Hotel Meudon captivates a number of guests with its picturesque setting and exclusive beach, though accessibility might require a drive. While the lush gardens and beachfront are frequently acclaimed, opinions vary on other amenities and the overall atmosphere, with some guests finding it less than inviting. Room comfort is generally acknowledged, despite dated elements and occasional noise.
Cleanliness is mostly praised, but a few guests have noted exceptions. Service experiences have been mixed, and some guests question the hotel's value, pointing out high costs for food and added charges.

Amazing setting with lively gardens and a walk to the secluded beach. The staff are amazing friendly but not intrusive. They made us feel like we mattered and were beyond helpful. Hotel is clean, cosy and well appointed. We were there for our 40th wedding anniversary and they were fabulous. Great food. Great afternoon tea and cracking breakfast. Highly recommended!

We have just returned from an extended Christmas break at Mawnan Smith, Cornwall. Despite the storms we had an enjoyable and restful stay. The bedroom was very well equipped and we appreciated the excellent walk-in shower with its perfect non-slip surface. The staff were kind, helpful and did all they could to make it a memorable Christmas for us and all their guests. The Boxing Day dip from the hotel’s beach, between the storms, proved that the staff were willing to go the extra mile to entertain us.
The grounds are extensive with a number of alternative paths down to the sea. The exotic trees, ferns and flowers thrive in the local micro climate and at times we felt we were guests at Jurassic Park!
The food throughout was very good as expected but be prepared to spend on side dishes such as potatoes and other vegetables. A 10% discretionary service charge is added to all food and drink orders.
We would be very happy to return.

Hello netnoggin, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a wonderful 5 out of 5 review. We are delighted you enjoyed a wonderful Christmas stay . The whole team thoroughly enjoyed hosting each and every guest that stayed over the festivities . We are so pleased you enjoyed the Boxing Day swim , the team really did too ! It certainly felt very festive down at the bream Box and the hot chocolate and mulled wine was a great incentive to get in the sea. With so many spectators and guests taking part , it was the highlight of many people's day. Its great to know you enjoyed the festive feast too ! We have been receiving rave reviews with many guests looking to book for next year. We do hope you will join us again soon Very Best Wishes Suzannah Front of House Manager

A beautiful hotel in a stunning location with a calm and peaceful atmosphere. The grounds are stunning and the hotel itself has such character. Living locally I have been for coffee and experienced the grounds which offer the lovely little beach and some stunning walks. I was fortunate to take advantage of a ‘seasonal saver’ and it was such a wonderful deal and worth every penny. The beds/pillows were very comfortable, really nice toiletries and everyone was very attentive. The food was presented lovely (had an allowance of £30pp towards the evening meal) however I did think the food was a little overpriced for what you got. Wine also rather expensive, however the views and location made it special. Lovely breakfast too, help yourself continental with a choice of then cooked options. Thanks again for a wonderful stay and please keep this deal going as much as possible as it’s such a delight and I have since recommended it to many others xx

Not quite the paradise that the website suggests. We booked for 3 days of rest and relaxation but were very disappointed. The welcome was good, though there was no offer to help with luggage. The bedroom - not the cheapest category - was comfortable enough and adequately furnished but had no individuality and could have been in a hotel anywhere. The en-suite shower room though small was very good, however. In the evening we expected to find other guests having pre-dinner drinks but the bar and lounge were deserted, though this was perhaps hardly surprising considering how dark and gloomy the bar was, as were other public areas. The centre of the restaurant where we were seated didn't seem to be lit at all, not even a table candle. We bought drinks from the bar, carried them to a table and subsequently carried them to the restaurant. We were outraged then to see that they were subject to a service charge on our final bill which we insisted be removed. Nobody offered us a menu, or came to take our order, or to let us know when our table was ready. The food was adequate, but quite ordinary, rather like the bedroom. The side dishes were ridiculously priced at £5. During our first night the fire alarm sounded twice in the small hours. False alarms both times, but very upsetting just the same, and there was no explanation or apology the following day. There went our restful weekend. Breakfast, like dinner was a disappointment. For people like us who don't want a cooked breakfast the 'continental' offering was especially poor. Only one type of pastry - croissants - and only one type of jam - strawberry inevitably. No ham or cheese or anything even vaguely resembling a proper choice. The tea and coffee smelled and tasted strongly of chlorine. Clearly the tap water needs to be filtered for making drinks. It is true that the hillside location of the hotel and the sub-tropical gardens are very attractive, but this cannot make up for the hotel's shortcomings. The walk down to the beach and coast path is very pleasant but the beach cafe (owned by the hotel?) and promoted by the staff was resolutely closed even though it was the weekend. Anyone who has read this far will not be surprised to know that we could not bear another night and we abandoned our stay a day early even though it meant we lost money. Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention the buckets catching water leaking through the roof. So I recommend you read all the reviews both good and bad before deciding to stay here.

