The Rendell Shea Manor is a Heritage Home located in the Historic East End of St. John's. This is one of the best areas downtown to walk the city. There are local cafés, craft stores, restaurants and local Pubs. We are within minutes walk of Signal Hill, The Rooms, The Battery, George Street and the Harbor front. Afternoon coffee and tea are available in our sunroom or on our covered deck. The Rendell Shea Home has retained most of it's original period character. It was the home of St. John's first Mayor, Mr. George Shea and his wife Margaret Rendell Shea. The home remained in the Shea family for more than 100 years. We are delighted to welcome you!

Detailed Reviews
I was most impressed with how clean, yet homey, and historical this large well appointed multi level, home is. Many rooms to choose from and quiet. My Room was on the first floor and had the most spacious bathroom with a jet tub! Perfect after a day of hiking the harbouside coastal walk up to signal hill. You’re minutes from walking to all the amazing shops, and restaurants in St. John’s. Thank you Hosts do an amazing job of giving you information and updating their Facebook page for fun things to do.

My husband and I stayed one night. We could walk to breakfast and George St. for shopping and dinner. The house is high on a hill so could be challenging for some. The room was large and adequate for our needs. The house itself is being restored but it didn't hamper our stay. The host left out tea buns, coffee and tea in the morning. Instructions were very clear and we had no problems. Would stay here again.

Comfortable, tastefully decorated, and quiet.
We slept GREAT!
High quality bedding, super comfortable bed and pillows.
Next to the historical Government House! A must to walk the grounds, many wedding pictures taken there do take advantage.
Very clean
Fantastic host!!! I didn’t reach out because everything was almost perfect, but the moment I mentioned a small detail - she tended to it immediately!
Great experience!

My husband, my two daughters and their husbands stayed here for two nights.
To say that their brochure was misleading would be an understatement.
Our first impression was not favorable as the paint was peeling on the front
of the house and the stairs to the front door were in need of paint. Our
'welcome' consisted of instructions to remove out shoes whenever we entered.
We stayed on the three rooms on the third floor which were poorly furnished.
The doorknob on one door kept falling off and one shower had mold in it. The
'linens' and bedspreads were shabby and there was no one present to make
inquiries. Every bed and breakfast we had stayed at up to that point were no
comparison. The kitchen was open for breakfast only and there was no choice
of breakfast items and definitely no 'home baking'. The location was good,
but everything else needed attention.

Response from Earl N, Owner at Rendell - Shea Manor
Responded 12 Aug 2013
Thank you for taking the time to review our home. For six weeks during the summer of 2011, I had an opportunity to finish my history degree in London, England. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to visit the world’s most historic castles, country homes and churches. Unfortunately, this meant leaving my Bed and Breakfast business for an extended period during peak season. We received no less than six negative reviews during the same period, which are posted here. As an owner, it is entirely my responsibility to ensure that our guests receive excellent value and great stay at our B and B. This did not happen and excuses never compensate for bad service. Our only answer is to concentrate on our most basic services to ensure that each person who stays with us has a positive and memorable experience. Our most recent and overwhelming reviews reflect the sincerity of our mission and the fundamental purpose of our business. This does not discount the few who have been disappointed with our service. I sincerely apologize that your experience was not dealt with in a manner that left you satisfied with our services. Our efforts, which are reflected in the majority of our reviews, demonstrate that we are serious about your complete satisfaction with our services. I hope that we can have the opportunity to live up to your expectations in the future. Thank you sincerely for your time and understanding. Earl Norman Owner

This beautiful B&B is on the corner of Military Road, across from Bannerman Park. The binder in the room describes the rich history of the house.
Our room had a long jacuzzi tub, tv, comfortable bed, and great quality towels. The room was a comfortable size and had nice light.
Excellent location, within walking distance to George Street, Water Street, and the Rooms.
The owner Earl was absolutely fabulous! He was kind on the phone, and during breakfast he seemed genuinely interested in hearing about our trip, and offered to let us keep bags there after checkout since it was our last day in St Johns and were going to airport later that day.
The breakfast was incredible - french toast, yogurt, good coffee, fruit, and fresh apricot spread.
Considering a room is about the same price as a hotel room, I would definitely come back and would highly recommend it!

