The hotel lacks hospitality and warmth from the staff although the lady who checked us in was nice:) the ceiling light in the room flickers a lot. But the bed was so comfortable it made it hard for us to get up each morning .. we got the room with the jacuzzi and that was nice.. ice is available on the second floor and their breakfast at the cafe was really good. It is also close downtown. Huge parking space. Might come back.

Had an overnight is Monastery Spa & Hotel. Checked in late, upgraded to whirlpool room, and enjoyed a couple of Dildo Brewery sours while watching US Open conclusion from the whirlpool. Better than the club!!! Room was nice, large, clean with good space. Bathroom was tidy, should have two sinks with space. Shower was nice, hot with good water pressure. Plenty of clean towels. Bed was old; really. Badly need new mattress and bed springs (it is bowed). Staff is delightful; young, from all over and very attentive. Thank you. Breakfast was delightful. Enjoy.

The rooms themselves are fantastic...big bed, fireplace, whirlpool for 2 next to the bed - in addition to a full-sized bathroom. And the service at the front desk was great.

After that, it pretty much goes downhill.

When you stay in one of their rooms, you get access to the vitality room - this is an area in the basement that has a mineral bath, a hot tub, an ice bath, a steam room and small gym area as well as saunas in the change rooms. When this hotel first opened you were tended on hand and foot, got complimentary iced tea, the entire place was imaculate. Now its falling apart (the steam room hasn't worked the last 3 times I visited and instead of the soap and shampoo dispensers there is a huge tub of shampoo on a tv tray that you have to reach out of the shower to use) and not as clean as it used to be. And the service is terrible. It took 4 requests and over half an hour to get extra towels. There is no longer complimentary iced tea. No one seems to want to help - every time you ask a question or make a request you are passed on to someone else.

When I arrived my room wasn't ready so I left my bags in the room and went out for a while so they could clean the room and make the bed. When I got back, they had moved my stuff to another room...most of it that is. I had brought some food (birthday cake and drinks) but that didn't make it to my new room and no one could seem to locate it (I'm assuming it had been eaten at that point). The manager was very apologetic and replaced the drinks but I had to go out and get another cake.

I'm really disappointed in how this spot has gone downhill...I used to visit here a couple of times a year but it just isn't enjoyable anymore. If you are looking for a hotel room only - sure, this place is lovely. If you are looking for the 'spa-experience' that they advertise - you're not going to get it here.

Hopefully they will turn things around because for the high prices they charge here, it simply isn't worth it anymore.

I arrived |St. John's 6pm on an Air Canada flight from Halifax. The City of St. John's had been declared a STATE OF EMERGENCY. I took a taxi to the Monastery Hotel arriving there around 7pm. Everything in the City had been shutdown for 4 days except hotels and essential services and taxis. I asked at the front desk when I checked in if there was anywhere one could get something to eat....Absolutely everything was closed. Front desk staff said if I did find something to advise them as they would like to order something to eat as well. Approx 45 minutes later there was a knock on my hotel room door and a very nice young lady who had checked me in was at the door with a surprise COMPLIMENTARY dinner that was very good and very much appreciated. I did not ask where it came from as their cafe was closed.
Anyway, it was a very pleasant surprise, and these 2 fabulous people that were on the front desk duty that evening deserve all the kudos in the world for going above and beyond to provide a tired hungry traveller with a dinner. Thank you Monastery Hotel....I will be back.

Stayed in the Superior King Deluxe room over the weekend and it unfortunately was no where near the experience we were hoping for. Upon arrival we headed to our room to relax and watch some TV before heading out for dinner. However the cable box did not turn on for the TV so we ended up having to just watch something on our phones while we got ready. When we were leaving to go to dinner we mentioned to the guy at the front desk about the TV which he argued that we were doing it wrong however I know how to work a TV and this one was not working, thank fully that part was fixed by the time we returned however we returned to a random electrical cord now sitting on our bed. When we got back to the hotel after dinner and drinks we decided we would relax in the jacuzzi tub with the fire going. After filling up the tub we tried to turn on the lights and the jets however neither worked, the lights on the control panel would turn on but nothing would happen. Attempted to trouble shoot with the instructions they gave us at checkin but still no luck, so we decided to call the desk for help and got no answer there. Decided whatever as much as that sucks we can still relax in it and have the fireplace on to relax. The fireplace makes the most annoying humming noise though so that was useless to try and relax with. At this point we were so frustrated we decided to just go to sleep in one of the most uncomfortable beds I’ve ever slept in that made so much noise at any movement you made. This room and experience was in no way worth the $500 I spent to be there, the room itself was horrible as nothing worked properly and it was impossible to find anyway to actually relax there. Not to mention all the “add ons” I did to the room felt way over priced for what we actually received. Tried to fill out the paper survey they gave at checkin but there was no pen so couldn’t even leave the review of how bad of an experience it was. Was very disappointed all around trying to have a relaxing night out on our vacation in from Alberta just to spend $500 of wasted money. Would definitely not recommend to anyone, can stay at another hotel with a jacuzzi tub for half the price and probably twice the service. Not to mention no water to drink in the room and when we tried to get some from the desk the worker was asleep on a cot. Just bad all around and waste of so much money.

