Tregenna Castle Resort offers a mixed experience, with guests enjoying the spacious and comfortable rooms despite noting their dated decor and lack of cleanliness. While the service receives accolades for its attentiveness, some visitors have encountered less satisfactory interactions. The resort's atmosphere and cleanliness are generally well-regarded, although opinions on decor vary. Despite its excellent location with stunning views and peaceful ambiance, some guests feel the resort falls short in value, pointing to the need for room and amenity updates to justify the cost.

We have just had a 4 night stay at Tregenna Castle. Having read the mixed reviews I have to say I wasn’t really looking forward to it. We arrived and gave our name to security before driving up the long drive to the Castle. Certainly impressive to look at and fabulous grounds.
Yes, when first entering the Hotel it looked dated and I feared the worst. Our room too was dated and the bathroom very basic.
However, as soon as we started exploring the grounds and the town of St Ives, we really began to appreciate this wonderful Hotel.
There is a shortcut down steps into the town but it really is a steep uphill walk back so be mindful of this. The free carpark here too is a huge perk as the car parks in the town are all overcrowded.
Our room was very comfortable, especially the bed. We did ask for 2 extra pillows and they were left outside the room within 5 mins.
The shower and bath were perfect.
We didn’t have housekeeping come to the room during the stay but it wasn’t a problem.
It was perhaps the breakfast that I will remember the most. You need to book your time slot as there are max numbers allowed in at a time. You complete a sheet to indicate what you would like - pastries, cereals, cooked breakfast etc. I have to say I have never had such a fantastic breakfast in any Hotel we have stayed. Everything cooked to perfection and served so quickly by lovely staff.
We had to wear masks at all times in public areas and there were plenty of sanitizers around so everything felt clean and safe.
The staff were always lovely and helpful.
To come away from a Hotel where all my expectations had been exceeded is rare. That coupled with its perfect position for access to St Ives makes it a perfect holiday destination.
Thank you so much to Tregenna for a fabulous stay in St Ives.

Stayed 2 nights in a West Wing Sea View room. The room was lovely and views stunning, we had a four poster bed and two chairs and table to sit and enjoy the view which we really enjoyed. Large airy bathroom.
Breakfast was served at the table after filling in request form at the table, food was served on hot plates and was tasty. No checks to see if you wanted more coffee or toast. The cutlery was presented in a cellophane package which I understand was due to COVID but at the previous nights dinner it was in a paper bag which is much more eco friendly! The amount of cellophane being used must be huge 😞
The dinner we had on our first night as part of the package was bland and over cooked. I had Thai Fish Cakes which I love but they were tasteless. My partner had the Arancini Balls, the risotto was overcooked, mushy and again tasteless.
We both had the chicken and garlic crushed potatoes as our main course which again was really nothing to write home about, it was dry and unappealing with a sauce from the 70s. We were on a 6.30pm sitting so goodness knows what it was like for the later arrivals. We ate in town the following evening.
The dining room had no table linen and whilst I appreciate again the COVID situation they can be changed, it felt like eating your romantic evening meal in a works canteen, and the really old fashioned music that was playing just did not add anything to the whole experience.
This is my second visit to the Tregenna Castle, and I do think it is a lovely hotel with beautiful grounds and stunning views.Sadly the pool was closed due to COVID but I know many pools are open but this is their choice.
I would go back but would only stay on as B&B and eat in town.

Like so many others, we wold of been abroad this summer, but after flights being cancelled decided upon a last minute south west road trip, We booked the Tregenna for 3 nights. We took the only room available which was an inside view, given that we are out all day exploring that was fine.
The resort has very well maintained grounds. We paid £628 for 3 nights with breakfast which we feel was expensive given that the indoor pool was still closed, the outdoor pool open, which needed to be booked, but was told fully booked for a week, we saw people in there only on 2 occasions. The room was very basic and small, appreciating that soft furnishings have been removed due to COVID 19 restrictions but thankfully we took pillows as I had read that they are only providing one each. There was no safe in the room. Hence why I have stated average, as there is no good option and cannot agree to very good.
Breakfast was well managed, providing you with a tick sheet so that the buffet could be served to you. We didn't eat in the hotel otherwise but did have drinks at the bar at night, that could be ordered via an app. Friendly staff in the bar.
The location is great for exploring, although if you are not a great walker, you will struggle back up the cut through path to town. It's a calorie burn short but steep hill.
I would stay again but probably in the self catering option.

Dear Joanne W, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. We are pleased that you found the grounds to be very well maintained and the breakfast to be well managed. The safety of our guests and staff will always be our first priority. With that in mind it was decided it was not safe enough to reopen the indoor leisure facilities. Our outdoor is very popular and does close after every swim to be cleaned. We are pleased that you would stay with us again, and we do hope its not to long before we get to welcome you back.

