Hotel Penzance stands out for its spotless rooms and picturesque views, earning praise from numerous guests for its cleanliness. While the dining options are considered thoughtful and the rooms comfortable, some guests feel the amenities could be enhanced and have encountered service inconsistencies.
Criticism has been directed at the perceived lack of value, with reports of overpricing and extra charges. Although the hotel's atmosphere receives compliments for its tasteful decor, issues with maintenance and occasional outdated furnishings have been highlighted by some reviewers.

Detailed Reviews
Two female friends, aged 40, travelled during Covid restrictions for 5nts.
This hotel has a perfect location, 7mins walk from the train station (5mins up a steep hill so not for the immobile) with beautiful views of the harbour and the sea and possible St Michael's Mount.
Breakfast was delicious, the same quality you would get in a restaurant with good variety, which was important over 5 nights. I booked direct to take advantage of the free breakfast offer however, be warned they said this needed to be 14 days notice which I wasn't aware of but they kindly honored the upgrade anyway.
Food generally was very good here. We had the Afternoon Tea and it was delicious (for £20 with a glass of fizz) We had a choice of sandwiches and bread which was perfect for us. One scone, which is actually enough.
The interior of the hotel matched the rooms and the description. It was very well appointed throughout, the fire was on in the sitting room and the toilets in the restaurant were lovely and clean.
Staff are very friendly and welcoming, offering advice and help.
Rooms were very well appointed, bright, airy and well decorated. The heaters kept the room lovely and warm. My only complaint was I had booked a sea view room and upon arrival the windows were high up and small which meant to see the view you needed to stand up and forcibly look out of the window to see the sea (22 St Tudy) The room next door appeared to have a full length window view of the sea which is what we thought we would have and booked on that basis. Slight marketing manipulation, this room should have partial sea view in the description and the cost reflected as we had booked and spend the extra money on that basis.
We would recommend placing hooks on the wall for wet coats and a full length mirror.
A fab hotel for a base, we walked to St Michael's Mount (1.5hrs) and Mousehole (1.5hrs) Got a bus to Land's End (one hour) and a train to St Ives (30mins) There's also a large Sainsbury's nearby.
We ate in Penzance most night but recommend booking during Covid.

Dear Nicolajdrake, thank you for your positive and detailed review and glad you enjoyed our newly reburbished rooms and location so you could explore Penzance and the surrounding area. Your comments have been noted and the restaurant in which you enjoyed your breakfast also serves a delicious and great value menu for which you don't have to book a table but it is highly recommended to avoid disappointment. I look forward to welcoming you again when next in the area. Best wishes Sue, Guest relations.

We stayed here for 5 nights in January and really enjoyed it. The staff gave us a warm welcome and were helpful and friendly throughout our stay. After we got home they even posted us two items which we had left in the room. We had a very comfortable spacious room with both bath and shower and a great view over the harbour and along the coast in the distance. Food in the restaurant - breakfast, cream tea and dinner was excellent. The hotel's location allowed us to do our holiday walking sections of the coast entirely by public transport. It is a few minutes walk to the railway and bus stations, although the short hill is a bit steep with suitcases (It was raining when we left and a taxi cost £3.40). Our train journey from Cambridgeshire went smoothly and Penzance is at the hub of a really good local bus service, which allowed us to get to various locations on or near the coast path. Penzance itself is a pleasant little town to walk round and very tasty picnic lunches can be bought from several pasty shops near the bus and railway stations.
Being midwinter, the price we paid for our stay and meals, booked directly with the hotel was affordable and exceptional value

We stayed for two nights on a short mid week break . Staff on reception friendly and helpful. Our room was on the top floor with great views of the town and harbour and was spotless with a very comfortable bed.
We had dinner in the hotel on our first night as it was part of the excellent offer they had on and I have to say it was very good indeed.
After a days walking we returned on the second day to a mouth watering cream tea that was probably the best I have ever had.
Breakfast is also very good great choice and well cooked.
Overall you will do well to find better and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel we will definitely come again

