We (family with triplets aged 10) spent two nights at the Arenal Montechiari. The little lodges are a decent size with refrigerators and comfortable beds. There are bed side lamps in the rooms now so those concerned about the strip lighting comments needn’t worry!

The gardens are beautifully planted with lots of colourful flowers; it’s a lovely place to hang out. Others had mentioned that the pool isn’t heated but it was warm enough for that not to matter. Our daughters spent hours in there.

The restaurant only serves breakfast. It was the standard fayre with lots of fresh fruit, fresh eggs, rice/beans mix, etc. It’s an easy ten minute walk into town for lunch/dinner where there are lots of options. We had a good meal at La Fonda 506.

There’s a lot to do the the area. Cannot recommend Ecoglide zip wiring highly enough (see separate review). It was epic!!!! Also enjoyed our walk up the volcano and an evening at the hot springs.

We had a beautiful stay here during our recent Costa Rica visit. The property is well maintained with a rustic design. The room that was given to us at first had a odd odor maybe due to the heavy downpour. We tried to ignore it at first by keeping the door open thinking it will pass. But when it didn’t we went to the office and they promptly shift us to another room on the other side.
You can see the volcano from the property. The morning walks are beautiful with an opportunity to see so many birds large and small. Wifi only available in the office area and the dining area. We didn’t mind that since it was time to take a break from the smart gadgets.
Only criticism would be the breakfast which was basic and blend. We found bugs cooked inside our pancakes. But the La Fortuna downtown only ten min walk with plenty of food options and stores. There was couple of convenient stores five min away as well from where we got our daily water bottle. Overall, very nice place with friendly and helpful stuff.
The house keeping made cute animals with the towels and put fresh flowers. Please tip them generously.

Review from a travel expert of 25 years with previous experience as a hotel sales manager in Calgary. This property offers good value for what we paid, I booked like anyone else (not an agent rate or anything) for 4nts. I have backpacked in past to site inspected or stayed in luxury so I am very fair when I review. We were able to access room earlier which was nice, but 2 staff members failed to mention you have the same spa services that me and a friend did twice in town and you lost revenue because of that Property is good location as if you are central in Fortuna I think it would be noisy. Pool area clean and nice, grounds well looked after. Considering it's 2024 not having wifi in rooms is not acceptable because technology exists so everyone is sitting at front office. Considering the property is not huge you need to figure this out. The actual rooms look ok but please invest on some updates, the yellow bedspreads and curtains would make a difference if you did some whites. Beds are an issue, terrible. I saw how busy you are and have tour groups and your age group is 60+ so people need a proper mattress. The second green sidewalk kind of dates the property, I would paint that a light shade. Sinks and toilet dated but would be ok. Our room had a huge gap under door so critters could easily get in...luckily none. Tv had good movies, fridge worked, air conditioning good. North American clientele also like coffee makers and providing 2 bottles of water would rank you better. Making these small adjustments would validate you to charge a bit more and rank you higher with reviews. Breakfast was ok, great for your tour groups leaving in am.
Do some soft updates on rooms with mattresses, linens curtains
Get wifi in rooms
I see so much potential here and I love Costa Rica so much, I'd be happy to somehow help resource bedding connections or something even work for free to reno a few things LOL for now fair 2.5/3 star

Stayed here two nights on an Exodus trip. The hotel is close to the centre of town (easily walkable to bars and restaurants) but in a quiet area. Staff were lovely and the cleaner folds your towel into creative shapes (see photo) The rooms are clean but very basic, there’s no Wi-Fi unless you’re sitting in reception and no bar at the hotel (but lots within 10 mins walk). Each room is in an individual cabin with a verandah, set around beautiful tropical gardens filled with exotic flowers and colourful birds. There’s a small unheated pool. Each morning there is bird feeding at breakfast so it’s a paradise for birders. Breakfast is good. I wouldn’t want to spend more than two nights here as the room interior is wood panelled and dark (there are large windows but they give no privacy so your choice is to keep curtains drawn or sit in a goldfish bowl) and the plumbing a little temperamental, but for a couple of nights on a tour it was a good choice. There is aircon but I didn’t need to use it.

