St. James Club & Villas receives mixed feedback from guests, with its scenic location earning high marks for the serene beaches and beautiful views on offer. While the range of amenities, including diverse dining options and water sports, is widely appreciated, some guests feel that the rooms and certain facilities could benefit from modernization. The atmosphere is generally described as relaxed but occasionally lacks vibrancy. Opinions on value and service diverge; some visitors mention additional costs and inconsistent service, which detract from the overall experience. Cleanliness is deemed satisfactory by many, yet issues with room upkeep and beach maintenance have been noted.

Just leaving. Great stay in royal suites… really don’t understand bad reviews. We found food and service were largely great and certainly grounds can’t be faulted. Perhaps trick is to pay for royal suites- daily maid service/ pre book meals a week in advance so you always have a timed slot rather than the non book restaurants where the lines are long. Also this is Antigua, so head for your meal before you are ‘hangry’and expect yo wait longer than at home. Also depending on what you order, it could take longer.
We found the piccolo mondo really woth the extra/ $37 for the most fabulous lobster or filet mignon in a lovely setting, was a small price to pay- get there early and have a cocktail… all included in your all inclusive.
The docksider and 11-11 were good for light bites; the coffee shop and Joanne, are open 24 hours with a warm welcome, good coffee and delicious yoghurt pots/ other treats.,
We played tennis every day and never had to wait for a court- but the wind strength can be testing at times.
The gym is really well equipped and underutilised… body pump class ( which is not that) was fun and only 5 of us showed up.
All in all, we’d highly recommend for a relaxing indulgent week- English cricket team stay here when they come, so can’t be bad 😉

It’s our 7th visit (over 15 years) and I think it speaks volumes that our 18 & 19 year old are still happy to holiday with us at this beautiful location. We stay in the villas which are super comfortable and we love the fact you can have a leisurely breakfast at 10am and there are still plenty of sunbeds to pick from in various locations around the resort. We also love the activities from kayaking to pickle ball, decent tennis courts to the fantastic gym. You can be as lazy or as active as you please. Thanks to all of the team but a very special mention to chef Keeta, who went above and beyond every night we saw her to cater for my son’s gluten allergy - even bringing food to the table on buffet nights and asking the pastry chef to create a pudding especially for my son. She is an amazing asset to the team. Thanks also to Nyel for service with a smile and creating his first ever Bob Marleys for us - 10/10!

We have been to St James Club several times over the last ten years. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, and the location is amazing. There are two beaches one that faces the Atlantic and the other faces into a sheltered bay.

We stayed in a beachfront room, and could step out onto Coco Beach and watch the sunrise. The room was spacious, and very comfortable.

Early June was a very quiet week for the hotel, and there was work going on at Piccolo Mondo and the adult pool which was closed. The hotel is a little tired in places however the food, and staff are both excellent. I met the owner whilst collecting coffee very early in the morning and he was very polite and we had an interesting discussion.

The hotel is fully featured and is only really missing an Ice Cream Bar.

During COVID the hotel introduced a $24 US a day charge for cleaning and Wifi. This has continued despite the tail of of COVID. As we had purchased an All Inclusive rate, it does sit badly that there is an additional surcharge per room. This really does contradict the all inclusive part of the rate.

The room cleaning is only every other day which for a hotel at this level is odd, and we would prefer daily cleaning.

The staff were all excellent and in particular

Joeann in the coffee shop
Michael T at the breakfast smoothie
Chad in the main bar
Estamella in the coffee shop
Daniel at 11bar
Keanalee in reception
Cressida at the pool bar

