We didn’t want to stay at this hotel, but the pub in the village insisted on a minimum of 2 nights, and as we were walking the coast path that didn’t really work. But we’re glad we did. This was our favourite hotel on our whole walk.

We turned up after a long, tiring day with a really filthy dog, worried we wouldn’t be let in. Asked for a hosepipe and were told not to worry, they’re very dog friendly and we could shower him in our room!

The hotel is so lovely. Breakfast was excellent. The view was gorgeous over the bay and St Michael’s Mount.

We had booked to eat elsewhere, but kind of regret that as the dinner looked amazing too.

We were on foot, but note there were several EV chargers in the car park for next time.

Absolutely perfect hotel that I wish we’d had more time to enjoy.

The Old Coastguard is in the most wonderful setting perched on the cliffs high above Mousehole - I was lucky enough to visit on a sunny day and the gardens were like somewhere in the Med! Beautiful views over Mounts Bay, and of the working fishing boats from out of Newlyn

Lovely menu choices, and value for money. Friendly staff

A lovely place and I am planning a return visit and stay in the hotel later this year

Overall we had a enjoyable stay but there certain areas of stay which were excellent and one area which had quite few down sides.
Our room was a sea view room with balcony. The views were beautiful overlooking Mounts Bay and to the harbour. .Balcony was spacious with 2 chairs and table. Our room was okay, beds very comfortable. However the shower never provided hot enough water though out our stay and the tiling in the cubicle was mouldy around bottom of cubicle. Tea and coffee facilities were woeful. Yes we were offered tea or coffee from the bar on check in, which was good. But then only a few tea bags, English Breakfast and Earl Grey in room, 2 tiny biscuits and small jar of ground coffee for cafeteria. No milk in room, if we wanted milk we had to request it for 7am drink (left outside room on floor at 7am) and when it did arrive it was half a little milk bottle, enough for the one small mug each, not great. If you wanted it at any other time you went down to the bar for it and brought it up. Not exactly relaxing especially as were on 3rd top floor.
The breakfasts were very good and the staff very friendly and helpful. Dinner was enjoyable and menu varied. WIfI was fine.
Parking is in the hotel car park, not a lot of spaces, parking was for both diners and sleeping guests. There are cones which say reserved places for sleeping guests but they weren't put out.. I suppose if your staying and leaving put the cone in the empty parking place. There is a car park next to hotel which is 24 hours and paid via mobile phone etc.... no cash payment.
The gardens are lovely with views out across bay, we had drinks outside. There is also direct access to rocky beach and foot path to village.
Overall we had a good time, just a few things with house keeping arrangements and given the hotel is quite expensive you expect better otherwise would have given an excellent rating. Certainly the major feature of the hotel for us was its location and views.

I rarely feel prompted to write a poor review but when an establishment changes, and no longer seems to value its customers, I will do. A recent visit to the Old Coastguard, a hotel and restaurant I have visited many times over the last 10 years, has left me with a bad feeling. A visit here is not cheap but as others have said the location is fabulous, and in the past the smooth, friendly service made it a favourite. The rooms are still fine but the quirky nature of the decor may now be a little dated and overpriced.

My concerns on this occasion relate to the bar/ restaurant. Prior to dinner I tried to order a bottle of wine. The bottle I chose was unavailable which is ok but the barman was unable to suggest any similar bottle. He was completely uninterested and admitted he knew nothing about the wine list, claiming it was a new list this week. Another member of staff was called but she said that she knew nothing either as the training on this list was next week. The wine list has no real description of the wines, rather a few flowery words which tell you little. Eventually she decided to read the label on the back of my third attempt to order ( the second was also out of stock). None of this seems too troubling until you realise these wines are priced at £48 per bottle. I expect more at this price.

The flavour of the food was acceptable but several elements were odd, the mashed potato with the pollock was so runny it had melted into the huge amount of mustard sauce in which the fish was swimming. The apple tarte tatin was lukewarm and served on a cold plate.

Also by the way if you are less than impressed with the new fashion of restaurants allowing dogs everywhere then watch out. Dogs were seen on sofas and are also now allowed in the main part of the restaurant. Not to everybody’s taste.

I did share my concerns with the hotel on checkout but they seemed largely uninterested. The suggestion that they would aim to put these right before my next visit falls on deaf ears. I’m afraid this was my last visit as it is no longer the hotel and restaurant it once was.

My brother and i have had lunch here many times and thought they provided one of the best roasts in Cornwall. The Manager Alex has offered the car park which is for guests only to us every time we have had lunch if there has been a space available. However, today when we parked Alex was not there and we were told we could not park as they were expecting 14 people to book in. As there are only 14 rooms in the place and there were already guests booked in i found this hard to believe. The barman and the person standing in for the Manager Alex was condescending, rude and unfriendly about it even when i pointed out the car park machines were broken. As good as the roast is this left a bad taste in our mouth so we left. My brother is a world renown artist and sends a lot of business their way but was so upset about this he has said that we will now never go back nor recommend it to anyone else. We found a fantastic award winning place just down the road in Perranuthnoe who were very warm and welcoming so we will be going there every other week now. The rudeness and pettiness of these people has cost the Coastguards 2 people who pay around £70 every 2 weeks which amounts to a lot of income over the year. It is such a shame that Alex is away as she ran the place so well and the staff were so well spoken, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. It seems the place has lost all that now.

