We have been coming to the Algonquin Hotel since 1975 or earlier and it is always with anticipation and high hopes. I know COVID has played a huge part in the past couple of years in terms of staffing etc… so we are willing to forgive certain changes/ disappointments. But I do hope that the next time we visit for lunch or for an annniverssry dinner or stay at the hotel that we will have something to rave about as we have had in the past. The seafood chowder has always been a standout until recently. Todays was very disappointing. Our guests from away were underwhelmed. Not the lunch we had been hoping for. I am sure things can be improved so good luck.

We were on our way to PEI and only stayed here one night, but our experience was so good that we are planning a return trip. First of all, I don't sleep well, but I had the best night's sleep I've had in a long time here. The bed is fabulously comfortable and the room was nice and dark at night. The island is small so it is very very quiet. I was concerned at first that I would hear dogs barking as everyone there seemed to have a dog but us. But, no barking, thankfully! The property is gorgeous and well maintained. Yes, it's an old property, but well cared for. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We had dinner and breakfast and both meals were incredible. I have no complaints at all. I can't wait to return!

The hotel is short handed so food options are really limited. 5 entree choices at dinner; 2 steak, 2 vegetarian & 1 seafood Salmon. We are on the ocean but no lobster, scallops, clams or oysters? Breakfast buffet ok but so many guests items kept running out plus on Saturday no tables with an over 30 minute wait. Saturday evening dinner specials was a hamburger! Bar does not open until noon so no Mimosas or Bloody Mary’s with breakfast & they don’t have tomato juice only Clamato (yuck). You can’t take a can of beer to be enjoyed later in your room, they have to open it. We had a bunch of drink coupons but didn’t even get to use half of them. Only bubbly by the glass was Prosecco, the champagne bottles were very expensive. Too many combinations in the entrée & dessert choices, keep it simple & have more variety. No baked potatoes, salad dressing was ranch or green goddess, no bleu, French, Italian or Thousand Island. The pub was closed & restaurant at the golf course as well & no lunch service. There are plenty of outdoor amenities - pool, tennis, bicycles & indoor pool & gym. No organized classes such as yoga which was advertised. If they can’t hire enough people once the college kids go back to school & kitchen staff leave for winter jobs then just close. We had a junior suite but no patio or balcony. We paid over $1,200 USD for this not even worth half that. One elevator & it doesn’t go to lower level to get to spa. There are many Inns in St Andrews offering meals, we will go elsewhere next time. Oh & no special notice for our anniversary or Marriott level.

People including myself flock to this hotel due to its history. Other than that, the hotel needs some major up grades. The carpet is old with lots of spots. Lots of dents and chips on hallways, doors and furniture. The hotel staff however are super friendly and helpful. For example, a maintenance person came up quickly to remove a thick layer of dust collected in a ventilation outlet, which obviously had not been cleaned for many years, leading to impaired airflow. As well, a staff came up late at night to change the bedsheets on which some body and nose hair was found. Overall the service is impeccable but the hardware is overdue for an upgrade.

My husband and I returned to celebrate our 30th anniversary after a wonderful stay in July. Our experience could not have been more different. Our stay in July was booked via points and we had a queen room with a lovely bathroom and large fridge. I reserved what I thought was the same room for this trip. We were barely acknowledged as gold member at the check-in desk. We were lead to a tiny room that was absolutely filthy - stained carpets, sticky desk and very dark. We called and they changed our room to across the hall which was just okay. The room was nothing like our summer room (albeit the same description). The bed was a double which they are calling a "European Queen" - not the same as this summer - with a bathroom that would be too small for a child. A tiny pedestal sink with no counter for toiletries and an outlet hidden behind the towel rack. We could literally barely move in the space. No cleaning service for three days - until we called the front desk and waited two hours for toilet paper and new paper cups for the coffee machine. We were so disappointed. The internet was spotty at best and generally we experience upgraded internet. I think the "resort" needs to determine if they are a resort or a banquet and conference center. That is where there attention was recently while other couples or families celebrating were left behind. And - please - price these tiny rooms properly - we didn't receive what we had booked. If the resort relies on students to staff the property, close to guests at the end of August. And - end the resort fee after August - one fire pit (while the other is reserved for a wedding) and an indoor pool are standard fare at any Hampton Inn - not resort amenities. We feel like we really got taken for the over $1000 we spent (and that was not eating at the hotel)! It makes us sad as we did have a lovely summer holiday, but we are not sure when we might return.

Returning guests pay us the greatest compliment, and we are pleased that you chose to celebrate your anniversary with us. That said, we regret that this experience did not live up to your expectations. This is not indicative of the quality we strive to provide, as you have experienced before, and know that we will speak with our housekeeping team to remedy the issues you encountered in your room. Given the opportunity, we would like to provide you with the stay that we know we are capable of and one that will exceed all of your expectations. Sincerely, Nicolas Messian General Manager

So when you pay a lot of money as well as having a 3 night minimum stay at a hotel you have certain expectations, this hotel is not very good. Things I liked Bathrooms were small but modern with a walkin showerr Things i was disappointed with no luggage rack in the room room has shampoo, conditioner and body wash in bulk containers, two of which were empty no bags for ice bucket, had to go find them no coffee cups in room for coffee maker house keeping did not provide fresh glasses but instead just left the dity glasses on the desk booked and paid for a water view, what i got was a room facing the water but has a roof in front of it. you can see a bit of water on either side but is more of a partial water view. Room 471 breakfast servive was not great. had to ask several times for coffee, cutlery and new plates for the buffet…it was not busy. all in all a very disappointing stay, will not be back

We reserved for the play and stay. The bar while empty refused to seat us and said we could sit in the general area if we wanted to order food. The lack of staff meant that other food areas could not be serviced. So we went in town for food . The next day we had the breakfast buffet Not the best, coolish and run of the mill food and all of that for $25 per person It is a beautiful facility but the amenities were lacking at $630 for the package we did not expect to have to leave the facility to get supper!!!!!!