Dear John, Thank you for sharing a thoughtful and detailed review of your recent St. James's Club stay. We're delighted to hear that you continue to enjoy our beautiful location and our team's warm, friendly service. It's lovely to know that waking up to the sunrise over Coco Beach and staying in your spacious beachfront room added to the charm of your visit. We appreciate your understanding during the quieter early June period, especially with the maintenance at Piccolo Mondo and the temporary closure of the adult pool. We are committed to continually enhancing our facilities to meet guests' expectations. It's heartening to hear that the excellent food and dedicated staff helped offset these temporary inconveniences. Meeting the owner and having a personal conversation certainly adds a unique and personal touch to your experience, reflecting the hospitality we strive to offer at St. James's Club. We understand your concerns about the $24 daily resort fee, especially when you've booked an all-inclusive package. This fee, introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, helps us manage fluctuating operational costs, including shipping, food, labor, and utilities. It's crucial for maintaining our high service standards and is directly linked to our resort's occupancy and the ever-changing local expenses. We've prominently displayed this information on our website, third-party sites, and booking confirmations to avoid surprises. We recognize that the current room cleaning schedule of every other day might not suit everyone's preferences, and we are actively reviewing this policy to better align with our guests' expectations. Your feedback is invaluable as we strive to enhance our offerings and provide you and your loved ones with an unforgettable Caribbean holiday experience. We're thrilled to hear your praise for our exceptional team members, including Joeann, Michael T, Chad, Estamella, Daniel, Keanalee, and Cressida. They will be delighted to know that they contributed positively to your stay. Their dedication to guest satisfaction is a cornerstone of the St. James's Club experience. We eagerly look forward to welcoming you back for another excellent holiday. Here's to many more beautiful mornings on Coco Beach and continued memorable experiences at SJC!! 👋🏽😊 Warm regards, The St. James's Club Team

Our first impressions were high as we drive into this secure, exclusive feeling resort. The check in was smooth and we got a ride in a gulf buggy to our room.

The room floor was sticky, the bathroom was very dated and there were many mosquitoes. We fed this back to Guest Services the following morning and were told the room would be cleaned and ‘bug sprayed’. We asked if another room was available but heard nothing back. The following morning we went back to Guest Services to say no one had addressed our issues and the room had not been cleaned. The manager did then arrange for this to be sorted that morning. Overall the staff at the reception were unwelcoming in comparison to another hotel we had stayed at on the North side of the island for a few days as we were keen to experience different parts of the island on our first ever trip to the Caribbean. There weren’t any personal touches such as a welcome drink or birthday acknowledgment as there was in the previous hotel.

When checking out, we were expecting to pay a mandatory Tourism Guest Levy of USD $5 per person per night but had to also pay an additional resort fee of USD $24 per night which we have since discovered applies to all Elite Island chain hotels (it’s in the small print of their website).

On a positive note, the restaurant staff were friendly and the buffet food was very good indeed. We complimented one of the chefs as the evening buffet was so tasty and a great selection on offer. The water sports team and car hire services were also very friendly.

The resort is very close to many beaches and Nelson’s Dockyard so it is a great location.
I’d highly recommend visiting Shirley Heights on Thursday or Sunday as it’s only a 15 minute drive away and a great experience.

We were drawn back to the resort following many super visits over the years.
The location remains idyllic and the gardens are beautifully tended.
This was our first visit since Covid and some things seemed to have changed. There was no longer an easy check in for the Royal Suites and no concierge
Still, our room was as expected with no real changes in many years. The a/c worked and the bed was very comfortable. It was good to see decent toiletries in the bathroom. I’m still puzzled why a ‘luxury’ AI resort has a kitchenette.

The beaches were fine, although no old chap dispensing cold drinks on Coco Beach.

We were dismayed at the lack of restaurants on many evenings. Even breakfasts were unavailable at the Coco Restaurant. On some evenings the only effective eatery was the Rainbow Garden. Yes, the Piccolo was open, but it’s cheeky to charge $80 a couple to eat there at an All Inclusive resort Indeed, 11/11 was open, but that’s mainly pizza /burger so hardly a high end venue.

Even then, the Rainbow had menu items missing on several visits (scallops and lamb one night). The beach grill had tortilla chips/salsa and taco salad unavailable on day 1. “We’ll have some tomorrow “ was the reply. No - even on day 15 these items were not in the menu. The supervisor said it was an island wide shortage. Really? Hmm. The hotel shop had many (expensive) tortilla chips.