Having left a 2 star review back in 2018, and still no improvements I’m disappointed to be leaving a worse review. My partners family have a timeshare and despite asking for improvements they fall on deaf ears. The carpets in the lodges are threadbare (apart from being unhygienic given the location) and the decor leaves a lot to be desired. The money you charge for stays and you’re presented with a bench from a pub garden and plastic garden chairs.
The jetted bath tub spit out other people’s hair when my 3 year old turned them on. Disgusting.
The lodges need gutting and updating.
There’s zero phone signal or WiFi in the grounds, and given Covid you’re encouraged to do everything via their
App (QR code to a website, not an app in sight) which fails to connect regardless of phone network. And WiFi at the lodge is barely better. The soft furnishings are grim, I doubt management would sit on the stained chairs so what do they expect paying guest to? And the sofas are rock hard. If you are thinking of booking, don’t bother. The grounds might be nice but to be honest all the trees block out any light from the bedrooms (maybe because they don’t want you to see where you’re sleeping in full daylight).

Dear kristens18, We are extremely surprised to read your review about our Pole Lodges. We have high volumes of guests, including members such as your partners family and we have very little negative feedback regarding these properties. That being said, we naturally welcome feedback so that we can improve. Please can you provide further information about the actual property that you stayed in and the date too so that we can investigate the issues that you have raised. If you could please email hotel@tregenna-castle.co.uk We apologise for the lack of phone signal however as you can imagine this is out of our control. The wifi is usually reliable throughout the estate however with higher than usual volumes of users over the last few weeks, it has come under increasing strain. We are unaware of any complete blackouts with it though. The feedback regarding ordering food and drink via the QR code has been overwhelmingly positive so this is unusual to hear your thoughts on this. We apologise for not being as technologically advanced as you may have wanted. Finally, please accept our apologies for you not enjoying your stay. We always want our guests to leave happy and we’re sorry that you didn’t have this experience.

Very disappointed with our stay. Our room was very dated and old fashioned and not at all modern and had a musty smell to it. The bathroom ceiling had lots of mould on it and given how much the room cost, I expected at least some shampoo, conditioner and maybe some body cream, but no, all you are given is a tiny bar of soap for your hands and a squeezy bottle on the wall of the bath / shower for shower gel. I had a better room at a premier inn i stayed at the night before !

Breakfast was awful. Toast was black on one side, sausages could barely be cut with a knife and hash browns tasted stale and days old. The natural yoghurt was watery and grainy and the cereals on offer were tiny Kellogg selection boxes and the pastries were cold. I wish I'd gone to the Tesco or costa just down the road for breakfast rather than pay for the overpriced breakfast here.

Staff were friendly and helpful though and measures were in place to help prevent the spread of covid. However, all cuterly was served at breakfast time in plastic wrappers which I found very wasteful- especially at the cuterly served at dinner times were in a paper wrapper.

Evening meals were nice but over priced. The dining room was again very old fashioned and dated, I honestly felt like I was sat in an old persons home and was waiting for the bingo to start (though that may have livened up the dull atmosphere a bit).

All in all, I didn't enjoy my stay and felt it was ridiculously over priced for what you get - we didn't even have a room with a view, we were on the lower level and all we could see was a fire escape and bare wall outside of our window.

This hotel is very poor value.
For £200+ per night I would expect a porter service, for my room to be made up daily and towels and cups changed daily - none of which happened.
Breakfast was extra.
The room itself (93) was dark, with a small sash window that didn’t stay open, looking out onto an rusty generator unit.
Soap is slimy and no vanity kit provided. One tap was loose and toilet seat was wonky. I don’t recall ventilation in the bathroom.
The dining room looks more like a bingo hall and the food is average/poor. Gritty salad and dirty glasses were not welcome.
Men’s room by reception could have been cleaner.
Public areas looked tired.
Bar service was slow with an unusable app that people ignored.
Not a good advert for StIves.

Dear JDjanogly, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay. We are not able to clean/service the room during the stay. This is to protect you and our house-keeping team. The Housekeeping/reception would of been more than happy to provide any items that you required/replaced during your stay. All reservations can be made either on a bed &breakfast or room only basis. This would of been evident when you made your booking.

We stayed at Tregenna castle as a couple for two nights. The hotel is in a nice location with views over St Ives which is also within walking distance. Our hotel room was modern with Netflix on the TV and a powerful waterfall shower. Cornish tea and coffee was provided in the room. We had breakfast included with our stay which was very good. There was a wide selection of food including hot foods, cereal, fruit and pancakes.

On our second night we ate dinner in the hotels restaurant. We were a bit disappointed by this as we feel the food was average and did not reflect the cost. The restaurant itself was also in a room off to the side with low ceilings which was not as nice as some of the other rooms such as the breakfast room which had high ceilings and grand decor. I ordered the fish and chips to find a dead insect in my tartar sauce which was there before it was brought out of the kitchen. The waiter changed it but did not apologise which was quite rude.