There are lots of people who give this hotel positive reviews which are probably true, but there are issues here. We booked a two-night deal through Travel Zoo, which included a glass of Prosecco. We arrived at around 3:30, after checking in we were shown to our room, by someone who was clearly the handyman, still dressed in his working trousers and tool belt, he was very helpful and showed us the facilities of the hotel, but he didn’t know when the bar opened except that it would probably be very soon. We unpacked and took the long walk through the impressive garden down to the beach. On return at 5:00 the bar wasn’t open, but the helpful handyman said he would get someone. After a further wait, the receptionist brought the Prosecco, to us in the lounge as the bar was still locked, saying that the bar attendant had been very busy serving people in the garden. We could see the garden, there was just one couple there! The bar attendant did arrive wearing an apron that clearly showed she had been doing food preparation.
Next day we went out for the day returning at 4:30 to find our room had not been done. We tried to ring reception from the phone in the room, but there was no directory and interference made it impossible to use, so walked down to reception where we were told that housekeeping was an ‘all day’ service, we explained we wanted to use the room now, but could they come at 6:00, we were told no, that they would be finished by then. We were also told that we could have asked for our room to be done earlier, but of course we didn’t know that it wouldn’t be done by 4:30.
The evening meal was good, and our deal included £30pp credit in the restaurant was the cost of two courses. However, the waiting staff were clearly new and had to come back as he couldn’t remember our order and still forgot the side dish.
Breakfasts good enough, but you have to book a time to eat, we would prefer the flexibility of being able to choose when to eat.
Overall impression Negatives - Staffing is inadequate. Bar stock is limited, no draught beer or slimline tonic. Furnishings and décor would benefit from a makeover (Our personal view) No information in room regarding hotel facilities, fire instructions (other than a map on the wall), room service or local attractions. No lift to top floor rooms.
Positives – Got a free upgrade to room with balcony on our arrival. Room was clean enough, a reasonable size and well equipped. Gardens are very impressive and the private beach a valuable asset (weather permitting!)

Hello peteandsuek, We always welcome feedback so thank you for taking the time to express your opinion on your experience. We pride ourselves on having a multiskilled team so when several people arrived at the same time to avoid any unnecessary waits Chris from our maintenance team was delighted that he could be of assistance and show you around the hotel and assist with your luggage. I am glad you found him so helpful and friendly. Our team work across departments so you will always find a member of the team willing to help in all areas of the hotel, which is why I was delighted to serve your prosecco in the drawing room once you had settled into your room. Our Housekeeping team service rooms throughout the day, not just in morning as explained on check in and are always happy to bring additional supplies if you need them prior to their visit to your room. When next staying with us do let us know if you would like your room serviced earlier in the day and we will do our best to accommodate where possible. The hotel underwent a refurbishment, and the retro décor is intentional and unique in comparison to other hotels in Cornwall. While our aim was to appeal to as many of our guests as possible, we do appreciate that everyone’s taste in décor is different and that what makes us individuals. We book dining times for all meals to ensure the flow of service and all of our guests experience a fabulous time. We highly advise booking dining times prior to your arrival as popular times do get booked up quickly and our restaurant is quite often a sellout. We are passionate about training and you will often see new members of the training with our managers and supervisors, while the aim is to provide an excellent service we are all humans and occasionally mistakes do happen, we are sorry your side dish was slightly delayed. Please know this would never be our intention. As you can see from multiple positive reviews this is a very rare occurrence. We are pleased that over all you enjoyed a pleasant visit and we do hope that we get the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Very Best Wishes Suzannah Sharkey Front of House Manager

We recently stayed in one of the garden rooms, firstly you would never know dogs stay in these rooms as there are spotless so well done to the housekeeping staff. The gardens are amazing but the private beach at the end really does top it off, thanks to Christopher the maintenance man for giving us a lift back up the hill 👍🏼 We didn’t want to leave our dog in the room when we dined so a separate area away from the restaurant was set up, perfect for us so thank you for that, dinner was quite expensive but, quality ingredients cooked perfectly. Would totally recommend this hotel, super dog friendly, great location, superb staff . Just one point , maybe put up a blind in the bathroom (room 36) I mentioned this to the member of staff when we checked out. Thanks all will definitely be returning.