Staff were generally kind and helpful except the beach grill where one almost felt unwelcome. Plenty of staff milling around, but a fastidious lack of eye contact made getting served a chore.

The room was cleaned very well and housekeeping ladies were friendly, as were staff at the adults only pool.

A safety issue was only intermittent street lighting at night in the alleys near the Royal Suites. Impossible to see in the dark.

To sum up; I’m sure you can have a great vacation/holiday here. Just don’t expect perfection.

Thank you for sharing your thoughtful and detailed review. We appreciate your loyalty and are delighted you’ve enjoyed many wonderful visits to our resort. It’s heartening to know you still find the location idyllic, the gardens beautifully maintained, and the comfort of your room up to expectations. Your recognition of our housekeeping team and other staff members is greatly valued—they work tirelessly to ensure our guests feel at home. We’re sorry to hear that certain aspects of your stay fell short of your expectations. The changes to the check-in process for Royal Suites and the absence of concierge service post-COVID are adjustments we’ll be reviewing to ensure they align with the high standards you’ve come to expect. We understand your concerns about limited dining options on some evenings and the availability of certain menu items. While we strive to maintain a consistent variety of offerings, unforeseen supply chain issues can occasionally arise. We regret the inconvenience this caused and are actively working to mitigate such occurrences in the future. Your feedback regarding staff interactions at the Beach Grill is concerning, as warm and welcoming service is a cornerstone of our values. We’ll address this with the team to ensure a more attentive and positive guest experience. Similarly, your comments about safety and street lighting will be urgently reviewed to ensure that all areas of the property are well-lit and secure for everyone. We’re glad you recognize the potential for a great vacation here and appreciate your balanced feedback. We hope to welcome you back for another visit, where we aim to meet and exceed the expectations set by your cherished past experiences. Take care, St. James’s Club.

We spent two wonderful weeks in Antigua earlier in October 2024 and wanted to thank the wonderful staff who made our stay so memorable.

When we arrived we were shown to our 1st floor beach view room which was very comfy and had everything you could need: Large King bed with nice linens, tea/coffee making facilities, fridge, dual sinks in the bathroom, bath and shower combination. We were checked in and finally out by Keanaleen and Calica who checked in with each time we passed the reception desk, nothing was too much trouble.

The food was great being able to chose different restaurants each night was nice we particularly liked the Rainbow restaurant for Italian night and Docksider for roast dinner on Sunday evening. Shout out to some of the servers Letoya, T'wanna, Vanessa, Luinda.

Breakfasts were taken in Rainbow with Michal the smoothly maker par excellence! Lunch times were spent at 11/11 good choice of food - from pizzas to fresh fish.
We had a wonderful evening at Piccolo Mondo in the 1st week and it was wonderful - the food was amazing and the drinks expertly mixed by Vincent! My only minor point due to the heat wave during our stay in Antigua the restaurant was extremely hot (being a lady of a certain age) and I would have preferred to have sat under a fan.

Each evening we could return after dinner to the Jacaranda and Chad was there serving drinks.

The resort has a 24 hour coffee shop serving coffee, tea, snacks and chilled beverages and our star staff member there was Joeanne who always was happy to brew my iced tea.

We booked 2 trips through the resort both of which we thought were good value - the Pink Panther safari and the trip of Stingray City to swim with the stingrays of the island.

Pools - we stayed mainly by the main pool Reef Deck Bar and plentiful towels available.
Beaches we spent time on and swam in the sea on both sides of the spit of the resort.

We thought the resort was great - there is some building work going updating rooms but the builders were polite and noise was minimal.

Finally a big shout out to our wonderful cleaner Heather who kept the room spotless - checking back in with us on one day when my husband was unwell due to a pre-existing health condition and we needed to stay in the room. She brought us more coffee and tea and made sure we had everything we needed.

