Very enjoyable two night stop at this characterful hotel. We bought a breakfast and dinner package and rated them both very good. Wine is on the expensive side but we were a captive audience! Loved the decoration - very individual and nothing like the chain hotels. Our friends had a very big room with a balcony whilst ours was rather smaller but comfortable. Only downside was the traffic noise from the adjacent A12. Has been commented before but you can only identify the hotel sign from the road when you are on top of it. Would visit again when in the area.

This hotel refers to itself as a boutique hotel, I have never quite understood that term but lets call it on the "shabby chic" side of things. The room we had was very clean and comfortable. The mini bar prices were on the high side and the room notes refer to a "complimentary bottle of tap water is provided" really!! The food was very good however, the sea bass was a little on the dry side but overall the food dinner and breakfast was very good. The hotel has two dinning rooms one for dinner and one for breakfast, this seems to be a waste as the bar area is very small and forms part of the dinner dining area. If the breakfast room was turned into a lounge it would become somewhere to relax in and enjoy tea, coffee and an after dinner drink. A log fire would also add to the staying experience in the winter/Christmas. After dinner the bar was less than welcoming and the only member of staff was servicing dinner so a long wait for a drink would have been on the cards. Again it wasn't very welcoming. Would I stay here again or recommend it... I don't think so. Sorry.

Finding the hotel is interesting - the Satnav stops on a bend on the A12 and there is a small white sign with SH on it. If you miss this you will never find the tiny turning to the hotel. The hotel is boutique, in a house once owned by Charles Dickens and elaborately decorated. Four-poster beds are fine if they don't creak and you don't want to watch TV. Otherwise, the room was well equipped with a fridge and minibar, but not many power points. The bath took an age to fill but there was a nice mirror for shaving. A very heavy warm duvet was provided, which we had to have changed for a lighter one with no problem. Breakfast had to be ordered in advance but was substantial and excellent. We were not so keen on dinner and the wine list was the least informative I have ever seen - Merlot £27, etc.

Don't be put off by the older pics of a pink decor. Cara and Andy have changed this to a very modern but totally in keeping with an old county house vibe, interesting and pleasant ambiance. I've copied below to save you looking it up as this really does sum up our stay......... Where did the Satis House get its name? The word "satis" comes from the Latin word for "enough," and the house must have been given its name as a blessing or as a premonition that its residents would be satisfied with the lives they led between its walls. We Stayed at Satis house for a night before we went on to our sons wedding, on the dinner B & B offer. Dinner in Rocco's Restaurant was a very high standard, My Prawn starter was unusual and very tasty, just what a starter should be. We all ordered the Rib eye and each one was cooked as ordered, a rare thing even in the best places?! Breakfast was good too, freshly cooked and hot with warm plates. We stayed in the Orangery (one of four dog friendly rooms) It was a lovely large ground floor room with a very comfy bed. The address as suggests is on a main road, we were surprised though how quiet it was and we both had a very good nights sleep. There is a nice circular walk out of the side gate into the village. By the shop there is a signed foot path that takes you across the parkland of Cockfield Hall and back round onto wide highway footpath back to Satis house entrance. Charles Dickens wrote some of Great Expectations at satis house, a copy of the manuscript is available to look at on request, the original is in a museum. We will defiantly stay here again when next in the area, a real Gem. Thank you Cara, Andy and Delilah for making our stay extra special xx
