Nestled in a prime location with breathtaking views, Avon Gorge by Hotel du Vin delivers a mixed experience to its guests. While the terrace vistas, comfortable beds, and powerful showers are highlights, many guests have issues with the poorly lit, gloomy rooms and occasional lapses in cleanliness. Despite the modern amenities, some feel the hotel does not provide value for money, citing overpricing and extra charges. The service quality also varies, with reports of both commendable and disappointing interactions. The atmosphere of the hotel is often considered dark and dreary, detracting from its charm.

I booked this hotel only a couple of days prior to arrival, I chose to go for this hotel instead of their hotel in the centre of Bristol to be a bit further away from the center.

The hotel is very nice, it does feel more premium than the price I paid. I opted for a superior room which was slightly bigger which was a very nice room indeed, we also had views of Clifton Suspension Bridge which was nice.

The room was as you would expect and had everything that we needed. The bathroom facilities were great, we really loved how the room was decorated and the monsoon shower was a welcome feature.

We paid a bit extra for breakfast on top of the room rate and the options were great. They had everything that you would want and the fried breakfast was very good!

We did try to get in for dinner but the restaurant was fully booked which prompted us to get out and about more which we preferred. The Ivy a few minute walk away from the hotel and it was excellent, there also some pubs close by and some other restaurants.

There is the White Lion put next door which I think doubles up as the hotel's outdoor bar (I'm not sure, we did want to go because there was a lovely roof terrace but couldn't get in as there were queues outside). it was slightly disappointing that the hotel bar was closed and they don't have a designated outdoor area for guests to enjoy a drink.

The hotel isn't far from the center of Bristol - we used Uber a few times to get back to the hotel and into the city. We did also walk to Bristol Cathedral which took around 25 minutes. It's a nice location with easy access to the center.

Overall, we had a great stay and Avon Gorge is my preferred option for the next time we visit Bristol.

Hi Thank you for such a detailed feedback. I am really please to learn that your stay was good and you have enjoyed every bit of it. I have noticed that you mentioned in your feedback about our WLB Pub and the hotel bar. Due to COVID we currently only have on bar opened. When you do visit us again please do not queue to get into the White Lion Pub as the hotel guests can get an access to the pub from inside and you don't have to wait in the queue outside. Kind Regards Deputy General Manager

Myself and my son had a room each for 1 night while visiting Bristol to check out the city before he starts to study there. The hotel is extremely dark inside reception and corridors and the rooms which I personally find mind but some people might. As expected in old building and this chain there are long narrow rabbit warrens of corridors with level changes. The rooms themselves were nicely decorated in the brand style. The dining room has a stunning view of the clifton suspension bridge and the food was good and in eotho very good value, breakfast was also pretty well organized but not ideal with large groups having to queue to get cold breakfast items right at the entrance to the dining room. Parking is a bit hit and miss as it's on public roads and you have to be prepared to circle around for a spot and squeeze your car in. Also you need to first pickup and then also return the permit

Hi, Thank you very much for your feedback. I certainly agree that the rooms could do with a bit more lights. This has been addressed and we are looking at options on how we can make it a bit brighter without spoiling the ambiance. Parking in Clifton can be challenging as there are very limited spaces for the public. Kind Regards

Got this hotel on a great deal booking direct , the price has gone up since so can only review on what I paid and service received.
Stunning location right on the gorge next to the bridge would be fantastic in summer as the restraint over looks the area .
Nice big room clean tidy . Excellent breakfast . Parking limited but available at £6 but plenty on street .
Opt out of room clean receive free drink each night , can’t complain at that pub attached does food . Had a great pizza one night but had to send 2 meals back one night but got refunded so can’t say they didn’t try although a free meal or something the next night might have been a nice gesture .. close to town plenty food an drink available , recommend Nutmeg Indian excellent food you will have a nice surprise not your usual run of the mill Indian restaurant .
Overall an excellent stay and wouldn’t hesitate to go back if I got the same deal

4 of us went for afternoon tea before Christmas and we were SO disappointed. We had pre-booked but when we arrived we were seated and then forgotten about, they didn't even take our coats. After chasing we finally got our afternoon tea 45 minutes later, the sandwiches were dry and hardly had any filling in them, the cakes looked like they came out of a packet and some of them were horrid and I am not fussy!! The crockery was unattractive and clumsy. When the waitress put the plates down she moved my teacup over to the other side of the table where I couldn't reach it. We were then abandoned again. We had to ask for more tea, I had a herbal tea but I wasn't asked, we just got another great pot of breakfast tea dumped on the table. We complained and did not pay but they still charged us full price for the glass of champagne each that we had. The worse thing was that when we tried to contact them afterwards to give feedback we got no response to the email we sent. One of our party managed eventually to find another email address and did get a response and we've been offered a free afternoon tea so we will give it another chance - I'm really interested to see what happens! Will post an update which I hope is more positive!

We booked what we thought would be a special treat for Boxing Day lunch in the hotel restaurant. We have dined here before so assumed it would be the same usual standard, however we were sadly disappointed and won't be returning. On arrival there was no one there to greet us, servers were sat around folding napkins and no one took our coats. When I asked if I could hang my long winter coat rather than draping it on the floor from the back of my chair I had to go and hang it myself rather than having someone take it. Our starters were fine but the mains were sorely underwhelming. Firstly, I was told the chicken wasn't on the bone, ordered it and was then told it was. The Yorkshire puddings were so over cooked they shattered when touched by cutlery, there were no pigs in blankets and the gravy was watery and almost non existent. I asked for gravy for the table and was given a tiny ration in a pot. My Father ordered the lamb which came with a hair in it and when he complained the server chastised him for not saying anything earlier. Despite the restaurant being empty there was no check back throughout the meal so there wasn't an opportunity to complain earlier. I had the chocolate yule log as dessert which had clearly been frozen and not taken out in time for it to reach room temperature. My Father ordered a cortado coffee to accompany dessert and was given an espresso with a jug of cold milk. When he sent it back, this time complaining as soon as it happened, they gave him a latte. None of these incidents on their own would be enough to cause a complaint but combining them all, along with the staff's utter indifference, adds up to a thoroughly disappointing experience and an overpriced one at that.