We would love to return and have started saving for 2025!! thanks

One of the best locations on the island.
The food at all restaurants is very good quality & a very good variety of options.
The public area are to a reasonable standard for Antigua.
It is a shame that the quality of many rooms is so poor, the ones I saw (4) on this visit all needed repairs and the decor was poor.
One frustration as a so called All Inclusive Customer is the ability to get an alcoholic drink at the bars. The service is so slow that it makes me wonder if this is deliberate to reduce overall consumption . BTW All Inclusive does not include Resort Fee & Tax which is charged per each day of stay on top of what you paid when booking.
Generally staff are friendly & helpful, however, apart from the gardeners who seem to be very active, most staff do as little as possible, as slowly as possible. I appreciate it can be hot & humid but their pace is ridiculously slow. There was little or no evidence of Supervision or Management activity, although I did see one person walking around with a “clipboard” on the final day of my two week stay. As an example, at a restaurant you are usually shown to your table, asked if you would like water & tea or coffee. Then you wait & wait, often having to ask again or go & get some yourself. The same applies to getting a drink at mealtimes. There didn’t appear to be a shortage of staff, they just need organising & to be prompted by a supervisor or retrained in customer service. When you do get served they usually respond to a smile, so it seems they are reasonable intent in their work. One notable positive exception to all this is the Lady at the Coffee Shop who was excellent.

This trip included thirteen family members so was quite an expensive trip !
I would like to return to this resort for its location & the quality of the food on offer, however, it needs some serious improvement before I could judge it as offering Value for Money.

We stayed for a week at St. James's in Antigua with our two daughters. The structure is very large and comfortable especially in the common areas. Really nice panoramic location with a beautiful tropical garden. It has three restaurants included in the all-inclusive rate, all of a good standard. There are also two equipped beaches (one ocean view and one lagoon) plus a swimming pool with adjacent open bar. The beaches are very well-kept and truly evocative with tall, very scenic coconut palms, sunbeds and towels always available and plenty of space between one sunbed and another. Good and varied buffet breakfast. Our room had an ocean view and some aspects that could however be improved: the bathroom was a little old and needed to be modernized, the room was cleaned every two days, which seems to me to be a timing that is decidedly unsuitable for a 4-star superior structure. The wi-fi is free and with a decent signal both in the rooms and in the common areas, although it is absent on the two beaches. Coming to the beaches, the oceanic one was often covered in algae (sargassum) which reach the shore in February. The water, once past the algae, was still beautiful and transparent. The property cleans it every morning. The lagoon is beautiful but the water is a little stagnant depending on the days and tides. There are many much more beautiful beaches reachable by car or taxi 20/30 minutes from the property. I recommend Long Bay and Galleon Beach. The staff is generally very courteous and helpful. Sometimes a little slow, especially in serving the requested drinks.

We have just returned from a fantastic Family holiday at SJC.We have been many times before and this year has been as good as previous years.
We stayed in a reef suite and a premium double and in both rooms the furnishing and fittings were of a high standard as were the bedding and towels.
There are a choice of restraunts that offer a wide range of meals to suit all tastes We had some lovely meals during our stay.
The 24 hour coffee shop is a feature set in a great location offering a selection of bevrages and cakes.
The resort is set in beautiful gardens and the two beaches are sandy. .There are plenty of sunbeds and parasols.
All the staff throughout the resort are amazing they cannot do enough to help .
A special mention to Linnell ,Odell and the crew of the Calypso Cat who once again made our snorkeling trip to Green Island great fun.
Also a special mention to Vernon on the water sports who went the extra mile to make our holiday memorable.
All the other guests we spoke to were enjoying their holiday too.
Well done SJC we will be back next year.

This hotel is set in an amazing location. The property is well laid out and in the main, well kept. They have several choices of pools and a lot of facilities. Some of the staff are pleasant and friendly - Alex, Judy, Cressida and work hard to make guests feel welcome. There are two great beaches and a lot to do. Rooms are okay but nothing special and housekeeping is only every other day. Be aware you will be charged another $24 per room per day even if you’re on the all inclusive.