After a 3 night stay at the Sheraton for a business meeting, we wanted to have something a little more intimate, with character, and I had decided to book in a B&B. We are in our fifties and appreciate places were service is impeccable. We do not need all the bells & whistles big hotel have, and appreciate the very personnal service a B&B can offer. It seems we are not alone! We met nice couples who were staying there, and my wife and a great time chatting with everyone!
Earl is a great host, the location is very nice, and is what you can expect from a home about 135 years old. Great history, and perfect location to visit St-John's.
The breakfast was exquisite, and I would definately recommend this place if you are looking for a geat B&B experience in St-John's!

My stay at The Rendell-Shea Manor was exceptional. The manor is extremely well maintained and staffed. The owners, Gary and Earl are warm and friendly. Highly recommend the Rendell- Shea Manor as it is St. John's best kept secret!

7 of us stayed here in August. Whilst the rooms were large (and gloomy) and the bathrooms were satisfactory and clean, that is the only positive thing I can say about this place. Terrible breakfasts - all pre-packaged. Nothing freshly cooked - in fact nothing cooked at all unless out of a packet. All served by students who appeared to be living at the place. In fact on our last morning, we went out for breakfast instead! On our arrival at 10pm after a flight delay - a note was pinned to the front door with instructions. We had called to say we had been delayed, but there was no where to make a cup of tea, or anything. Whilst looking around, a man came out of a room and then went upstairs, past me and entered another bedroom on my floor - without saying a word in response to my greeting.. Turned out he was the owner, and couldn't even be bothered to say 'good evening'. Very un-Canadian, I would say after travelling to the country on 14 occasions. This place is more like a boarding house, and a grim one at that.

Upon arrival to the great province of Newfoundland, we rented a car and immediately went to the Rendell Shea. We were greated by a student who was just about to leave for the day (no owners or staff around). Student was great but there was no orientation to the house on how to get into the home (thank god we asked and was given the numbers to the lock). That was OK however, after travelling 4,000 k, it would have been nice to have been offered tea, or water, etc. None of this was available through the evening and a number was given to phone if emergencies occurred.
We carried our luggage up three flight of stairs so warning if you are not fit enough to do this.
The next morning we awoken to Boxed Pancake Breakfast with blueberries thrown in for measure. As my husband and I do not eat pancakes, we asked for a piece of toast. We were given toast and then asked if it was possible to have peanut butter or jam. Another couple was there noted cereal so they had cereal and said it was stale. There was no fresh fruit or any options to anything else. The poor student (a different student) felt so bad for us as we clearly were astounded this was called a B&B.
The second and last morning we stayed we were given french toast for breakfast. Again, no fresh fruit and no other options.
That evening after touring NFLD and returning to the Rendell Shea, we noted that the sitting room was closed (didn't really feel welcome anyway). Again, the students had gone home for the day and the owners are no where to be found. No one was around to ask for tea or water or even ice.
Upon leaving the Rendell Shea, we flew back to Halifax to continue on our journey to the eastern provinces. I noted the same night on leaving that I had left my blackberry charger in the room. I have phoned long distance and left numerous messages and emails for the owners to contact me but they have failed to do so (this is a month later).
There is nothing wrong with the rendell shea for cleanliness, however, you can find this at any hotel for less than the cost of the rendell shea.
What this B&B lacks is friendliness, comfort, warmth and above all, integrity. The students (who are nice and spend a few hours a day trying to run the home) advised us that the rendell shea's owners have lots of houses and businesses and are very busy.
Maybe they should think of calling this something else - apartments for rent daily, etc.
ps: students have advised me that they have left several messages with the owners regarding my blackberry charger but are sorry they have not responded. What a shame.

My husband and I had the chance to stay at the Rendell-Shea Manor for a few days. It was stunning!
Our host, Earl, was so nice, enthusiastic, full of amazing suggestions and very knowledgeable about St.John's and the surroundings.
The Manor itself is a wonderfully preserved century old house, warm, cozy and charming.
The breakfasts were delicious, the staff very friendly.
It is also ideally located close to downtown and the Rooms, we could basically go anywhere interesting on foot.
I would not hesitate to stay there again in the future, or to recommend the Rendell-Shea Manor to anyone!

Yes, we have rooms with 2 beds.
Thank you
I am sure they can. You should write to them directly. We stayed in a two-bedroom condo which was quite spacious but it wasnt located in the downtown core -- about 15-20 min walk.
We stayed in the two-bedroom condo and if we had a car, parking would have been free and conveniently in the front door.
JohnStormy01 asked a question Feb 2015

We stayed in the two-bedroom condo. Note that there is a cleaning fee charge. This was surprising to us as this would be considered the cost of doing business. I never get charged a cleaning fee when I stay in a hotel or in other inns/B&B for that matter.