We stayed at the Hotel Penzance in October 2020 and did so as part of a whistle stop tour of Cornwall. Having driven the best part of 5 hours to get to Cornwall and visited Lands End and Sennen Cove for sunset we arrived around 18:00 and were looking forward to it.
You are greeted by a very inviting lounge with a grand piano and an incredibly friendly receptionist but it's worth highlighting parking is at a premium. The car park is incredibly steep and there is circa 10 spaces for a 20 plus room hotel. The policy is to use local roads as there are no restrictions but if you are less mobile be prepared for a steep entry. If you get a space........ be ready for some good manoeuvring. This isn't a criticism but is worth being aware of.
We paid extra for a sea view and were given room 27 and it has to be said that you can see the sea and the railway line. Our photos very much show this view.
The room itself was spacious and a very comfortable bed with a pod coffee machine. That said, we do have to say that the rain head shower over the bath looked inviting but the pressure (we were on the third floor) was lacking and does need some attention. Generally speaking, the bathroom does need a bit of TLC to bring it up to the same spec as the room.
We were caught out in Penzance. We arrived around 18:00 and very much wanted to have a local pint in the town but COVID restrictions made that difficult and when we rang the hotel to see if we could have dinner we were told last orders for dinner are at 20:30. It is also worth being aware that alcohol is not allowed to be sold after 22:00 and it would have been nice to be made aware of this as we could have planned around it.
Breakfast the next morning though was lovely. Eggs Royale was superb and you were treated to a lovely view of the bay as you drank your coffee.
We were also very touched by Sue sending us some local flowers on our return and very much felt we were listened to.
We very much felt the hotel was very good but timing and circumstances didn't let us see it at its best. The staff were very pleasant and we very much would like to return to let circumstances see it at its best

Dear 958andyr, Thank you for taking the time to post a detailed and positive review. I'm happy you liked the room, and breakfast before you went on your way. We are very lucky to be able to offer parking to most of our guests and we do have a drop off zone by reception for ease of unloading your luggage. Welcome to Cornwall in respect of hills and we command fantastic views across Mounts Bay and beyond because we are up a hill. I am looking forward to welcoming you again when fancy doing another whistle stop tour or a longer stay with us. Best wishes Sue, Guest Relations.

We decided to book a couple of nights away because our wedding was unfortunately cancelled due to the recent pandemic. We decided to treat ourselves and booked the superior room which was nice and clean and offering fantastic views over the nearby coast, at £220 a night though i did feel it was grossly overpriced. The hotel staff are friendly and accommodating.
Sadly the restaurant was an entirely different experience than the hotel. Poor service, lazy staff and poorly managed. It became obvious to us that they had little training and experience and were quite frankly overwhelmed on every service even when it wasnt particularly busy.
On one service it took us 40 minutes before we even got offered a drink let alone a menu and didnt recieve our food until gone 9 when we had our table booked before 8pm.
Fortunately the food was pleasant enough but still tainted the overall experience.

The positives: The location is good, close to the town and train station. The staff were very friendly throughout our stay and the food was delicious. I think they were understaffed as like most hospitality venues at the moment, so there was a delay on food and drinks, but it didn't bother us. The covid measures they have in place are good - staff wearing masks, hand sanitiser around the building and a one-way system.
The negatives: I hate to give negatives as I work in hospitality myself, but the price of this hotel for what you get is ridiculous. We booked a cosy room and it was very cosy, very small which didn't bother us too much. What bothered us, was that the window faced a sloping roof with air vents from the kitchens, it was very hot in our room so we had to open windows which leaked the vent smells from the kitchen into our room. Also trying to get to sleep in the evening was difficult as our room backed onto the kitchens and staff area you could hear people chatting loudly after their shift. This should not be a bedroom, maybe a storage cupboard?
The nail in the coffin was the price, at £219 per night we would have expected more. The prices are far too high.

Dear guest(s), Thank you so much for your review. We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed our location and that our staff were their usual helpful selves. I understand that while positive changes are being made, this does not aid you as you have since departed. What I can guarantee to you is that, should you return and stay with us again, this will not occur again. We appreciate your feedback on our rooms, and all of your feedback will be reviewed by our management team. They will strive to make positive changes ASAP. After a long hard slog for the last 18 months we were ready for a relaxing holiday. The Hotel Penzance provided exactly that a beautiful quiet location, extremely helpful and friendy staff, and the resturant food was very good and reasonably priced. Yes, we would return tomorow if we could, but for sure will be back next year. Alan and Edith Taylor.

We found the main hotel, reception and housekeeping team all very good. However, not sure if the restaurant is owned by the hotel or franchised out as the service and food were poor.
Our room was presented very nicely. We arrived from the night train and the reception staff were friendly and had no trouble looking after our bags and then putting them in the room for when we got back.
We booked dinner and breakfast for two nights. After the first first dinner and breakfast we cancelled our reservation and were very glad we did.
The alternatives we used were much nicer, both in food quality, service and price.
Helly's Cafe - beautiful food, staff looked after locals and tourists equally well. Good for breakfast/lunch.
Turks Head Inn - one member of staff made a busy lunch service look effortless. we would recommend that the Hotel Penzance Restaurant team have a work lunch here so they can see a good example of how to run a busy service.
Gino's Spaghetti House - brilliant for dinner, and they can cook steak to order. We would recommend the chef to visit here and order a steak and see the difference between here and their own restaurant.
The reason for the poor review in relation to the restaurant include, drinks orders stacking up on the bar so diners had to collect their own, poor cooking of food, not checking in to establish if there are any problems, accidentally throwing drinks over customers. The minimum order was for two courses, we were left so long after one course we left.
Breakfast service was worse. There were four staff available to serve, so more than enough for a great service. One four slice domestic toaster for a four star hotel is unacceptable. I've seen shorter queue's to catch a plane than the one that built up by the toaster. When reading the breakfast menu, it was apparent that many items on the menu were not available. One waiter then came and took the menu from the table? Cheap sliced bread. No pastries. Limited juice. It also appeared that the restaurant manager swapped the nicely prepared fruit salad (which takes 15 mins?) for the fruit bowl in their home. Putting unprepared fruit out is lazy. Limited options for vegetarians and vegans, it would be easy enough to have mashed avocado, halloumi etc. Finally, whatever you do, do not ask for butter. This took a special request to the chef and was delivered to the table as if it were the crown jewels.
Thank you again to the reception and housekeeping team, you are keeping the hotel afloat.