So why only 3 stars. I know this hotel is ‘at a price point’, but I don’t think you have to pay top dollar for good service.

- WiFi is intermittent across the resort at best and didn’t work in our room at all (Reef suites).
- We frequently had to chase to get towels by the pools (sometimes they didn’t arrive until 10:30 even though the pools opens at 9am). I even raised it with Jennifer the GM on one day, and still we waited another 30 minutes.
- On 4 of the nights we stayed here they ran out of beer at four different bars.
- On our first night we waited 1 hour 15 minutes for our food to arrive at Eleven11 and on average well over thirty minutes on other nights.
- Often the music was too loud making conversation at meals difficult.
- Inconsistency of meals. We’d order the same meal one day and it was delicious and at another time not so good.
- Between 8am and 9am the coffee shop queues were very long (I waited 20 minutes one morning.)
Why don’t you put 2 people on at this time?

Did I raise my issues with management , yes I did and got the response “I’ll raise them at the management meeting”. No feedback was given was given to me; I’ll never know what happened. My husband also raised them at check out and he was told “that will give us something to work on”.

As an observer and someone who stays in hotels in many different countries, including other hotels in Antigua, the hotel lacks supervision and staff lack training. I believe this is a quite good hotel at a price point and particularly would suit families.

Response from GuestAmbassador05, Public Relations Manager at St. James Club & Villas
Responded 1 Dec 2024
Thank you, Anne Marie, for your detailed feedback. We appreciate your perspective and the opportunity to address some points that may not fully reflect the quality, effort, and value St. James’s Club Antigua consistently provides. While we’re pleased you acknowledged the resort’s stunning location, well-maintained property, variety of pools, and the warm hospitality of team members like Alex, Judy, and Cressida, we respectfully clarify some areas of concern. Wi-Fi connectivity, particularly in remote parts of the property such as the Reef Suites, can sometimes experience interruptions. However, reliable access is maintained in high-traffic areas like the lobby and restaurants, ensuring guests stay connected. We’re actively working on enhancements to strengthen coverage further. Regarding pool towel availability, our team prioritizes replenishment each morning, and any delay beyond opening hours is undoubtedly an exception rather than the norm. We regret any inconvenience this caused during your stay and will ensure our processes remain efficient. Running out of beer is an isolated and rare occurrence. St. James’s Club has robust inventory management to avoid such disruptions, and we will thoroughly investigate why this happened during your visit to prevent a recurrence. Our dining venues, including Eleven 11, are regularly celebrated for their variety, quality, and atmosphere. While occasional delays during peak times can happen, they are far from standard, and we are addressing the feedback you provided regarding wait times and meal consistency. Similarly, your comments about music levels have been noted, and we’ll ensure a better balance is struck to maintain a lively yet comfortable dining environment. The coffee shop is one of our most popular amenities, especially during peak morning hours. Your suggestion for additional staffing during these times is excellent and will be considered as we work to streamline service further. The $24 daily resort fee is standard across similar regional properties and supports enhanced services, amenities, and sanitation efforts. This fee is disclosed during booking to maintain transparency for all guests. As for your comment about supervision and training, we respectfully disagree. Our team is consistently praised for their attentiveness, professionalism, and commitment to guest satisfaction, reflected in countless positive reviews. While we regret if you felt your concerns weren’t fully addressed, rest assured all guest feedback is taken seriously and discussed to drive improvements. St. James’s Club is proud to deliver exceptional value and memorable experiences to travelers and families alike. We regret that certain aspects of your stay didn’t meet your expectations, but we’re confident that the overall guest experience here aligns with the overwhelmingly positive feedback we receive. We hope you’ll consider giving us another opportunity to exceed your expectations and show you why so many guests return year after year. Take care, St. James’s Club.

If you upgrade to Royal (which was lovely - great location and private pool & poolside bar) you can make dinner reservations for a whole week.
