After a 7 hour nightmare of a journey from north wales I was looking forward to a lovely shower and good meal at Oak House. What a disappointment. No warm welcome , no help with luggage through a maze of up and down steps. The place is shabby , with dirty carpets. Our room was on the front facing the square. The rug was stained . The wall was water stained .The en-suite had a broken lock as if someone has forced entry. The door looked like it was retrieved from a skip!Nice modern shower spoilt by black mould and dirt. Tiny sink on a piece of shabby chic furniture totally did not work ,black mould ,peeling paint . No towel rail ,nowhere to put or dry towels ,or hang clothes. Toilet handle stuck when flushed. Mirrors were fogged and unusable for applying makeup. The worse thing was they asked us by email to book a table for a meal which we did as the food on website looked lovely. WRONG! No hot food ! We were offered a cold platter for two and my kind husband agreed to share the vegetarian one. After being confronted by a 1 lb of cheese , a handful of rocket,12 grapes ,stick of celery, some olives ,hummus,6 sundries tomatoes ,slice of bread and oil for £35 we went to bed early. I calculated the ingredients could have been obtained from Aldi for less than a tenner. Fortunately the bed was comfortable. Shame there were no blackout curtains so we were awake at 4 am! Breakfast in the dirty bar served by a frosty member of staff was again disappointing Scrambled egg on sourdough with smoked salmon sounded good and was ordered but arrived with brown toast! We couldn’t wait to check out.

We only stopped here for a quick coffee so cannot comment on the rooms, but the pub looked clean and the coffee was good. The bar staff were welcoming and polite, and the toilets were very clean. The pub/hotel is right in heart of Axbridge and worth a visit.

What a lovely place to stay. We stopped over for one night and we're glad to have struck gold. Feels more of a pub than than a hotel and is right on the town square. The lady running reception and the bar was very welcoming and helpful We felt very comfortable in the well appointed room and were pleased that the rooms were quiet. Being an historic building the walls were thick so we and our dog had a good night's sleep. We decided to have dinner in the hotel. The dining area is informally in the bar . We were delighted to have lovely restaurant quality meals rather than standard pub fare and lovely deserts so thy obviously have a good chef. Choice of wine was good and interesting. Breakfast was served by a friendly member of staff called Tracy. There was plenty of choice and the full English British breakfast was the best I have had for many years with beautifully cooked field mushrooms . Limited parking outside the hotel if available, but there is a free town car park a short walk away . Lovely historic village to visit . All in all would definitely recommend the Oak House and hope to repeat the experience in the future.

This has to be one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in to the point it ruined my birthday. The room was small and had dirty carpets and chunks out the walls. The bed was tiny and the mattress was rock hard and kept falling off its stand. To use the toilet you have to sit sideways otherwise you can't shut the door and the shower was dangerously hot. When it came to sleeping it was impossible because of how noisy it was. There was a constant loud banging from the windows and a very loud humming noise and then the room above us sounded like 2 tonne elephants stomping around . The food was expensive and clearly bought in cheaply made food . The only good thing about the stay was we could go to the coop and get some decent food at a reasonable price and going in to cheddar felt like a holiday away from the hotel. I would never recommend this hotel not even to my worst enemy. If I could give 0 stars I would. I had a better time when I had covid at a music festival and had to stay in a tent.

A village pub with rooms above it. Parking is limited outside during the day but you are likely to find a space in the town square later in the evening. Didn’t really spend any time in the pub. I had room one, which was clean and tidy however I found it quite dated and the shower room was quite small. I did have a good nights sleep though which is all that matters.

Stayed here en route to a family funeral. Useful location just off the M5. Lovely little medieval square. The room was comfortable and the shower was good. Evening meal very tasty and reasonably priced. Wine list good and again, reasonably priced. Breakfast was basic. Staff very friendly and efficient. There were a couple of things that weren’t that good. One were the stairs to the bedrooms. No lift, being a medieval building. The carpets weren’t clean.

We have over the years popped in when I have visited my friend for a drink and a meal over the last few years and usually has always been an enjoyable, friendly place. Last time in September we felt it was not up to normal standards and then in November felt the same if not worse but this time proved that it was not the place it was. On arrival we walked in up to bar and the guy behind was busy talking to I presume a regular or friend and took a full minute to come and serve us. We then found a seat and after our drinks were finished and place empty apart from one at bar empty no one came to check if we wanted another. I had to go to bar, order and ask for menus which we read while we waited some time for our drinks and when they arrived we had already looked at menu and decided it was not appealing so we drank our drinks and went elsewhere for food. It is such a shame as it was so lovely before with homely but upscale gastro food and a more friendly place, what is wrong with having really nice classics done well! We also use to love the blue cheese pizza which we had a snack! I would understand the lack of table or staff checking on us if busy but it was not and the guy who I think the guy at bar called Adam/Alan/Aaron did not seem bothered. Such a shame!

I have stayed here several times before pre-pandemic and enjoyed fantastic food, spot on service and comfortable rooms. However, this recent trip, admittedly out of season was a big disappointment. There was no rose wine available, beyond two glasses from an opened bottle. The dinner menu was burgers or burgers - nothing like the choice advertised on their website or as we had experienced during past stays. The room was comfortable but grubby - bathroom showing signs of wear with mould on the tiles and the pop up bath waste did not function. Breakfast was OK but the coffee- which was served in a metal cafetière - was in fact poor quality instant coffee made up and popped in the jug - I checked, no coffee grounds! I hope they get busy through the Spring and Summer and can afford to up their game in time for our next stay!

Went to try and have lunch, walked through the door, there appeared to be 2 men at the bar with a laptop having a business meeting and a lady drinking wine. Stood like a lemon for what felt like an eternity but must have been 5 mins without being served or acknowledged. It’s difficult enough as it is going into public bars as a single female without being ignored! Went across the square to the Butcombe pub to be greeted, seated, served and fed.

Stayed overnight here for a friends wedding and have nothing but good things to say about the place. A lovely old building in a beautiful setting overlooking the square with a cosy and well stocked bar and a comfortable dining room. Our room was at the front of the building, was spotless and had everything we needed, we slept like logs in the very comfortable bed and we were completely charmed by the church clock as it chimed the time while we drank our morning cuppa watching the news. Breakfast was very tasty, just enough and with plenty of tea and toast. We don't live far from here and were staying so as not to have to drive home after the reception but on the strength of this stay we have decided that we will book again and have a little staycation in the future where we look forward to sampling a meal in the restaurant and having a relaxing night away from home.
