Detailed Reviews
The Mallard Inn is a quaint spot in Quidi Vidi Village, close to walking trails, a artisan collective. The service is first rate; we even had help taking our luggage to the second floor. Our room was quiet, large and beautifully decorated; the view was nice. There was a bottle of wine on arrival, a fridge with water, soda, and beer, and snacks on a shelf. In an adjacent building there was a happy hour at 3 with soup, bread, beer , tea. The Mallard has a restaurant across the road, reservations necessary. The only negative, we felt, was that "breakfast" was tea/coffee, juice, and a slice of bread. We felt that something a bit more substantial could be provided considering the price of staying there. A great spot for seeing the St John's area.

We spent one night here and loved it. This is likely the most well thought out hotel that we have ever stayed. All the details are there including the large bed with perfect sheets, the complimentary drinks and snacks, the local soaps and shampoos, the beautiful glasses, the TÃvoli Radio with Bluetooth to play tunes and the breakfast tray delivered to your door.
We also ordered the charcuterie tray on arrival. It was deliciosos and substantial so we had left overs to have on our drive the next day. We ate at the Mallard restaurant across the street which was amazing as well. The next morning went in a hike just across the road that gave amazing views of the harbour. Perfect way to start a day.

The Inn at Mallard Cottage is my favourite place to stay when in St. John’s. It’s small (only 4 rooms per building) which makes the stay feel more like being in a guesthouse than a hotel. The location couldn’t be better with views of quaint Quidi Vidi, walking distance to the brewery and Mallard Cottage restaurant and a healthy walk or short drive to downtown.
But the main reason I’m writing this review is because the staff went above and beyond to take care of us and keep us comfortable during a flight delay that meant having to stay in town longer than planned. Thank you Anya!
Looking forward to our next visit.

Last night was stayed at Mallard Cottage and were blown away by the architectural details of the house and the room. It had that cozy feel like an outport B&B but with modern appeal of a city cetntre hotel. There were many thoughtful touches like complementary drinks in your room as well as yummy snacks. We enjoyed the snow falling in the picturesque habour as we savoured our breakfast in the room. We treated ourselves to dinner in their restaurant and the menu was amazing, using Newfoundland ingredients with a twist. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

Overall we enjoyed our recent stay but the Inn has a way to go to reclaim its former reputation. The location is lovely and the rooms are truly ample with great lighting, comfortable bedding, and a nice large shower. There are no dressers and only a couple of hangers in the closet but there are a few shelves that could be used I suppose. For reasons unknown the soap provided was in the shape of a small ice cube and not really adequate for anything other than show.
There was virtually nothing offered in terms of advice on where to dine, where to hike, or what to do in the St. John's area. The staff, though friendly, did not seem quite prepared to provide the things this Inn was apparently known for when it was previously owned by someone else. Nor were they fully prepared to handle the issues that arose during our stay. I do recognize that this is the first season of new ownership and that there will be a learning curve for Larissa and Matthew but the nightly cost did not seem commensurate with the service provided. We were there for 3 nights and at no time did the new owners welcome us or acknowledge that certain things did not go as planned.
I hope the Inn succeeds . The location and the room layout are likely reasons enough to book a short stay here but one needs to have more realistic expectations than I did.

My wife and I found ourselves stranded at YYT late on a Friday evening in St. John’s when a music festival had just started. No rooms available we heard again and again until by chance we were referred to the Mallard Inn & Cottage Restaurant. And thank goodness! Cottage GM Joshua and his staff not only found a room at the Inn for us with the help of the owner, but they also reopened the restaurant to provide us with a delicious meal. Amazing service. Amazing hospitality. The Inn is beautifully appointed and the restaurant staff are fantastic. Thank you!

Well worth the visit - it exceeded my expectations. The food was a balance of innovative and respectful of Newfoundland’s culinary traditions. I also felt the service was attentive and thoughtful, particularly with our 2 people with special dietary requests. The new chef also came out to say hello and talk about our experience.

This was our 3rd stay at The Inn and our 1st under the amazing management of Matthew and Larissa. They have taken the best of what we have always loved about staying here and improved it even more. These new small touches made our stay the best so far. Curling up with a cup of tea on the new comfy sofas that they added to the room. Hearing a knock on the door with a thoughtful and well prepared breakfast delivered to our room. Good luck to you both...you are off to a great start!

Located in Quidi Vidi, a fishing village just minutes from downtown St. John's, the Inn at Mallard Cottage is a special place that feels remote and peaceful. The surrounding hills and nearby lake invite you to wander and the cottage offers great food. Don't miss the cod cheeks or cod tartar. There are many little details that make this the only place I want to stay when I go to St. John's. Can't wait for my next visit.