Overall the hotel itself is nice however you can get a much nicer meal at the same price or cheaper by walking to St Ives. The Rum and Crab Shack is highly recommended .

Cannot fault the beauty of this castle, especially when you first arrive. The man on the gate was very friendly and gave a wonderful first impression of the place and continued to do so throughout our stay.

We stayed in one of the self catering apartments, which was more than adequate for our needs. A separate bathroom for each bedroom which was a nice touch, generally very cosy and bright. There was however no wifi at all throughout our stay and when asked at reception we just kept getting the same answer 'it is being worked on and will be up and running soon' which it never did and speaking to other guests they have had this problem for weeks so we would rather they just be honest.

The other big let down was the food, on our first night we went for what we thought would be a lovey meal but after being ignored for half an hour after being taken to our table (didn't even get asked if we wanted a drink), two of our party of three didn't enjoy their meal at all. They ordered paella, one was seafood and one meat and they were both very similar. The seafood one had meat in it and hardly any seafood but in general they were not home made at all, just a basic 'out of a packet' meal and for the price of £21 extremely disappointing. The service wasn't great despite it not being overly busy for late on a Sunday evening and we physically had to go up to staff at the end to pay our bill, it was like we were invisible. We decided to eat out for the rest of our stay and there are plenty of places to do so which made up for it, just a shame as we would of eaten more in the castle.

Overall, beautiful surroundings and we enjoyed our accommodation very much.

We had a great stay at Tregenna Castle, good location lots to do in St Ives and we also travelled around Cornwall. The castle is good, lovely grounds, we stayed in room 60 with fab views over St Ives harbour, it was spacious and comfy the beds especially comfy, with a very modern bathroom. The hotel Covid secure with sanitiser everywhere and masks to be warn in Communal areas, no room refresh during stay and had to strip own bed and bag up with towels which is no trouble to keep everyone safe. We had breakfast which was lovely ordered and served at table. Most facilities were closed due to Covid which was a shame and not reflected in price. The walk to town is not for the faint hearted with an exceptionally steep hill through the castle grounds. The staff here were amazing really helpful and friendly and in fact made our stay all the more delightful.

This was a much needed 3 day break after a very long Lockdown in Wales. Rather than booking online I rang up to book as we wanted accommodation that offered 2 double beds. A very helpful gentleman on the phone suggested we stayed at Gamekeepers Cottage which had been recently refurbished.

Gamekeepers is down near the main Gate/barrier in the Village part of the resort and 5 mins walk to the hotel just along the driveway. We were impressed from the moment we arrived as it was immaculately clean, very spacious and perfect for what we wanted with 2 bathrooms and 4 flatscreen Televisions! This meant we had all the facilities of the resort but also with our own private self catering apartment. We did choose the option of having breakfast in the main restaurant of the hotel every morning which was nice as I've had enough of cooking at home in Lockdown. Breakfasts were just as good as when we stayed last year even though you book a time slot and when you get to your table you fill in a form ticking boxes to say exactly what you want and it is all brought to you on a tray efficiently and quite quickly. If you needed another coffee or any extras you just asked as the staff were great and coping well with all the Covid regulations. We also had dinner there the first night which again was pretty good - 2 Sunday roasts and a Lasagne.

We booked our swim slots in the outdoor heated pool. You have to be there on time and you get the best part of an hour to swim but you are meant to change back at your room/cottage afterwards and all the loungers have been removed again for Covid reasons. The times we swam (late afternoon) there was probably a max of about 12 in the pool and we managed to get a slot every day. The indoor pool is closed because of Covid rules.

As usual, and especially as we had some great weather in September, we enjoyed the lovely gardens, sitting on the lawn for a drink outside the front of the hotel, strolling down through the tropical gardens in the evening for a meal in the town. We dined in 'The Beach' where the fish is good and 'Firehouse' which was great for a steak but we booked both restaurants well in advance. When dark, we caught a taxi back with Ace Cars - usually £5/6 but worth it as that hill is very steep coming back after a good meal.

We felt safe and now we have been back over 3 weeks we can say we didn't catch the dreaded Coronavirus and the holiday did us the world of good even though St Ives itself was very busy walking around.

One final point about Gamekeepers - it's not the quietest part of the resort as it is next to the main road to St Ives so if you want the windows open it is quite noisy but very comfortable with good beds and well equipped with oven, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, kettle etc. but no hob for cooking. Thank you Tregenna for another lovely stay. We hope to be back next year.

Is there a reason you're looking for restaurants in Carbis? Porthminster is closer and has some lovely beachfront restaurants. You have to book now though and give your card details. I actually find this a safer bet as playing by ear could leave you searching for hours to find a place due to the high volume of holidaymakers come July. Carbis bay resort has some nice beachfront restaurants and even offers a picnic on the beach but it's expensive (£50 per person 👀)
