We offer ten stylish bedrooms in a recently refurbished Georgian merchant’s house at the top of the city. We offer an alternative to the corporate environment of city hotels, providing a contemporary 'home away from home' feel — focusing on the highest level of comfort and care. With panoramic city views from the rear of the building and the vast expanse of Clifton Downs to the front we are ideally placed for a short stop-over or weekend city break.
We booked an impromptu overnight stay via telephone on our way through Clifton at Number 38, with the online photos appealing to us. My partner would have discerning tastes in decor/quality and the stay exceeded our expectations. Convenient street parking with a permit offered to us by the receptionist. Very friendly, warm welcome. We stayed in the West Loft Suite. Superb, opulent decor and spotlessly clean on our visit. Luxurious bath with robes, towels and complimentary bath products. Lovely little vintage radio playing classical music on our arrival to the room. Minibar available. Comfortable night's sleep. The breakfast lounge was elegantly decorated. Breakfast can be decided the night before with a completed tickbox sheet which we liked. Overall, for a last minute stay, we are super impressed and would 100% return here if ever back in Clifton.…

This hotel is fabulous. Lovely room, they really have thought of everything. Nice cookies, bottles of water, mini bar, robes and slippers. The breakfast was 10 out of 10 and the breakfast area is gorgeous. The products they use, shampoo, body lotion etc are lovely. I would honestly highly recommend this hotel and it’s location. The only downside to the whole stay was the hairdryer had cold air so took forever to dry my hair!

Good location, parking available, book a permit beforehand. Communal rooms have lovely views. Room was small and smelly, bathrooms needed a deep clean. Photos attached. Breakfast was ok, not asked if we would like another coffee or anything. Boutique luxury it is not, there are many better places to stay in Bristol, with much better client interaction, more delicious and varied breakfast and clean bathrooms.

Dear MrsBB2000 Thank you for the updated review, we are delighted to see you have removed the comment about mouldy bedding, which of course is not the case. Regarding the bathroom tiles, we will have our maintenance manager re-grout. We have 11 options of freshly cooked breakfast on our menu to choose from, including lots of veggie and vegan, and many options for continental if you prefer. We'd be happy to hear from you directly of any ideas of extra breakfast options you think we are missing? Regards Team38

We had room No. 8 which looked out on to the City Scape, which we enjoyed. The room was stylish and sophisticated. The bath was victorian style deep and big. The shower superb. The decor stunning, super comfy bed. Tea, coffee, water complimentary nice, and cookies. The mini bar well stocked, but as you anticipate a little pricey. Breakfast and service, spot on. Enjoyed it so much, we have booked to go back.

My husband and I stayed in December 2021. The hotel is so welcoming and warm. As it was Christmas season there was complimentary sherry and mince pies in the reception. The hotel upgraded our room as they were not fully booked which was such a wonderful gesture. Our room was fantastic and we loved the decor. Bathroom had a copper roll top bath which we didn't take advantage of but it was lovely to look at. Breakfast was delicious and cooked just how we asked. Customer service was excellent. We would definitely stay again and explore the area of Clifton which seemed like a great area to visit outside of central Bristol but just a bus ride away.

Stayed a night here to visit a friend who lived around the corner. Arrived late afternoon and had no trouble finding a parking spot on the busy road outside, although cutting across traffic proved a little tricky especially on leaving next morning. Entering No.38, it seemed pretty nicely put together with lots of cosy-looking armchairs and pleasant decor. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming, and got us set up with a room down a few flights of stairs from the front entrance, which was still a flight or so above the terrace with nice views across the city. We had some lovely G&Ts, served by the same receptionist, and enjoyed both the cosy armchairs and later the terrace. The setup is more like a fancy BnB than a full-blown hotel, with limited bar only open when reception is (until 8pm I think). The location is excellent though, just a short walk from the main drag with lots of dining/drinking/shopping options. The room was nicely designed and pretty cosy, if on the compact side, and we slept pretty well. Breakfast was good, served to table (by the same hard-working lady) rather than a manky buffet, and we enjoyed some very decent eggs benedicts before heading out. Would definitely consider coming back if we're ever in the area again.…

Beautiful rooms and exceptional breakfast. This is a genuine find amongst the commercial riff raff of hotels in Bristol. Stunning views over the Downs and/or the heart of Bristol City Centre. Quiet sympathetic furnishings and helpful staff. Three times now and I will be back.

Nice hotel conveniently located in Clifton. Clean and comfortable, nice breakfast. BUT.....and it's a big BUT. Our room wasn't serviced so on returning at 4 pm for a second night the wet towels were sitting in the bath and the bed wasn't made. At over £200 per night this was un-acceptable. The excuse was we didn't request it but, honestly, that should be a default not an option. We stayed in another hotel for the second night and obviously were still charged even though they failed miserably. Greedy in my opinion so I will never return.

Dear Andrew Thank you for your review, which we find really disappointing to read. In order to achieve green status from many online agencies that we work with and from our own personal goal to reduce our carbon footprint, we are required to offer the option of a room clean to each guest staying more than one night. In a bid save replacing towels or bedding unnecessarily. As you didn't request a room clean, we did not service your room. I spoke to you myself in the morning when you requested to collect extra toilet paper at which point I offered to top this up for you when serving your room if you require it, to which you replied 'we don't require it' and subsequently did not leave your room service tag out. You appeared at our reception with your bags ready to check-out of your room at 4pm that day, mentioning your towels had not been changed, therefore my colleague offered to service your room for you (out of our cleaning hours) but you refused and it appears you had planned to leave at that point regardless. We recall at this point you admitted that you had forgotten to request a room clean. As you left at 4pm, the room was used and could not be resold, therefore the room rate is chargeable (please see our terms upon booking). We are hopeful that any perspective guests will read this review and understand our position clearly. Regards Polly

Great stay but room very small. Beautiful large modern bathroom. Parking on street difficult and random. Breakfast was very good but very slow, despite having to order it the night before. Then the wrong orders kept arriving. Good location. No staff in the hotel overnight. More of a b&b.

Dear Marie Thank you for your review. We are sorry you found you room small, you booked our standard double which is the smallest of all of our rooms. On our website you can find floor plans and clear images of each room and obviously prices reflect the size of each room booked. If you are looking to return and wanting a larger room, we recommend looking at and booking our Luxury Doubles or Suites. We are also sorry that you found the parking random, we advertise as having no parking and all parking is on street with either pay and display option (£1 an hour free from 5pm - 9am) or a pre-booked permit, guest are always able to find a space outside. We can only apologise for breakfast being slow, we will raise this with our kitchen team. We hope to welcome you back in the future. With kind regards Number38!
