Whilst enjoying the beautiful drive along the Hauraki Gulf from Thames to Auckland I discovered the Shorebird Centre. Knowing nothing about birds, I stopped in and was greeted by friendly, informative staff who explained to me what it was all about. I did the pleasant walk to the blinds but was there at the wrong time of day. If you...

We are keen bird watchers and this part of our New Zealand holiday was specifically designed to allow time to visit this birding site of world importance. Every year thousands of waders stop off in Miranda on there north-south migration. Some of the birds travel across the globe to winter in the Hauraki Gulf while some rare New Zealand endemics...

This is a top notch spot to go to see migratory shorebirds. The site is ideal because the birds hang around for a god period of time during the tide cycle. There's also a well-placed hide in case of drizzle. Bino and scopes are available for hire.

We are regular visitors but yesterday and today we had such a pleasure in joining an inspired fun project for children about NZ’s migratory shorebirds. Informative and engaged staff. Comfortable and affordable accommodation.

This was the second time my husband and I visited and stayed at the Miranda Shorebird Centre. We stayed in the Whimbrel Suite, which is basic motel style accommodation with all the necessary facilities for self catering and is good value for money. The centre is a nice walk to a couple of hides where a huge range of shorebirds...

After recovering a day in Auckland we drove to Miranda on our way to Cathedral Cove. A bit before the center we saw a single tree in the middle of a field . Below in the shade lay the cows above covering the branches were many spoonbills and some cormorants. From the center we drove back to the hide which...

Weather permitting , this is a magical place. Bask in the sun on a snow white beach of shells with views over to the Coromandel with a pair of binocs watching birds and you are near to heaven. Well, that was our first visit....this time a hurricane and driving rain blew us back from the hides as hordes of folk...

We called at the centre to check on the best visiting times then came back later to walk to the hides. Owing to changes in the coastal dunes the walk was longer than we expected. However the birds did not disappoint! The Visitor centre staff were helpful and the shop well stocked.

We did not spend the night here--simply enjoyed the excellent exhibits in the visitors center, then walked across the road and down the trail to the viewing area. We were there at low tide, so most of the birds were at some distance away, but saw loads of stilts and swans, larks, herons, and some silver eyes, which I hadn't...

I am not sure why this is listed uner lodging, but I am reviewing this as a birding destnation. This is an EXCELLENT place to go to see a variety of shorebirds and others. I was lucky to be there at high and low tide and saw a variety of birds including all 3 expected NZ gulls, royal spoonblls, wyrbill,...