All I can say is this is all about the exterior and very much sheer ignorance on the interior. Awful cabins. Extremely basic although air con is available. The bathroom door doesn't close properly and the 'windows' in there are plastic slats that don't close so you need to keep the bathroom door closed to stop the creepy crawlies from getting in. The beds are like rocks and you can hear everything in the huts next door and beyond. Didn't try the pool here as didn't get the chance. On arrival I was given a key and when I opened the door the room hadn't been made up. The bed was unmade and there were plates of food everywhere. I was then allocated a different room and thankfully it was ready but awful. The lighting is so poor you can't see to do anything. To plug in the fridge you have to pull it out of its cubby hole completely to get the plug into the socket and then it makes so much racket you have to do the same to unplug it for the night or you'll never sleep. There is no wifi in the rooms only in reception which was very annoying. Breakfast was seriously lacking to the point I didn't even bother one morning. For the prices they charge this place was shockingly bad. It does seem that Costa Rica just has awful accommodation full stop. Also you have to fill your own bottle with water from the tap outside reception and it's not that cold. It's around a half mile walk into town too with two supermarkets on the other side of the road that are a little closer.

Gorgeous hotel, far enough out from the town to avoid there hustle and bustle but only a 10 minute straight walk to the town. Lots to see and do. Town has a really good vibe with lots of restaurants, tourist shops and tourist info places. Hotel was really nice, individual cabins, beautiful gardens and pool. Nice clean and spacious. Nice big shower. Safe,Fridge and TV. Breakfast was small and not very well set up when busy but lots of choice, omelettes, pancakes, fruit, bread, cooked sausages and rice. Lots of wildlife and flowers in the gardens. Lovely place.

Located just outside the town of La Fortuna, easily walkable in about 10 mins along one straight road. The complex is quite small with only a few lodges and even though they were not attached the noise easily carried from one to the other. There is air con but ours wasn't very good. The breakfast was basic but OK. Only saw a couple of staff members as only stayed 2 nights so can't really comment in the service. The pool isn't very big and not alot of seating area around it but we was there for the tours so didn't use it. Overall a fairly nice place with no complaints just a bit basic

Visited as part of a tour. The hotel is quite compact but has beautiful flower- filled gardens. Saw quite a few birds here including on the stream at the entrance to the hotel. Cabins were fine. Surprisingly it didn't have a restaurant or bar which was open. This was not really a problem as it is ten minutes walk from La Fortuna, which is a pleasant small touristy town with lots of restaurants and feels quite safe even at night. There is not really much to do around the hotel and unlike others we visited there are no walking trails. It is essentially used as an access point for the national park ( by vehicle as it is quite few miles away). The park is extremely beautiful with various trails although I was slightly disappointed to see far fewer birds then other locations in Costa Rica- however coatis are plentiful and not shy. In summary a nice enough but unexceptional town hotel.

We stayed 2 nights at this small cabin lodge hotel while visiting Costa Rica. The good The cabins are beautiful very clean, the grounds are beautiful and the pool was amazing. Cabin was a good size. Staff wAs great and informative about the activities…but

Not so good was cabin walls are thin, not well lit at night, but the biggest down fall was not having WiFi in the cabins and you can only get WiFi at the reception area, (we could not get it at the restaurant. This was highly inconvenient.. also beds were very uncomfortable..

Does this hotel have Verizon cell phone signal? Also, is their Wi-Fi in the rooms?
Answer from brad petaluma
Petaluma, California64 contributions40 helpful votes
Verizon may piggyback on the local carrier signals down there, but there are no Verizon stores or advertising in La Fortuna. The wifi signal works best in the office and the open air breakfast area which is open 24 hours but only serves breakfast. It is cheaper to buy a disposable smart phone or sim chip, than getting international service for most major carriers.
