Getting decent accommodation at a reasonable price at the moment is a huge issue and because of this, my overnight travel away has become very limited. Chain hotels such as Premier Inn etc have hiked their prices especially in city centres up by over 50% in the last few years. So now, we all have to shop around to see if there is anything we can get which doesn't destroy our budgets. A friend of mine has been running a film festival for the last couple of years in Bristol and I was desperate to support her by going. After a painstaking search for something relatively decent under £100 per night I came across The Washington. I booked for 1 night via their website & after registering was delighted that they gave me a 10% reduction for B&B at £89. I arrived in Bristol early in the morning and the very friendly reception staff were happy to hold my bags until check in time after 3pm. The room on the 2nd floor was small, but clean. (There is no lift so you have to use the stairs). Bed was comfortable, enough space to store stuff and tea/coffee making facilities provided. A nice LCD TV as well. The bathroom again was small but had a nice shower with basin and soap provided. Very nice cooked breakfast in the morning as well. One thing I must complement on is how lovely the staff in all areas were. Nothing was too much trouble. As for location, it's in the Clifton Area of Bristol. From the main part of the city its up a very steep hill. Walking there would be an effort but on the flipside, it's all downhill back to town. Anyway there is a decent and affordable transport network near the hotel for anyone with mobility issues. In summary, I'm so pleased I found The Washington for the reasons mentioned above and I will be using them again next year but for a few nights extra as it won't break my bank account.

Dear Steve, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a generous review. We are so pleased that our prices allowed you to travel overnight again and we truly empathise with how expensive that has unfortunately become with other hotels in recent years. We are so pleased to hear you appreciated the room's facilities and that you enjoyed the breakfast as much as we do! Thank you so much for recognising the hard work of our team; we are always so happy to hear they are helping to make guests' stays even better and we will certainly be sharing your kind feedback. Thank you so much again for your lovely review, and we look forward to welcoming you back again in the future! Kind regards, Alice

The staff were very warm and friendly and a nice breakfast for a very reasonable cost. The room was clean and comfortable and i found it very peaceful during the nighttime snooze. I will be back if ever i am close by The Washington. More power to the independent accommodation. I am fully supportive of them especially through the nightmare of the last 3 years and all the unnecessary restrictions where the small businesses suffered . Thank you very much :)

I believe that I stayed in the same room that Darren B reviewed. The room was small and dark at the end of a long journey down some pretty steep stairs covered in polythene making the stairs pretty slippy and there are insufficient handrails for anyone who may be a little unsteady. I could not lock the window in my room and it was on the ground floor which made the night a little uneasy. There were unopened boxes all over the place. All of this I could put up with but the most annoying thing of all was the fact that we went to breakfast on Sunday morning only to be told that the chef hadn’t turned up so there were no hot breakfast for any of the guests in the hotel, outrageous, surely they have a contingency plan, if not they should have. No refund was offered for the lack of breakfast not even the refund of the parking fee as a gesture. On the up side all of the staff I met were very nice. I don’t give reviews normally but this experience left me with no choice. Would I stay again ? No. Would i recommend ? No.

Dear DayTrip07731876995 Thank you for taking the time to leave us your review. I am so sorry to hear that you didn't have a good experience during your recent stay with us. We are currently doing some renovation work in one of the basement rooms, so have had plastic film to protect the carpet while the workmen are coming in and out of the room. However I am sorry that this meant you did not feel safe walking down to access your room. I am reviewing the staircase and handrails in this area so thank you for bringing this to our attention. During your stay we were in the process of replacing and upgrading all of the duvets and pillows in the hotel, and due to lack of storage space this had to be done over the course of a few days meaning the hotel wasn't presented the way we would like due to the boxes of new duvets. However, I am very sorry that this gave a bad impression of the hotel, but these issues were due to improvements we have been making to the building Regarding the breakfast, we had a last minute change in the rota meaning were were unable to provide a cooked breakfast last Sunday, though we always ensure that continental breakfast is offered to every guest. The breakfast in the hotel is complimentary, so we didn't offer any refunds on this occasion as a breakfast option was still provided. However I am very sorry that we were unable to offer a cooked breakfast this day. I am pleased that you were happy with the service from our staff, and I hope you would consider staying with us on another occasion to see the improvements we are making kind regards Hannah

