This review would have been a 5.0 if it weren’t for the breakfast experience. But let’s not focus on the negative as there are so many positives to this little village hotel. I built 5 and 6 star business and resort hotels all across SE Asia before retiring, so I do know a bit of what I’m talking about. The arrival is at the property’s quaint Pub. A wee bit ackward with having to discuss your details while patrons of the pub looked on. But truly not a real problem. The Pub is nicely appointed and wreaks of ole’ English style and flair. The cleanliness of the Pub and the Hotel was impeccable. The lunch menu at the Pub was beautiful. Upscale Pub style food offered up in a very nice presentation and reasonably priced. The hotel room was quaint and the turndown was presented nicely. Bed pillows, sheets and Down Comforter appeared to be new. The bathroom is a bit outdated but the cleanliness outpaced the decorations. Overall, the hotel room was well worth the money spent and the overall stay was 5 stars. However, with the good, comes the bad. In this case, minor issues but issues that would be good for the hotel management to address. The dog in the room. A dog was barking numerous times during our stay that appeared to be staying in one of the other rooms. It’s always been my thought that dogs are no place for any hotel room. None of us have and idea what the dog that stayed in your room the night prior, did to the room, no matter the courteousness of the dog’s owner. Late night eats. We arrived back at the hotel at 10pm after going to the theatre. The Pub was still open but there wasn’t any late night dining for the Hotel Guests. This of course is well understood since the hotel is so small but the management should offer (for sale of course), something even like packaged sandwiches for the late night hotel guest. There were only chips and nuts. The breakfast experience. Breakfast is included in the price of the weekend room prices. The nice part of this though is that the breakfast is made to order and off the menu and not a typical buffet with bacon that has been warming there for hours on end. Nice touch. The breakfast setting is in the rear of the Pub away from the bar view which is really nice. The room is nicely appointed and lots of sunshine. As we were the only hotel guests taking breakfast we had the restaurant to ourselves. The only Waitress was not a happy person this day (March 12) it appeared. It’s not to say she was rude but suffice to say that her demeanour did not reflect the quaintness of the hotel and Pub. She served us overtop the railing alongside us in order to make her walk from the kitchen, shorter. Breakfast was off the menu with several really nice choices for all appetites. The food overall was ok. Then, in the middle of a quiet lazy breakfast, the Waitress started setting up the buffet line for lunch with one of the Chefs. There was a good bit of noise so much that the TV that was turned on the news could not be heard. After setup, the Waitress and the Chef started speaking loud enough for us to hear that they were not happy with hours worked and perhaps, some overall disgruntlement. Check out was a breeze at the Pub. The overall stay gets a 4.8. Great clean rooms. Terrific Pub detached from the hotel. Would I stay there again? Absolutely!…
Visited The Evenhill for a Sunday carvery with my husband. The roast was delicious and so much choice with all the trimmings. The staff were very attentive, the chef carving the various meats was super and went above and beyond in assisting me, even carrying my plate to my table… a super lovely chap and a real credit to the business. We will definitely be returning.
This pub accommodation was brilliant, dog friendly, room was very spacious, and so clean, never stayed anywhere so clean!!! All the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, the food was fantastic. Also you can catch the bus into Canterbury right across the road, dogs welcome on the bus, return fare was £11.00, but worth it not to have to worry about getting back to car park and being able to enjoy a lunch time tipple!!! The only negative was that this would seem to be the only pub/evening place to have a meal in the village. My husband and I will definitely be re visiting.
Just spent three nights at the Evenhill. The accommodation, food and staff were excellent. Its ideal for a visit to Canterbury. Cars are not allowed into Canterbury. The Evenhill is about three miles from the city. There is a bus stop outside the door with buses running into the bus station in Canterbury every 20 minutes. From the bus station you can get buses all over the area. It's a great way to travel around, esp if you have a pensioner bus pass! Canterbury is a great place for a city break. The cathedral is magnificent. Very glad we chose the Evenhill for our short break.
Beautiful old pub with annexed rooms in barn . Fairly small room but spotless and huge bathroom. Breakfast included and eaten in pub .Very good ingredients in cooked breakfast ,very tasty .Croissants and cereal also available . Lovely staff .Recommended
Family birthday meal, nothing was too much trouble. Staff were helpful. Food was plentiful, certainly not complaints. All very tasty even for some of our picky eaters. Garden is spacious with plenty of seating. Inside there was a friendly vibe.
I’ve never stayed in such a noisy room. Although the room itself was nice and had everything you would expect, trying to sleep was near enough impossible. Banging, kids screaming. I stopped here to save driving the 200 miles back home in one day. To be honest, I’m worried about driving back because I’m going to be so tired through lack of sleep. Serious sound proofing needed. Ruined my stay .
We booked last minute not sure what it would be like and found that we had found a hidden gem ! The rooms are in a separate building away from the pub , plenty of parking available too. The rooms are freshly painted , clean and with comfortable beds. The bathroom had a bath and powerful shower with plenty of hot water and nice toiletries. The food in the pub was excellent we had a lovely evening meal and the following morning breakfast which again was delicious , hats off to the chef ! The staff were friendly and helpful , check in and out was seamless and if we are in the area again we will definitely be back it is such good value for money and we had a lovely stay.
I had a lovely and very competitively priced lunch at the Evenhill. The log fire was going so it was cosy and warm in there! The staff were very helpful and offered almond milk for my dairy intolerant friend, and a slight change in the food offered to reflect that too.
Stayed for 1 night while visiting the area. Lovely pub and accommodation was great. Room exactly what was needed- very comfortable bed, everything clean and tidy, plenty of tea and coffee, beautiful view over the countryside! Bathroom with bath and shower a bonus and the toiletries were a nice touch. Plenty of parking . Restaurant- had dinner and breakfast. Dinner menu extensive lots of choice and everything tasted fresh and well cooked well worth the money! Breakfast had a great choice with something for everyone- maybe some beans or more tomatoes would have been nice on the full English but that’s just personal preference! Again all well cooked and fresh tasting . Staff friendly and helpful . Only niggles- TV only showed a couple of channels but enough to chill after all that food! Lots of door banging but that’s people not the accommodation!…
