We stayed for three nights during July, and we're disappointed overall. First we we're not aware that our room wouldn't be cleaned or refreshed daily, imagine our surprise when we came back from being out all day only to find nothing had been cleaned in our room. I called the front desk only to be informed that since COVID they only refresh rooms every second day and do a thorough clean on day 5. I was surprised to say the least as during the height of COVID we stayed at another Hotel in the city and our room was cleaned daily. Sadly I thing COVID is the go to excuse for poor service.

Additionally if you park in the back of the hotel where we usually park because my hubby has mobility issues be prepared that you will have to endure a wall of smoke from the smokers by the door.

Check-in was smooth and the staff at the counter were pleasant. The public bathroom on the second floor had no hand sanitizer and was not very well equipped with paper towel.

This is the first time I haven't been satisfied with a stay at this property sadly.

Dear Jocelyn B, Thank you for choosing our hotel while visiting St. John and for taking the time to provide feedback about your experience. Pleasure having you as our guest. I am very sorry that you did not experience an exemplary stay due to cleanliness in our hotel and that your room was not serviced. This is certainly below our usual high standard of service. Please be assured that I have noted and forwarded your comments for the management to improve. In the midst of the inconvenience, I am glad to know that your check in experience and the service of our staff was still appreciated. I very much hope that you will grant us the opportunity to prove ourselves again. Best Regards, Ben W. Case Manager IHGService

Stayed for one night. Room was as expected, recently renovated and very nice and clean with great beds. We were there as 2 adults and 2 children as one of children's birthday. Looked forward to the pool and slide. Not sure if they know there is a pandemic going on with all the people in the pool. Way too many people! Was very uncomfortable and left early, so that was disappointing. Next we went Eastside Mario's which is attached to the hotel. Kids were to eat free. Well that was a big discussion! We had to coupons from the hotel but apparently the restaurant is not keen on honouring them. Then, the food the children wanted was available, so they decided to have pizza, but the pizza oven just broke! The kids ended up having chicken nuggets and fries and were so disappointed that we just left. Thank God we brought snacks. Then, kids were to eat free , another racket in the morning. A word of advice to the Hotel-stick by what you offer and figure out what the pool situation and what your agreements with that awful restaurant.

Hi there, JKR2013! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with our hotel. I'm so sorry about the pool situation and the food experience. The situations you have raised are definitely not what we expect from any of our properties, nor something we want our guests to encounter. I'll share your thoughts with our hotel management team as a reference for future enhancements. On a lighter note, I'm delighted that you found the cleanliness of our rooms satisfactory. I've shared your compliments with the team and have been acknowledged by the hotel management. I truly hope that we will have a chance to make it up to you and provide you with a better experience upon your return. Best, Peter J. Case Manager IHGService

We booked a family suite but it was not what we expected. Didn’t state that it came with two small bed rooms one with two twin beds and other room same as any other hotel room. It was dated and could use some improvements. I would recommend that you verify what you are reserving.

East side Mario’s attached restaurant hasn’t changed in years food selection not the greatest, serve was great but food left something to be desired.

I stayed at this hotel because of the proximity to the health sciences, as I was having chemo that week.
Hotel website stated that the hotel was under renovations. Now, I have stayed at hotels that were having renovations, but never like this. The lobby was like a dirty building site with materials just laying about. Because of the 'renovations', we never got the room (king bed executive) we had booked, but were of course charged for it.
The room was a standard room with the furniture from the room we had booked stuffed into it. We didn't have a microwave (as was stated in the room description), so had to phone down and get one, which was met by a 'but this is only complimentary' remark, which was not helpful. Then we discovered the fridge was not turned on, so had to take it out and turn it on ourselves. Covid 19 was blamed for the fact we couldn't get the bed sheets changed while we were there (7 days stay!), so we got some sheets sent up to change them ourselves (which were the wrong size the first time and pillow cases were missing). We have stayed at 3 hotels during the pandemic and all have had turn down services, so blaming it on the pandemic is totally unacceptable. Throughout the stay we had 2 keys just stop working for the room as well.
On arrival (Sunday) we were told that the pool only opened from 6.30 to 7.30 even through the website said it was open (this was also blamed on the pandemic, even though other pools in hotels were opened with booking time slots throughout the day). Later discovered by chance, as there was nothing indicating the times, that the pool was open from 5 on a Friday and 10am on the Saturday. It appeared that they were just making the times up.
The customer service apart from somebody working on the Tuesday of our stay was absolutely shocking and they appeared uninterested in making our stay enjoyable. Even when we were checking out I used the large double doors at the back, as we had a lot of luggage since we were there for a week, I went out these doors once, but when trying to get back in, they were promptly shut by a member of staff and we were told to use the smaller doors, that were in fact not opening
together.
No signs up in the elevator saying that only a certain amount of people were allowed in it, or hand sanitizer.
All in all, we feel totally lied to about the room and state of hotel.

