We stayed here after a nearby wedding and thought it was great. Not the most modern hotel, but clean, functional and set in lovely grounds. Breakfast was great, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. Good value too. Would recommend.

The hotel seems to be run with staff needs in mind rather than customers. The restaurant is not open on a Friday evening and the bar shuts at 9pm on other nights. There is no room service or mini bar. Under the beds are caked in dust, dirt and old socks. The curtains were falling down and there was constant noise from the boiler room right under the window. The room is stuffy but you can't open the window because the fumes blow in. The view is over asbestos roofs covered in muck, cigarette butts and discarded syringes. I was there for two nights. The television wasn't working on the first, and I was told to check the cables! I had checked what time latest check in was (10pm) and the woman was evidently irritated that I id not arrive until 9.45pm. Beyond this I can't rate the staff as I didn't see anyone. Having had very little sleep because of the boiler noise I received a call telling me I needed to check out in five minutes time, but there were no staff to be found when I tried to do so four minutes later.

Good value for one night stay. We booked the hotel before reading all the reviews. We agree that the manager is a little lacking in charm and warmth and communication skills could be improved. However we were asked if we needed help with our luggage. Our room was small but very clean. Linen and towels were spotlessly clean. The hotel has not been refurbished for some time, but we felt that was reflected in the price. We enjoyed an evening meal which was very tasty and reasonably priced. The dining room looks over the garden. The two ladies serving were efficient and pleasant. One lady (the managers wife?) answered my question about where the best places for a walk were. All in all, a very quiet hotel with lots of history, ideally situated to explore the local countryside.

It is apparent that the manager / owner has not paid heed to the previous consistent reviews which we unfortunately had not read before our stay on Friday evening . The door was opened by the gentleman of the house and there was no welcome / smile whatsoever ! The hall to this lovely old house should snd could be grand but it was dark - dingy poorly lit and taking into consideration near to Christmas not Twinkling light whatsoever . Like previous guests a £20 debit card swipe taken without explanation especially as there was no bar open or dining facility for the evening . The main staircase also could be grand feature the carpet was threadbare as previous comments for months . Our room was no doubt the one mentioned in a previous review suffering. Cracked window pane and cracked and broken bath panel . One of the bathroom lights was flickering and on its way out therefore like being in a disco ( for those who can remember discos) . On a positive note the bed was comfortable , towels and bed linen clean .Water hot and bedroom clean . The TV failed to operate and when pointed out on departure was informed that the box had dropped out . Perhaps some guidance or instructions in the room which there were none may have negated the issue or highlight to it. Tea and coffee and kettle were available with real mugs . We did not book or try breakfast based on the poor reception we received on arrival and a guesstimate that things might be amiss . How pleased we were we didn’t . Sadly a lovely old country house hotel in need of some expenditure love and attention and perhaps management who want to welcome and please the guests that may book . It does appear that guest are an inconvenience to the gentleman that received us and whilst there are clearly financial constraints to improving the business politeness and personality and welcome cost nothing !

I had booked a log cabin at this hotel. On arrival there was a man at the reception. No ‘hello’ or ‘welcome.’ He just sat there staring at me so I spoke. His response was ‘name.’ He then proceeds to ask for my debit card to add a pre-authorisation charge to it. I didn’t notice anything about that on Booking.com so I asked what the charge was. He then responded in an aggressive manner “why are you questioning me?” My response was “because it’s my card, and my money, so I want to know why.” He told me he was the manager. I told him his attitude stunk………which it did. Clearly he hates his job. After this I left and did not check in. Refusing to reimburse me for the booking I was charged for. Avoid this place like the plague.

Please do not waste your money or time here. The rooms are disgusting and staff are so rude. You are better looking else where. The photos are not what is advertised. The place is run down. And ready for rats to move in

Upon approaching the building from the bottom of the drive I was quite impressed, a nice oldy worldy building with lots of character. Went to check in and there was nobody to be seen in the dark reception area, someone finally appeared but I think my arrival was a great inconvenience for them. Now after running a hotel myself for many years, I know it doesn’t take a lot to crack a smile, did I get one, did I hell. In fact no greeting what so ever, just a card machine branded in my face for a ‘pre authorisation’ of £20 - doubt I will ever see that again! I was handed a key and asked what time I wanted breakfast the next day. Off I toddle to my cabin, what a lovely room on first inspection. Great size, lovely carpet, fresh smell and private. Then I began to notice the cobwebs, the cracks and mould in the grout, the grimy taps and shower head. I had a decent shower but nearly went flying on the tiled floor from steam in the bathroom, no fan or window present. As always when getting ready for a wedding, I fancied a glass of Prosecco, I was handed a warm, flat flavourless drink in a dirty glass. My sleep was amazing, the bed was a brilliant size and extremely comfortable. Fast forwards to breakfast, I hadn’t even sat down before I was asked what I would like to eat, when I finally got round to ordering off the menu I was told it would take 25 minutes for a croissant and my fruit never appeared. So instead I ordered a very small bit of breakfast. 2 slices of cold toast appeared at the table, between 3 people! Now when I go away I like to relax at breakfast, however on this occasion I felt like we had to leave asap as they packed everything up around us. Overall I’d say it’s a great place to get your head down after a long journey, just not suitable for a weekend away. I paid £92.50, for a place that should be around £49 per night.

I had one of the log cabins No 31 - was very clean tidy and comfortable bed plus air con wax great - shower room huge and clean - loved the decking overlooking the garden . Food was very good and breakfast was really nice - it’s quirky and quaint and takes you back in time - I loved it - the young lady at reception and waiting on us was very nice and friendly - yep loved it - not really sure why they have to take £20 as a deposit from your card and transfer it back days later ? Never known that before ever ? Need to drop that process please - overall Enjoyed the stay tho and would return ✅✅✅ Hotel could easily be used on a film setting ✔️ ANDY 👍

Hotelier was surly and demanded a "pre-authorisation" from my credit card in case we damaged the room. He then charged my credit card with £20 for this pre-authorisation stating the credit card company would refund it in around 7 to 10 days. The stair carpets are threadbare. The room was, in fact, damaged upon us entering it: cracked en-suite window pane; cracked bath panel - see images. On the positive side our waitress in the morning was polite, as was the hotelier's wife, and the full English breakfast was both well presented and delicious.
