Howfield Manor Hotel captivates guests with its charming, historic ambiance and tranquil setting, making it a favored retreat among travelers. The friendly, attentive staff often receive commendations, although the breakfast service sometimes reveals a need for greater consistency. While the rooms exude historic charm and coziness, there is a call for updates, particularly in the bathrooms. Nestled conveniently close to Canterbury, the hotel's location is ideal for exploring Kent. Guests generally regard the stay as good value, appreciating the clean environment and lovely gardens, despite some dining criticisms.

We have just returned from a 5 night stay at this lovely hotel. We had lots of events planned to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary but all sadly cancelled. We had been looking for a hotel that provided daily housekeeping services and had a restaurant on site. This is not a soulless boutique hotel but a charming and comfortable place to relax. The staff here are amazing, so very friendly and helpful. Our room was great and we booked into the restaurant every night for dinner. A good selection on all three courses and good portion size. The full english breakfast and evening meals using fresh local produce were so delicious. This hotel was perfectly situated for visits to Canterbury, Herne Bay, Broadstairs and lots of pretty villages en route. There is lots of outside space to sit and have a cup of tea and just relax. We booked for an afternoon tea which was amazing. Worth missing lunch so that you can enjoy all the food. We shall definitely be back to this great hotel.

Easy to find and plenty of parking. Reception very friendly and offered to help with bags. Bedroom was large with a bath in the en-suite. Bed also comfortable and the TV a good size. We had enjoyable couple of drinks in the bar & bar snack. Breakfast in the morning was freshly prepared and very tasty. The hotel was very good value for money and we would certainly return if staying in the area

We wanted to stay in Canterbury as a base, to travel around the area (its a 5 minute drive to the city centre). We stayed at Howfield Manor for 4 nights. The service from every single member of staff was exceptional. Particular mention goes to the reception staff, waiters in the restaurant and chef who were simply superb. They are totally accommodating, have perfect manners, a pleasant disposition, they smile and have a can-do attitude. I mention this because we have stayed in far more expensive hotels and not encountered this level of service. Yes if you're going to be super picky its isn't the most modern in terms of facilities and room furniture but then the price reflects this accordingly and the location/setting is beautiful. The rooms are very clean and well provisioned, there was a decent sized flat screen TV with digital channels and we most definitely got a good nights sleep. There is plenty of parking too. You should totally ignore the negative reviews, this hotel doesn't deserve them. As with many things in life, its always more enlightening if your try things out for your yourself before making a judgement. Please note that this review is 100% genuine and I am happy to be contacted to verify its authenticity.

Very disappointing on so many fronts. Indeed this hotel made it into my bottom 3 hotels I’ve ever stayed in. This is a 3* going on 2* ! I hate having to do this but…..
Noisy, room 9 was over the kitchens, so late at night and early mornings we were disturbed. The small fridge in a broken cupboard was so noisy we turned it off at night.
The only small window in the room overlooked a large function marquee only 3 meters away. So no view of the gardens at all. The bathroom had been refurbished but alas they went for style over substance, in that there was next to no water pressure in the hand basin and toilet. The shower and bath were better however the shower over the bath was so narrow it meant you had the dreaded clinging shower curtain.
The tv was awful, very dated and had horizontal lines going through it.
On a positive note, most of the staff were friendly and the breakfast was adequate but not anything you wouldn’t expect. No fruit, without asking for it and no espresso !
The room was cleaned well each day although the large cobweb high on the wall remained throughout our stay.
The location is great for the park and ride into Canterbury but the hotel is sited next door to a large industrial estate meaning many delivery vans and lorries.
I guess in these post COVID recovery periods we expect corners to be cut and if only half of our issues were addressed it would have been value for money.

We were disappointed with our stay at Howfield Manor as other guests' reviews were very favorable. Our room was as described but the bed was extremely soft and one morning our toilet became blocked, although to be fair this was cleared by the evening. We also found that covid precautions were very minimal as none of the staff wore masks although there were notices around the hotel asking everyone to do so and we only saw one hand sanitiser which was by the reception desk. The breakfasts were buffet style so that all the guests were touching jugs, spoons etc. We found the breakfasts were below average with out of date cereals on the buffet table, and the hot choices had clearly been in their heated containers for a long time, as the fried eggs were solid, and the bacon had dried out. The quality of the sausages and bacon was poor too. Dinners didn't live up to the high ratings posted by other reviewers. Great location for visiting Canterbury and the surrounding area though.

We were shown around the delightful manor house and gardens and it was lovely but a slightly jaded. Staff very friendly and helpful. However, Cod and Chips were about £1.50 more expensive than comparable venues and the Coke was served as a can plus glass with ice and the price was £2.40 per can - way too much.

We stayed here on the last night of our pilgrimage to Canterbury, arriving just before dusk, wet and tired. The welcome we received was one of indifference.
The building is a beautiful old Manor House but the inside has had all the soul removed and it is now a poor quality corporate style venue.
Food was good. Service was good but with no personality or Bon-homie.

Near to Canterbury, but you wouldn't know it, the Howfield sits in its own parkland. Rooms are reasonable size and well equipped - inc fridge with water
Nice bar area and outdoor seating attentive staff
Dinner was very good, Well cooked from a simple but varied menu. Again staff were attentive - perhaps a bit quick between courses

We were looking for a decent hotel with safe parking closer to the Channel Tunnel as we had an early train and the car was fully loaded. This hotel was perfect. Beautiful setting, the most amazingly friendly and helpful staff, clean comfortable rooms and lovely meals. The charming receptionist Eva was so kind and made us very welcome. We couldn't stay for the breakfast so she asked us what we would like as a take away picnic. The night porter had them all ready for us at 5 a.m. The waiter (sorry didn't get his name but he was Hungarian and a great guy) was very attentive and spent a lot of time going over the wine list and making suggestions and even bringing us tasters. We had been expecting a quick meal then an early night ended up having a great evening and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. About 30 minutes to the tunnel - well worth the extra few minutes.

Stayed at this lovely hotel, located just by the North Downs way ( and by Pilgrims Way too) had booked a single room, but was upgraded to Double room really nice with lovely view of gardens and the lake, And so peaceful too. Excelent location for walking along the North Downs, and many other footpaths well marked to walk around, lovely countryside, woods, fields vineyards and orchards. Just outside Canterbury too. Excelent service from the staff, obeying all covid rules, had a really good dinner, and bar area had a good choice of drinks. As another reviewer pointed out shower pressure is low, perhaps the pumps which make some noise are starting to fail. Otherwise a really lovely hotel.

All food is cooked to order, so if you have any specific requirements make sure you advise the staff before ordering. My sister is lactose intolerant and they ensured there was food that she could eat.