I have stayed at this hotel many times and have always had a pleasant experience. I was very disappointed with my most recent stay. The hotel is under major renovations. I booked my room using the IHG app. It did say the hotel was currently under renovations. But I did not expect it to be so extensive. The whole hotel is an active work site. Check in was slow and painful. There was one employee working at the make shift check in desk. She was also expected to do the pool bookings and take care of all guest service needs.
Our room was old, musty and dirty. As soon as we opened the door you could smell the musty mouldy smell of the room. The room was in disrepair from the furniture to the walls to the fixtures. The beds were extremely uncomfortable, lumpy and sagging! I expected the room to feel clean, especially due to Covid. This was not the case. Furthermore, many rooms had garbage laid out in the hall (as you were expected to do) and none of it was collected during our stay.
Our experience with the pool was also poor. It was evident the pool area was not cleaned between swim sessions.
Overall it was a poor experience. The hotel is under major renovation and the areas that are open to the public are dirty. The hotel seems to be very understaffed which leads to poor customer service.

I'm sorry you experienced issues with the stay, especially with the current renovations, check-in, room odor, decor, bed, cleanliness, hallway, pool, and staffing. First..the suite i booked was not available and I was not informed until it was too late to book anywhere else.
I was not told that the hotel was under construction:
the side entrance we had to use had a hazard of workers on a boom truck basket above the doors.
Smokers stood right outside the building. Especially off-putting as I had 6 kids with me.
I reserved the pool for 9 and they only reserved me for 6 and told me that was what I requested..I know that is not the case.
I was told although the restaurant was not open for breakfast there would be muffins, cereal bars, juice etc. In the lobby..reality: there was eggs in a zip lock bag in a bar fridge and no way to heat anything.
I could go on.
I've stayed at many holiday Inn locations across the country..including this one..Holiday Inn Portugal cove road st. John's: you have severally dropped the bar and lost a loyal customer.

We understand that early check in isn’t always available, but we did request a call or text when a room would be ready…that didn’t happen!
We were surprised when no maid service came after the first night. We were told that this only was provided very 2nd day…that didn’t happen either!…3 nights and no clean towels etc…
When we first got our room there wasn’t any coffee in the provided tray. We eventually tracked some down.
When we tried to bring the luggage cart into the hotel a truck was blocking the only ramp in- the front desk was aware and couldn’t care less (even though they were told whose truck it was)…the vehicle remained there all day long.
The restaurant had THE ABSOLUTE slowest service I’ve ever experienced even though there were only 3 tables with customers…
My advice- find another place to stay in St. John’s!

We stayed here for 1 night in May 2021. Overall it was good value for what we paid. We had a stay & shop package and it came with a Costco gift card. The hotel was clean & quiet. They are still undergoing renovations but it didn't affect our stay at all. A small complimentary breakfast is included and it was a juice, granola bar, yogurt, fruit cup & breakfast sandwich. We thought it was nice since we didn't know that it was included.
We booked a pool slot well in advance so we were disappointed when we checked in and they had changed our time without notifying us. We were disappointed but made it work....small problem really! The pool and waterslide area was awesome! Our son loved it and so did I :)
The restaurant on site was great. We had good service and the food was delicious. We travelled with a child and were given a coupon for children eat free at the restaurant, which is another bonus.

Overall we had a good stay.

Stayed a few nights in July as part of vacation to St Johns.

Pluses

Close to airport and easy access
Free parking onsite
Room was overall clean. Comfortable bed and pillows.
Our room was ok overall.
AC if anything was too cold and no issues.
Quiet - there was a wedding reception the one night and didnt hear anything
Nothing nearby to walk to. But not a long drive or cab ride to get downtown. For ballpark a cab to Quidi Vidi was only $15 one way. Multiple cabs waiting on site for fares if need a cab

Cons

Entrance has smoking on either side and multiple garbage pails between the sets of sliding doors. Pails always overflowing, cigarette butts overflowing and required walking through smoke in and out every time. Not a great first impression.
Shower had lots of long hairs in it when arrived stuck to wall and soap bottles - cleaned up before spouse saw them. Out of body wash and had to ask for more.
Coffee machine in room. Coffee replacement varied each day sometimes short on pods and other times short on creamer. Little thing but strange. There is a great coffee/chocolate place on a few blocks away that is worth the trip for morning java
Balcony was grey dirty concrete with nothing to sit on. We went out to see it and didnt go out again. Good powerwash and couple of half decent patio chairs could make a difference.
On site East Side Marios restaurant - closes at 10 and appears designed for meals only. Nowhere else nearby for late dinner and drinks just made last call on arrival for bite to eat. Kudos to staff for serving us with only 20 mins left in their day.

Overall - it was an older Holiday Inn, fairlystandard/ basic overall but we just needed a place to sleep for few nights and was ok. Stayed downtown for other half of our trip and cost double per night

We booked two rooms at this hotel travelling with two families. We booked a hotel based on the pool and waterslides upon going to the pool in the evening. The waterslides were closed despite calling before booking to ensure that the slides would be open. We were told that this was the first evening that the pools would be open along with the slides on a non-weekend for the summer. Therefore, we booked two rooms.
We ended up with very upset kids who were unable to use sides. Upon calling the front desk the receptionist told us that there was a sign up, indicating that the pool was supposed to be open with the slides, but the message didn’t get pass along to staff. She told me she would follow up on it and call me back however she never did. I also sent an email to the hotel outlining the concerns and no one ever emailed me back.
We stayed on the first floor the first rooms pass a beauty salon. They were cobwebs in the window and mould on the wall. There was no conditioner in the shower, and when we tried to use shampoo, the middle holding fell off, landing on the floor of the shower..
we are not picky travellers but the money we spent to stay here for multiple families, and not having the slides and being provided or false advertisement, and no one following up with us is not good enough for the price we paid.