The hotel looks great when you look online but sadly, doesn't meet those first impressions.
The service was very inconsistent and there are no standards being driven by management. This leads to a very uncoordinated service, that was nowhere near the level we would have expected.
Most staff were really polite, with one particular exception. It was more the lack of direction that let the service down.
Most places were clean but a few below par areas, which was again below what you'd expect for the prices being charged. There was mould on the curtains in our room and spiders website in the bathroom.
The location isn't close to anything, so driving will be necessary for anywhere you need to go. The car park is also not big enough for the amount of guests that they accommodate. The private beach was great though.
Our room was very hot, which made sleeping difficult and the noise levels from adjoining rooms are higher than you'd expect. We could hear snoring from next door and televisions from down the corridor. The rooms are at a reasonable standard but it just looks like they've been done on the cheap rather than going for any real level of quality, which again doesn't meet the image of the hotel that it portrays online.
The main highlight was the evening food, which was at a really high standard.

Lovely small hotel in gorgeous surroundings. The room could have been a little cleaner, the tile grouting was black in places and the paintwork could do with a little overhaul, but generally it was comfortable. The grounds are spectacular and the walk down to the beach was idyllic. Although I am very poorly, with my poles to help me I managed a slow walk down and then back up, with plenty of benches to break the walk. The breakfast was outstanding, and the staff were very helpful. Staff were generally available via reception, and there was a bell to ring if there was nobody around. We will definitely book again, but will book via the hotel and not Booking.com, as other guests received a £30 two course meal voucher, which we didn’t receive. Lovely, peaceful hotel.

I have passed your comments regarding the cleanliness of your room to our Head Housekeeper to Kelly to investigate as we strive to maintain high standards throughout the hotel. I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. We offer a bookable ride in our ATV for guests who need assistance accessing our gardens and private beach Bream Cove, next time when staying with us please do let us know if you would like to book this service as the team are always delighted to offer this service. When booking a return stay please do give our reservations team a call as they will happily discuss our rates and packages and find the perfect stay for you. Our restaurant is open to residents and non residents so you are most welcome to book dinner on a pay as you dine basis when booked on a bed and breakfast package. Although we only live 10 miles away we have meant to visit the Hotel Meudon for some time, so rather than just have a meal we decided to stay the night. We are so glad that we did. This hotel looks and is very impressive at first glance, with beautiful gardens and various paths to enjoy the flora and fauna and then walk to the private beach at the bottom. Lovely welcome from Suzannah who had upgraded us to a suite with its own terrace with direct access to the beautiful gardens. The suite had everything you could think of with a huge bed and sliding doors to a sitting area with table and chairs and a sofa looking out on the terrace which is provided with two chairs and a table - a lovely area to enjoy a coffee and enjoy the view. We had a £30 pp dining credit, which allowed us a two course meal from the dinner menu. Food was excellent, We were given some homemade cheese and onion bread with tomato butter to start which was delicious. My husband enjoyed the hake in a lemon butter sauce and I had a gorgeous spring vegetable risotto. Dessert was a difficult choice but we chose the chocolate fondant and rhubarb and almond crumble - both yummy! Breakfast very tasty with lots of choices for the cooked selection - the bubble and squeak being a great addition. Each staff member seemed to enjoy their roles and made every effort to ensure that we enjoyed our stay. Will definitely return and will recommend to all our friends near and far.

We stayed for 4 nights as the middle point of a 3 centre holiday in Cornwall and South Devon. The Meudon is a very classy hotel where service and food are excellent and we had good nights sleep all the nights we were there. It is set in lush sub tropical gardens which extend down the valley to the hotel's own private beach.
Car parking is conveniently spaced out to the side and rear of the hotel.
Our room was spacious and clean, the bed was very comfortable.
Only criticism is that the breakfast room, although a fair size, would not be large enough to take all the guests if the hotel was fully booked. So you have to book your breakfast slot, and the only slots available to us were very early morning such as 7.45am.

Hello Robert N, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review . We are so pleased you enjoyed your time with us and think the food and service we provide are excellent. We book all meal times to ensure the flow of service and so we can spend quality time with all of our visitors . Due to the size of our restaurant we are unable to fit all of our guests in at at one sitting unless serving an event menu . As our wonderful hot Cornish breakfast is cooked to order if all guests had breakfast at the same time there would be considerable delays and this is something we would not like to happen. We advise booking all meals when making a reservation as popular times do get booked up first, we are always try and accommodate requests where possible. Its great to know that overall you enjoyed a fab visit and we hope we get the opportunity to welcome you back again very soon. Best Wishes Suzannah Front of House Manager
