphill) walking.

We were a little unsure about visiting this elephant park after doing a safari in Africa and seeing them in the wild but after reading the reviews and doing some research on their website we decided to give it a go.

We arrived around 10am just in time for the presentation in the theatre all about the park. Now I fully understand that these elephants may not have survived where they were and that keeping them at this park will give them a longer life and the video makes you believe all these wonderful things about the park and the great things they do… but we left the theatre and felt like we couldn’t see any of the things they said in practice.

They talk about a “free roam area” and we thought great that’s exactly what they need. The free roam area was tiny, it said it had a lake inside, it’s a pond at best. I think my garden at home is bigger than that elephants free roam area..

They talked about how they had brought up the baby elephants and we were so pleased and excited to see them. We saw one young elephant which was 3 years old. Overall we only saw about 10-13 elephants, some were being washed, some were on guided walks and in the pool where they can walk around in circles and some were at the feeding station. When I asked where all the other baby elephants were they said their trainers weren’t in today so they were in another area. What other area?? When the elephants had finished their rides they were given food and tied up to their pad, they didn’t look too unhappy about this but again not much room from the 1m chain to even move around the pad.

All in all we paid £40 just for entry to the park and we had walked around It in 10 minutes. We didn’t want to do a ride and stayed around the feeding areas for most of our time. It was great to feed the elephants and they will do tricks which is great but overall I just felt like we were sold a story that didn’t quite live up to what we saw which is a shame.

Hi, with the accomodation you get breakfast, the ekephant bathe and wash, the elephant safari and the elephant my picks you up and takes you for your evening meal. The only extras we paid for was airport pick up and evening meal. As guests you also gave access to the park. It’s a great place to go.

Hi Iowrimack, thanks for writing in. Pick up for our bathe & breakfast option is usually between 6am - 7am (depending on where your hotel/villa is. You can stay at the park for as long as you'd like during the day, but most people stay for about 2 - 3 hours, and are usually back at their hotels/villas by the earlier afternoon.

Hi Sarinha, Unfortunately for awhile we had to close our park for the most part during covid and have it run on a minimum bookings system. I'm very happy to let you know that we're now open every day of the week again and without the minimum booking requirement. I'm sorry for the earlier inconvenience, and we hope to see you guys soon :)