We stayed in one of the rooms with a jacuzzi rather than the standard room. Given the fact that the room had a jacuzzi, you would think that there would be robes available for guests in the room. There was not... There wasn't even an information book in the room to let us know if the hotel offers it or where we would find them if they did.

Worst thing, we decided to get in the jacuzzi and it didn't even fill up half way with us in it before the hot water ran out! I called the front desk to let them know and his response was, oh yeah sometimes that happens. Well, that's great to know. I wouldn't have booked a room with a jacuzzi in the first place. Actually, I wouldn't have booked a room here. The guy offered to come to our room but you know, we weren't in swimsuits and there wasn't a robe around so I told him not to bother. I'm not pleased with it here, I won't be back for hotel or spa services. We're currently sitting in bed watching TV which I certainly could have done anywhere.

We will not be recommending them to anyone. We will be telling people about the experience here. We didn't get what we paid for. I could have booked something much more comfortable with a nicer bed for half of what we paid to stay here.

If you are looking for a night out - stay home or stay somewhere else!

I will never stay here again. I purchased gift certificates to use. No where on the website nor on the certificate did it state that it could NOT be used for Valentines day. Only restriction was New Years Ever. So I booked for valentines day, stating at the time of booking I had a certificate. I get a call a month before asking which package I would like, I explained I dont need the package as I have a certificate. They said they will not be honoring the certificate as it cannot be used on Valentines day. I explained it did not say that anywhere when I bought it, and its not on the certificate. They've absolutely refused to resolve this situation. Will not refund me my money. Asked to speak to a manager and was told one would call me back. Never did. Call again and left my name and number and they returned this message. And again was told nothing would be done to rectify the situation. But they would be calling me back in a day or two. That was a month ago and I have since gone to the BBB. Still no resolution. Don't be scammed by them. They MAKE UP policies as it suits them.

I stayed at Monastery Spa & Suites last night March 12th and when leaving this morning March 13th I found the tonneau cover missing from my truck which was parked in front of the Spa building. I brought it to the attention of the front desk and was answered with no more than a shrug of the shoulders and that it must have been junkies. This parking lot and area has a history of thefts including a loved ones ashes being stolen from a vehicle as of late. I have not contacted the authorities for I am confident that this will not see the return of what's mine and I have since replaced it. I don't hold The Spa at the monastery responsible for the loss of my property but I do believe with the history of thefts there and in the area they should be doing more to ensure the safety of the customers and their belongings.
Sincerely
One pissed off customer.

This Spa has dispicable service. I used their hot tub and ended up in the ER with a chemical burn!! To make the best of it, the Spa is completely denying responsibility! The Vitality room was a mess as well. Use your money wisely and take it somewhere else!

I guess if you don't mind that your sink won't drain in the bathroom of your room and you have to wash your hands in the bathtub, or the fireplace doesn't work, or the staff is not helpful after you've had the passenger side window beaten out of your car in the parking lot while you sleep, or that the vitality room is closed indefinitely, or you can see the cracking silicone around the tub in your room, then you may enjoy your stay. I can assure you, I did not.

The staff are very apprehensive about talking about the vitality room closure. This was a huge draw for some, as a chance to use the steam room, sauna, jacuzzi pool and iceberg plunge allowed you to relax a little more. They don't talk about it much, but it's still mentioned on the website, and if you look at the magazine that is provided in your room (with a publication date of Fall 2014, I might add), you'll see pictures of the lovely facility that YOU CAN'T USE!

We called about our sink on two different times. Someone showed up, after the second call, with a bottle of drano. By that time the sink was full of water. No one followed up, no one seemed to care.

We also were notified the following morning of our stay that there was an incident the night before. We thought the staff had to come into the room to tend to the sink while we went out to supper. Not the case. The staff told us that our car had been broken in to. We asked does this happen a lot, they responded it has happened once or twice. We called the police to report it, and said that the spa staff told us that it has happened once or twice. The police responded with more like once or twice a night. We were never warned about break in's. They do not have any security patrolling the parking lot, nor any security cameras. My advice is get a cab to the spa and leave your car at home. After waiting for at least an hour, the staff still couldn't find the key to the garage to get the shop vac to help in cleaning out the glass in the car. Finally they gave us a broom, with no other assistance or gloves. The gloves would have been nice as my boyfriend cut his finger on the broken glass.

With this experience, I would say that I'll never be back. It isn't a higher end facility anymore. Do yourself a favour and save your money for another hotel. This one has lost that loving feeling.

I think you would have to ask this question direct to the hotel. Certainly the room we stayed in had enough space for a cot/travel cot.
