It's hard to believe that one can stay in a hotel within the city of Vancouver and hear the waves lapping. Check into room 527 and not only enjoy the view but hear the waves when the tide comes in. There is nothing like vintage to help one wind down and put life into perspective.

Thank-you for taking the time to write a review. I see that this is the second review that you have written about your stay at the Sylvia Hotel, welcome back. The location on English Bay does make for an excellent experience watching the ships on the bay and all the people jogging thru Stanley Park. At night guests often comment...

This was a first for us. We had a mini holiday in our own city, staying at the Sylvia for five days. We loved it! Every morning we woke to sundrenched rooms, and at night saw the sunset over English Bay. We loved all the light coming into the rooms and the fact that the windows all opened so we...

I really like reading the reviews of "first timers" to the Sylvia. I like to read what they say and what they notice and what they find important. Thank-you for taking the time to write a review. The views are great and we do not charge extra for pets ( I believe we are the only hotel in Vancouver that...

We visit Vancouver annually and we've always stayed with relatives in Kitsilano. This time, something came up and we had to stay elsewhere. My sister and her son had been going to the Sylvia hotel every year for 15 years and always raved about it - so we decided to stay there for this trip. Unfortunately, we may never want...

I was happy to read that you have family that have been coming for years to stay at the Sylvia hotel. It sounds like we have converted you as well. So many of our guests find us thru friends and family. Thank-you for your kind words and scores. We are a heritage site and we are proud to offer our...

The Sylvia has been a landmark in Vancouver's West End for a long, long time. We've ended up staying there because it's one of a handful of hotels in the city that accepts dogs no-questions-asked, and we travel to Vancouver with our 100lb American Bulldog fairly regularly. We'd have to cut her in half to stay at the Fairmont in...

I was happy to read that you were able to travel with your pet and yes we do not put size restrictions like some other hotels, plus we are the only hotel I know of in Vancouver that does not charge extra for pets, some places charge $25-35.00 per pet per night. We are a heritage site and the hotel...

I stayed here with my partner for my birthday celebration at the end of February. We had a fantastic time! The old hotel has so much character and class. The room we had came with a king sized bed, very beautiful high ceilings and was really quite spacious. The staff were all friendly, helpful and very accommodating. The English Bay...

Happy belated Birthday and thank-you for staying with us on that occasion. I agree with you that the location is great for all the reasons you mentioned and more. I always appreciate it when a guests makes a point to mention the friendly staff and service they received during their stay. I believe that all hotels have four walls and...

It’s been my pleasure to spend almost three months at the fabulous Sylvia Hotel on beautiful English Bay. My husband and I stay here every time we come to Vancouver; this year was a sabbatical year and we decided to take advantage of the Sylvia’s excellent extended-stay rates and give ourselves a real treat. The Sylvia Hotel is like no...

We enjoyed serving you while you were here and you and your husband can consider yourselves a part of the Sylvia Family after staying with us for so long. An old beauty. Restaurant, bar, and dinning. Smaller rooms in the old section, which is nice, larger room in the addition. Right smack dab on English Bay. Great sightseeing, with Stanley Park a short distance. Not cheap, not expensive. Great service, and parking.

Thank-you fro taking time to write a review about your stay. This hotel has a fabulous location - basically at the end of popular Denman Street in Vancouver and right on English Bay and the Seawall. It also has history, being over 100 years old and is picturesque, being covered with ivy. Things of note: -- The entire hotel (except the lounge) has a musty smell. You get used to it...

The location is always mentioned by guests writing reviews because in a major city to have the views and beach right across the street is special and being so close to the downtown core the Sylvia Hotel has the best location. Authentic last-millennium feel throughout this hotel. What's not to like about creaky floor boards and moaning door hinges? For all those allergic to sheetrock walls, robotic entry systems and clinically-appointed foyers, Sylvia (as her olde-world name suggests) is a fine, rustic alternative.

Welcome to our guests from Portland. With over 100 years of service we are a heritage site and are proud to stay close to our heritage and the offer the service of days gone by. We stayed one night, Valentine's night, in this Historic Hotel which I've always been intrigued with, being a lifelong lower mainland resident! Happy belated Valentines day and thanks for staying with us. I appreciate when guests mention how clean our rooms are. In my opinion you should not even have to mention that as it is so important and should be the minimum standard, however the housekeepers like reading it. Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
A hodgepodge of landscapes, the West End combines verdant gardens and blocky modern architecture, with Victorian bits and Edwardian bobs in between. It is a paradise for takeout food, take-away coffee, and perhaps incongruously, some of Vancouver's most languid lines of beachfront. English Bay and Sunset Beach invite swimmers, strollers, and picnic-lovers to take in dusk settling over the water, or to jog along with the sunrise, offering breathtaking views at any time of day. The West End merges together so many looks and flavors probably because it functions a hub: its the leafy pit-stop between nightlife and entertainment venues along Davie Street, and the shopping paradise that is Robson Street, offering visitors beautiful parkland to rest on, and quick, easy food to re-fuel with in between ventures.