I am disgusted with this hotel and the way it is being run since Marriott purchased it from Fairmont. It is very run down and in desperate need of refurbishment. Things mentioned in their brochure are not actually offered anymore. You are not told until you ask for them. The rooms, at least in the main building are old, worn out, and rarely cleaned. We had stained bedding, worn sheets, burn marks on the carpet, broken mirror, marked furniture, stains on the walls, vents that hadn’t been cleaned for a very long time, and the mattresses were like something you would get from Goodwill all old and stained. We stayed here for a week and had to ask for toilet paper, clean towels, and were told Kleenex was not available. The cleaning staff seemed surprised if you asked to have fresh towels or your rooms made up. No one ever showed up to make the bed or clean anything while we were there. In fact I never heard a vacuum being used once the entire time. Don’t get me wrong the staff, the permanent ones at least, are very friendly and accommodating, but the hotel owners seem to have left them on their own and without the necessary knowledge to run this large hotel. For example we booked this hotel as a present for our mother who is turning 90. We were hoping to make this a very special trip full of lovely family memories. Instead we had nightmare after nightmare, day after day for our entire stay. It is supposed to be a 4 maybe 5 star hotel but is a 1 to 2 star at best. Funny though they are still charging the higher prices even though they do not measure up anymore. For a special treat I booked my mother a few special days at the their spa only to find it is not accessible to anyone but the able bodied. To get her to her appointments we had to find a hotel staff member to take us into the staff elevator down to the lower levels of the kitchens and walk her the entire length of the hotel to get there. She was in pain by the time she reached the spa. Horrible experience and a very greasy and dirty one at that. Keep in mind she was booked for two visits so this had to happen twice. How can you have a hotel that says it is top range yet is inaccessible to anyone but the able bodied. One day we arrived back at the hotel to find their one and only elevator out of commission. My mother’s room was on the top floor, she was feeling tired and needed her medicine, and wanted to take a nap. When we spoke to the front desk they said they would have to call someone out and had no idea how long it would be. I was then told my mother could sit in the lobby and wait. I was not happy with that answer and asked for a timeline for the elevator to be fixed. After constant chasing a young manager came and told us the man that would fix it lived 3 hours away and then would not know how long, or if, he would be able to fix it. I got rather angry with them expecting a 90 year old woman to sit in the lobby for well over 4 or 5 hours waiting to get to her room. Finally a lovely young woman came to me and said they could take us up in yet another staff elevator that was, yes you guessed it, the full length of the hotel and back. We did eventually get her to her room but again she was in a lot of pain from the long hike. This mess of a trip didn’t end there. Once we got upstairs I found that a large wedding had been booked into the hotel for that evening and when I climbed up the stairs found a beer can at the top with loud music coming from the hallway. Once I got to our room it seemed the lovely wedding guests booked in across the hall had decided the entire top floor was their personal party space and had the doors propped open and music on. I had finally hit my last straw and asked them to at least shut their doo to which I was told to go away. I went straight downstairs to the front desk to get them to do something about this selfish and obnoxious group who seemed to think they had rented the entire hotel. I was met with comments like “well it is a wedding” and “they have booked the rooftop reception patio”. I then explained that was great but they were actually partying in their room and the hallway and that if it continues they will also be paying for both of our rooms. All the staff did was ask them to close their door. If this had been the Fairmont they would have been told to move the party to the room that was rented for that purpose and that under no circumstances would it be tolerated in the guest rooms. This hotel has lost the idea of what real standards are and seem to accept any behaviour as long as the person or group is paying money. Our family paid a lot to stay at this hotel and it was a holiday that will probably never happen again due to our mother’s age. What should have been a chance for wonderful family memories ended up being a nightmare of pain, over priced dirty rooms, over priced very average food, rowdy guests, and over worked young staff. I will never stay at a Marriott again and will never recommend them. We actually stayed at a 2 star Quality Inn on our way home in Levi’s Quebec and found it a world above the Algonquin. It was immaculate, had very large rooms, beds were new and comfortable, and a full cooked breakfast was included in the price which was less than half of what we paid per night at the Algonquin. Also it was sound proof so we all slept very well. The Marriott could learn a lot from that Quality Inn and they should before they completely destroy that historic hotel.

Spent two nights here while checking out St. Andrews and visiting the area. This is a very historic property and it does tend to show it's age, and such, it is hard pressed to be rated over 4 stars. The grounds and the hotel itself are massive. Check in can be a little confusing especially if you get there when a large group happens to be checking in (nice touch with the greet black Lab though) We had a king room. it is nothing special and the decor could use an update. The washroom is very tight. The bed was comfortable but you may want to use your own pillow. Within walking distance to most everything but be aware that the walk back to the Inn from Water Street where all the "action" is, can be daunting to to the Inn being up on a fairly steep hill. If you like history, check it out. If you are looking for 4-5 star rooms, you will not find them here.