What a waste of money. I found the staff mostly rude and unhelpful, the food terrible quality and the general service awful. The only redeeming factor was that the actual room was quite nice.

Some examples of issues

- ordered a rump steak at the dinner menu. A minute steak arrived. A minute steak!!!
- stayed for 2 nights. No automatic room cleaning. Wasn’t told this upon check in, I phoned down when we had returned from a day in Bristol to be told that we had to request this. When it was eventually cleaned, the milk for the morning coffee was replaced with soya milk. Are you kidding?
- Breakfast? Don’t bother. Slow, terrible quality, measly portions. On the second morning we walked five minutes to Primrose Cafe in Clifton Village which was half the price and a hundred times better.

I’m used to paying good money for good hotels, and generally know what to expect at different price points. This failed miserably and I would never stay again.

Recently visited this hotel with my wife for a Sunday one night stay. Treated ourselves to the top package of Laurent Perrier Suite with three course dinner and breakfast included. Yes, parking is restricted in the area around the hotel so maybe this is the only negative. We ourselves, decided to find a ‘park on my drive ‘ which was roughly a 15 minute walk back to the hotel. It came to £8.50, we first left our bags at reception, parked the car and returned. Staff at the hotel throughout our stay were so helpful and friendly. Obviously in these Covid times, every part of the hotel you enter is hand sanitizers and app scanning, they are hot on social distancing and safety. The suite was beautiful with an unbelievable view of the Suspension Bridge. If you want to push the boat out a bit I would recommend it 100%. Dinner was gorgeous with great service. Breakfast too, despite ordering it to your table instead of a buffet, it was plentiful and delicious with great service again. The restaurant view is also breathtaking of the Gorge and bridge. We also had a cocktail in the residents bar served by a super helpful guy for whom nothing was too much trouble. Clifton itself is a fascinating and beautiful neighbourhood high up on top of the Avon Gorge with the historical Brunel bridge its centrepiece along with The Downs and nearby Zoo. City centre isn’t that far either, but be prepared for very steep streets ! Overall, beautiful hotel, great staff and great views. Would visit again in a flash !

We have stayed in several Hotel Du Vin Hotels and always found them pretty good. This one is the exception. How the reviews are so good puzzles us.
The whole hotel has a shabby, grubby and uninviting feel. The carpet on the stairs was dirty and the corridor on floor 3 had a damp smell.
The first room we were offered (Superior) on floor 4 had metal grids on the window sills to stop birds from landing. They howled as the wind blew through them and the noise of the wind so high up and overlooking the gorge was terrible. We asked to be moved and the staff were very obliging and showed us to a room (standard, the only room left) on floor 3. It was a postage stamp but quiet so we accepted the compromise.
The bar is dirty and uninviting. The breakfast was ok.
Parking was an issue. The hotel offers residents passes but had ran out of these by the afternoon. We were able to park in the back lane at a charge of £6 per night.
We would definitely not stay at this Hotel du Vin again. We were extremely disappointed.

Extortionately priced room in an average hotel. We paid £370 for one night in a room on a Saturday night expecting something special, or at least a large high quality room with a nice outlook. We were shocked to find a very small, poky dark room (dark blue walls) with restricted view out of the dirty window. There was hardly enough space to walk around the bed or for two people to move around the room at once. There was a lot of noise from adjoining rooms - im not sure if we were next to a staff or store room but you could hear people talking and things banging about early in the morning. Housekeeping knocked and shouted through the door at half 9 despite checkout being at 11.. Breakfast wasn't even included at this price. Check in/out was slow - there always seemed to be a queue whenever we passed. We arrived at 240 (check in is at 3) and were asked to come back later. This is fine but there was no offer to store bags or advice on where to wait ie bar/cafe/seating areas. In general service was lacklustre and one member of staff 'welcoming' people into the bar area was very curt, again didnt wipe down a track and trace ipad and didnt bother to explain that there was an app booking system. I cannot get over the disparity between the prices charged and the hotel and service offered. From the booking sites and previous reviews I can see that for the same price people have stayed in suites so Im confused as to why the same price was charged here for what seems to be the most basic of rooms. I understand things fluctuate depending on dates and demand but this would have been laughable if it hadn't been such a disappointment. We didnt complain as we had a tight schedule and no time to address this but will vote with our feet and use a different city hotel in future.

Potential customers need to be cautious when deciding to book this hotel. The marketing material and images do not reflect the actuality. My wife and I had booked a ‘Classic Gorge View’ room and paid a premium for this choice, to discover on arrival that the view was in fact a vast expanse of flat roof with some trees in the background. It is my view that the company are responsible for allocating rooms that reflect the fee and specification selected. One invests confidence in these premium companies and don’t expect to be told the morning after, “we had other rooms”! The room itself was dark but comfortable.

We eat vegan food and the choice on the restraunt menu was soup, plant based burger and chips and sorbet. I would expect a hotel marketing itself as a premium brand to offer far more choice. The food served was nice.

£6.00 to park our car on the hotel premises is questionable?

The fire alarm went off at 4.30 am which meant ourselves and those guests who responded were stood outside in the rain with no explanation as to what was happening. Apparently a false alarm!