Staff all friendly and helpful. Lovely sea views and garden at rear of hotel.

We had a “better” double room. It was a decent size and comfortable. Unusual omissions were a wardrobe and no shaver socket. No TV ( but knew that before we arrived). The room was exposed to the street outside due the lovely large sash windows being right by the bus stop/queue on the opposite side of a narrow road and the house opposite had a view directly in the room and vice versa.

The food was really disappointing. We were there for three nights, the limited menu was identical for the first two nights, with a slight variation on the third night. We tried various dishes but all were heavily over seasoned with predominantly Middle Eastern spices. By the third night we were dreading eating but were assured the menu was different ( it was marginally different - but no more appetising). The kitchen was very slow indeed. It took two hours and ten minutes in total to deliver our three courses on the last evening (we were not slow eaters as we left a large part of our first two courses).

We arrived early and managed to get a parking space. Not a problem as they had our room available. Really couldn't have been more helpful. My mum is dairy free and gluten free and they confirmed this and also said would have almond milk and normal milk left by front door 1st thing in the morning so we could have a hot drink. We were in the top room 6 which is a kingsize and has a twin room attached. So lovely and clean, great views and lovely little touches. Really well thought out. It was the last day of a beer festival so was quite busy but on a sunny day we managed to get seating just looking out to the sea. booked an evening meal and again they were very attentive and gave good options for my Mum. Food was lovely, small portions but very good, the salted caramel pudding was to die for. Had a lovely nights sleep and felt refreshed in the morning which was finished off with a very tasty full english. Will definitely come back as loved this place. Until next time and thanks for a wonderful stay.

This place is a scam and has sadly been destroyed by the new owners . The food is unfulfilling and overpriced. Do not go here if you are hungry. I was served a piece of lamb smaller than a cigarette packet and summer vegetables of a piece of rocket and fourteen peas ((yes I counted them.) For this they charged over£35.

The new owners rely on the Coastguards history and location claiming " We want The Coastguard to be at the centre of its local community with beer and drinks prices set for its regular customers, not the incoming tourists." THIS IS A SCAM. No locals visit, mainly because they are not welcome and are asked to leave.

This so called gastopub is totally artificial and unauthentic aiming to cater for the Surrey Set whilst scamming off of the local history but treating the local community with contempt. Please be warned.

We stayed for six nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis: the staff were wonderful but, overall, this hotel was a bit of a disappointment.

On the positive side, the friendly, happy restaurant staff were a delight. There was plenty of hot water and the bathroom was spotlessly clean. The hotel is in a good location close to the pretty village centre and harbour; there are frequent buses to Penzance. It was quiet and sleep quality was good. Wi-Fi was fast and widely available.

However, the dinner menu hardly changed during our stay. Main courses were mostly the same sauces with different fish, and somehow they all tasted the same. Eventually we discovered there were some hidden specials, for main courses only, but only available if you asked. But these were not great. Starters and puddings didn't change much either. After a few days, sadly we really didn’t look forward to dinner - which should have been a highlight of our stay. Three courses for two is over £100 with one of their less expensive wines.

Our “sea view” room was very small. It had a terrace with chairs but the sea can only be seen when standing; the view is blocked by a wall when sitting.

Overall, we felt this hotel was expensive and not value for money. But the rooms and restaurant were full every night, so they must be doing something right. Perhaps a hotel to stay for a couple of nights rather than a week.

A lovely two night stay with comfortable bed, lovely spacious bathroom and plenty of hot water when we needed it. Lovely selection on the menu of fancy food , tasty smallish portions, some unusual dishes. Enjoyed trying different foods. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Agree with previous review about the tea and coffee provided in the room, wasn’t replenished after our first night, I’m sure they would happily have provided more but not what you want to have to go in search of first thing in the morning, pleased that they have got rid of plastic milk pods but need far more fresh milk please. Appreciate the 12.5% gratuity in the restaurant is optional and good to know it is shared amongst all staff, but really don’t like it being imposed , I would like the choice.

The room we stayed in, was at the car park end of the building and had a terrace / balcony with chairs and a table. You could see St Michaels Mount and lovely views of the sea. Very nice. (It also had a wet room) There is no lift, as far as I recall, however we only needed to go up one floor to our room from the bar and dining room. The lounge area is then down a further short set of steps. The hotel and it's garden is on a slope that runs from the road to the sea, so there are two main changes to the ground floor levels as it accomodates this. The road is almost level with the first floor bedrooms and the lounge area is about 12 feet lower with small flights of steps between. I think you can access some rooms from the road with minimal use of stairs, although getting to and from the main social areas will involve more stairs. Hope that makes sense.

Svein, you should write to the HOTEL. See their website where you will find the email address for bookings. I made a comment on TripAdvisor but I do not run the hotel! Good luck.