struggled to find parking. their back garage was full even though they did not have a full house after about a ten min wait we got a permit to park at the back of the hotel. staff really understanding and nice. gave us a key and we walked through what seemed a rabbit warren of rooms and stairs very tight. we entered the room and found lots of different types of tea (much to our joy) biscuits and sugar plus coffee. curtains did nnot corver the windows and the bathroom floor had not been cleaned in a while as well as a large amount of mould but the breakfasts were nice. wwe stayed for a total of 2 nights . would nto recommend for annyone with even a slight mobility issue very narroww corridors adn a lot of stairs

Dear guest, Many thanks for taking the time to leave your review. As a small independent business we really appreciate positive feedback as well as suggestions for improvement. We are sorry to hear you were unable to access to the parking. We try to ensure all our guests are aware in advance that our parking is limited but we understand that it can be disappointing when it is no longer available. We are very glad you found our staff helpful and that you enjoyed our complimentary hospitality tray in the room. We apologise that the cleanliness of the room wasn't up to our usual standard and we will raise the problems you experienced with our housekeeping team so we can ensure this isn't repeated for future guests. We totally understand your concerns of the layout, and please note if a guest has mobility issues we are always more than happy to offer a ground floor room if requested. Many thanks again for your feedback. Kind regards, The Washington Reception Team

a small cramped, paper thin walled room in the bowels of the hotel, with a window at ground level that didn't lock. But it was a bed for the night, generally clean. happy friendly staff. Breakfast time slot had to be booked, makes the next morning a little more stressful than need be. the food was good though.

Dear Darren, Thank you very much for sharing the feedback with us, as a local business every opinion counts. We are sorry to hear we did not get your expectations. However, I have taken your feedback very seriously and made every effort to remedy these comments about the window lock. Our maitenance team are aware and will look into it. We are sorry to hear that you felt a bit stressed about our breakfast system, however the dining room is not so big so we need to keep a track on the numbers to avoind queues. We hope you give us another chance in the future. Best wishes, Irune

Rarely leave reviews, and then only for outstandingly brilliant places or experiences, but here is the exception to the rule. We booked a family room for 2 adults and 1 child. Our first impression was that the room was very small for a family room - a double and a single bed, very little space for unpacking. Wardrobe with just a hanging rail but so shallow that the hangers couldn’t hang straight, they had to be at an angle or the door wouldn’t close. Our second impression was that the place hadn’t had a proper clean in weeks, if not months. I fully understand that this is an old building, and that such buildings can look very tired and dated (it does) but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be clean. The top part of the sash window had multiple little black spots of mould and large webs of dust on the inside. The picture rail and even the top of the telephone hadn’t been dusted in a while, and around the bath there were multiple places where the grouting was black with mould. The same in the ceiling above the shower head. On mentioning this to reception I was told that housekeeping had left for the day but they would see to it in the morning, and offered me a discount for the first nights stay. It was only when I said that if they gave me the cleaning materials I would do it myself that the receptionist said she would see to it while we were out. When we returned we could see that an effort had been made (although some large swathes of dust remained in the corners of the window) and to be fair this was hardly the receptionist’s problem. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. There are some pros to the Washington: * beds were comfy and we had a room at the back which didn’t get road noise * breakfast was good if a bit in the expensive side * staff in reception and especially in the dining room were friendly and helpful, but in most ways appeared powerless to effect much change. Problems with the way the place is managed can’t be landed at their door However, having paid in excess of £250 for a 2-night stay, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the kind of cleaning standards that exist in every other hotel we’ve ever stayed in. This fell very far below that.