We agree with you that Helly's, Turks Head and Gino's are all lovely venues, we wish them all the best! We appreciate the suggestions you have made. I have passed them on to our management team. I am so sorry to read that you had a less than brilliant time at our restaurant. I shall ensure that this feedback is seen by all of our team. We'd love to see you again, so please keep us in mind if you have another trip to Cornwall planned. Kind regards, Enya Reception Host, Hotel Penzance

Oh dear. A catalogue of errors. We made two telephone calls, emailed our requirements at the request of the hotel, re-sent the email and were told the manager would be in touch to confirm the rate for a small group. The rooms were showing available on their website before the telephone calls. Hearing nothing after about a fortnight either by email or phone (as promised) we then rang a third time to be told they were fully booked. Obviously it is great for a hotel to be in a position to be so relaxed about potential customers but not so good if you are that customer. Certainly nothing 4**** about the service.

We were really looking forward to visiting the Hotel Penzance but found ourselves stressed from the start with not enough and extremely steep, awkward parking. If you aren’t lucky enough to get a space or street parking, then the only option is to park near train station which involves a walk up a very steep hill.
Upon check in we were told we were on the top floor and there was no lift and no help with our luggage.
Delicious meal in the restaurant the first night, one of the best meals we’ve had, but when we asked to book again for the following 2 nights there was no availability. Turns out the restaurant is open to outside guests. Surely guests should automatically be booked a table and be able to get dinner? This actually ruined our stay.
Breakfast was rather a poor experience. I understand hospitality is struggling with staff numbers and we were happy and prepared to wait but service was so poor. Disorganised, things missing, wrong cutlery, a completely different experience from our only meal in the restaurant. When I asked the 2nd morning could I have Danish pastries the waiter said that they didn’t have stock today. No apology! Limited fruit in a bowl, choice of only 2 cereals, no yoghurts, and cooked breakfast items of poor quality.
Garden was very untidy and made hotel exterior look unwelcoming.
To have paid £220 per night, you expect a lovely, well kept, welcoming hotel and decent experience but we felt really let down and robbed. Receptionist didn’t even ask if we had enjoyed our stay, probably too worried to. She wasn’t to blame, she was lovely, but the management need to look at how they run their business.
The first night/day we spent extra money in the hotel and were prepared to the subsequent nights. Due to lack of dinners we decided not to spend more at the hotel so sadly bought cans of gin and tonics, our own wine and nibbles to have in our room, because why would we want to spend money when we couldn’t even get a table in the restaurant and the bar area was closed.
Hotel should not be charging full price for a limited and poor service.
Definitely wouldn’t stay again or recommend at that price.

Response from Reception Host, Guest Services / Front Office at Hotel Penzance
Responded 3 Oct 2021
Dear guest(s), I am truly and deeply sorry that this has happened to you! I am shocked to see this, and completely agree that this is not a 4-star service. While we are deeply saddened to have let you down, we are also extremely grateful to you for bringing this to our attention. I have passed on all of your comments to our management team who will address all of this immediately. In the meantime, I would like to apologise to you, again, for all of the experiences you have detailed. We would love the opportunity to redeem ourselves, so please get in touch if you're back in Cornwall and we can offer you a preferential rate or a complementary upgrade (subject to availability). I understand from this that you may not wish to take us up on this offer, but please know that you are always welcome to come back to Hotel Penzance. We hope you had a safe journey home and we look forward to the possibility of seeing you again, and a chance to make up for the errors we have made. Kind regards, Enya, Reception Host, Hotel Penzance

We went around February and it was closed then but not sure exactly what time of year it is open and closed.
Our room had obviously been redecorated recently as it was really smart and we could smell the paint. The bathroom was fine as far as far and clean and usable but the decor was dated compared to the room.
No very limited but there is street parking
We have 2 rooms on the ground floor which are accessible and have level access from the car park. We have rooms on 1st floor which are up one flight of stairs which has a handrail. The hotel is non smoking throughout. Some beds are king some are queen doubles. If you specify at the time of booking we should be able to accommodate your wishes.
Kind regards
Andrew
