I don't know why there aren't more places right on the South Downs Way, but it was an absolute treat to get to the end of the long day of walking and have beers and beds waiting. We stayed one night en route from Amberley to Housedean. The staff was friendly and bell tent was a terrifically unique bit of glamping adventure. The evening food was decent enough, though prices reflected the convenience rather than the quality. The breakfast baps were just the ticket to get us going the next day, though, and it saved us a good few miles of walking to and from the nearest hotel in Steyning. Be warned, the hill getting there from the west is a beast, but very worth it for that beer at the end. Also, I can't stress this enough: book directly with the YHA. Rates can vary by day, but we'd initally booked through a 3rd party booking site which didn't seem to reflect this variation, so we almost got stuck into a price nearly double what it should have been. (I won't name the site directly, but *booking* is what they do, wink wink) Book direct.

Staff were very on top of cleaning. Showers rather underwhelming (lack of water pressure) and the plumbing was noisy at night. But beds very clean and comfy, staff helpful, and a great location. Good instructions in advance.

Had a lovely short stay in one of the landpods. They are small but cosy and were a great hit with my kids. I was worried it might be chilly but they provide very cosy duvets and the pods are actually very insulated. Even faced with hail during an epic summer thunderstorm we were warm and dry. Food from the cafe was good, the pizzas are big and we slightly over ordered. The breakfast rolls are delicious. Bathroom facilities are basic but functional. For the price I was really happy with everything. Staff were friendly and helpful. The pods and bell tents are quite close together but it was a quiet weekend when we stayed and it was nice to chat to others who were there. Top tip, if you buy firewood check the bag for the little kindling pack and matches included, I failed to spot it the first night! Makes lighting the fire easier, although a bit more kindling/smaller logs would be helpful. Loved exploring the South Downs Way and Shoreham is a great beach destination if you want something a bit quieter than Brighton.

Firstly to say that Michelle the manager and staff on duty throughout my stay were professional and efficient, offering good advice and practical tips for the stay and the weekend ahead, being a good asset for the company, and promoting all the activities with support and help. We booked for the big night out, and working by the information supplied and pictures given booking the event. Originally, I had booked to be in a safari tent, but apparently these were not ready for the event so got moved to what was described as a luxury bell tent, but had many failings. . The inside here is mostly floored as plastic ground sheet with 2 very thin skimpy rugs that slide easily, to cover a small section, a very small stove for heating if desired, and a bed on futon frame on the floor with a hard mattress, on booking I had enquired on the bed and told glamping has proper bed as in safari tent, From the front of our Yurt there is a view of a building site and also being in the country there is a road/track past the hostel in use through the night by motorised vehicles. Food is also an issues, as was sent a menu to have a look at and was thus expecting a choice of what would be on offer, but this was not so, there was only the supper club offering of spaghetti balls and pasta in meat or vegetarian, although the manager seemed happy to talk this was supper, with no concession for allergies, food issues etc, and no drink offered but tap water, I see this as being a failing but realise it is directed from head office. Realising pre booking that many of the YHA hostels seem to have a lack of disabled facilities, I did not look on this occasion only glancing at the access report. However, it would seem there is none at all, and in many cases handrails that would be expected on access stairs and approaches not being present. When I booked the event and gave my hostel choice I informed the booking that I was disabled with mobility issues, and was not informed that I would have issues with access to all areas of the building, inc the toilets which involve several tricky stairs and narrow doorways, even the shower has several steps. Most of this establishment would seem to be in need of renovation work and painting, as much seems worn. At no point do any of the images match what we have received, as taken from this I was expecting to be camping on a flattish garden, with mown grass, however the reality is to be camping on a slope of rough, uneven grass with a pallet step outside, also uneven, and the lawn on 35% slope with rough undulations, drops and holes. I was informed that there was wifi on site both by the staff and on your website, but could not find any, and on reading the access report it would state that wifi is not available. I’d also recommend reviewing the access report, as being vague it would cover the fact that there is no access and this should be stated clearly on your webpages, so that issues do not arise.

I am 16 and I was on a walk with my friends on the South Downs Way - with about 9 miles to go we called up saying we might be late to arrive and they said they would prepare some pizzas for us when we got there at 930pm, which is later than they would normally have their reception open. The pizzas were just what we needed having just walked 25 miles and we ordered breakfast for the next morning with no stress either. The rooms in the hostel were good, with the beds already made and sinks handy as well, and the bathrooms were good too. We woke up the next day and enjoyed bacon butties and set off on our way. The one downside of this place is that if you approach at nighttime by foot, you will be greeted on the final road by a swarm of strange flies, which will scare you but are completely harmless. Overall this is a great place to stay and I would recommend this to travellers and people looking for inexpensive accommodation.
