If you have ever driven past large country farm houses with horses in the fields and wondered what it would be like to stay in one, well I can tell you. It's fabulous. We stayed at Shirley Hall Farm on B&B basis and found the whole experience delightful from the moment we where greeted by Ruth. The farm is just...

Everything was just right, the beds were so comfortable and in such a huge room we felt we had room to sit and catch up without feeling we were cramped in a bedroom. Ruth gave us really helpful advise and two delicious breakfasts. No hesitation in recommending a stay in her home.

We stayed only one night unfortunately, in July, and wished we could have stayed longer. Fascinating history to the house, beautiful, enormous bedroom with gorgeous antique furniture - the wardrobe is superb! - and comfortable bed with beamed wall, dressing table, lounge chairs, you name it! Lovely views over the fields with horses, and lovely garden. Ruth was away but...

Very reasonably priced B&B. Three of us shared two very spacious en-suite rooms. The farmhouse is very characterful, and dates from the sixteenth century though parts are believed to be much older, so it is steeped in history. It is set in lovely countryside and a very beautiful tranquil garden. Very nice views to wake up to. It is within...

Just stayed here at the weekend as we were attending a charity event nearby! So glad that I found this lovely B&B, the rooms were reasonably priced and included a fantastic breakfast that set us up for the days 10k assault course! The building is a lovely old farmhouse that is still in use and is set in the lovely...

Splendid place. With a history going back to the Crusades (1100s or so) and before. The local pub in Shirley Village, provides a reminder—Saracen's Head. Crusaders did a good bit of carnage of course. Saracens were on the receiving end—but not always. I looked for a 'Crusader's Head' pub, but was unsuccessful. ...All the English wars and conflicts—domestic, foreign and...

We had a brief, but lovely stay at Shirley Hall Farm last week. The house is from the Tudor period, set in lovely grounds with rolling hills & frams animals all round. The farm is only 5 mins drive from Ashbourne. We were welcomed on arrival by a bouncing Dalmatian, and then by Ruth the owner. We only stayed for...

There is no point in my duplicating the review by Bernard S. I confirm everything he writes. We were delighted with our stay and our hosts were very welcoming. It is the oldest room we have even slept in! I'd also confirm that dining at the Saracen's Head was excellent - so good to be able to stroll out to one's...

The three things that make Ruth Crabtree and her family's Shirley Hall Farm a standout among the B&B's we experienced in five weeks in England are: 1. WARM HOSPITALITY 2. A SPACIOUS ROOM 3. MAGICAL AMBIANCE Ruth's care and attention - and her customised breakfasts - make you feel welcome and very much at home. She even enlisted her mum's...

“Its a small family run B&B both rooms are excellent, don't expect a swish hotel, its an historic farmhouse with a Jacobean staircase and beamed walls and ceilings, antique rugs, bookcases and faded photos and old paintings on the walls.”
