Attended as a family group for an evening celebration meal- so no overnight accommodation. Menu was full of variety and met the expectations of three generations, service was very attentive and food delicious. The restaurant has an excellent atmosphere and having visited here for 30 years we felt it was getting back to the excellence that has characterised it in the past.

My sister & husband recently had a poor experience with the lunch voucher that we gave them for a special anniversary. However I have now spoken with very new Manager Ryan (only joined them this week) who assured me that he was putting things right and we have agreed to revisit in a few weeks time. I was impressed with his attitude. Mike

Awful Hotel is shabby and very tired our superior room appeared like it had not been updated in anyway since the 80’s. Our room with a view had net curtains which when opened gave full view for people to look in at their waist height from the pathway outside. The bathroom was horrible with a broken bath panel and stains around the sealant. We said we didn’t want that room but they had no other than something worse so we opted for a discount.it wasn’t what we expected from their advertising and we were very disappointed. The food was dire ! A tiny tiny fish cake ( cold) and hot Brie ( cold) which we sent back and they were returned still only barely warm.the main courses - a pie and fish a chips were equally awful and the service was so bad as they didn’t have enough staff. The breakfast was also a struggle for them coming from a catering background the food was down market and the kitchen staff didn’t offer the buffet food in a timely manner. Outside the gardens were full of weeds and the bins not emptied and overflowing and we noticed that the following morning the drinks glasses from the night before were still on the tables. This hotel is very tired and very understaffed. We would never return and this one night was a very bad experience.

The location in the heart of Dovedale in the National Park is breathtaking. beautiful views all around. The guest facing hotel staff and mostly cheerful and helpful however the kitchen staff are not very accommodating. One evening we just wanted soup and a sandwich which was on the lunch menu but as the lunch menu ceased serving at 6 pm and it was 7 pm the kitchen refused to provide it. I can understand this in a pub but to refuse to serve hotel residents with a snack in the evening is very poor. We had to drive out some miles to find something suitable. Even the bar staff seemed annoyed by the kitchen over this. Our room was a large superior double. It was clean but could do with a refurb as the furnishings were rather tired. The bathroom had been refurbed fairly recently, again it was clean but rather basic for such a large room, it could have had a walk in shower rather than an over the bath one. Due to COVID there’s was no room cleaning during our three day stay. The hotel stuck firmly to COVID guidelines. Breakfasts were good but the scrambled eggs were not very pleasant to look at...rather grey. Finally there was a rather strange incident one night. We were woken at 3am by a group of men talking loudly in a foreign language outside our window. This went on for twenty or more minutes. Apparently they had arrived to stay in the early hours and were annoyed at not being allowed in. This was not the fault of the hotel but maybe the police should have been called.
