I must strongly disagree with a couple of reviews i have read from 2015 and 2016. Firstly to "wreck of a hotel" i say a beautiful old building lovingly cared for. If this reviewer equates old with wreck i am not sure how they would measure other elements of living in England. Some of the modern chickenshacks that don't grace...

I love staying in this hotel, conveniently situated on the Cathedral square although it is quite old and can use a make-over. The best treat of all is eating in the Michelin Star Café or fine-dining in the Michelin Star restaurant.

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Clarence a week or so prior to the disastrous fire that destroyed one of our favourite hotels. We visited every year for our anniversary. The staff was amazing, always going out of their way to make sure our visit was special. They'd leave a note welcoming us and congratulating us. They clearly...

Me and my partner stayed here for our wedding anniversary. It was fantastic the service and the food were brilliant. It's such a shame what happened to it. Hopefully they will be able to rebuild it to what it used to be

I too was staying at the Royal Clarence the night of the fire having enjoyed a delicious dinner in the restaurant the night before. I have always found the staff extremely welcoming and their professionalism and concern for their guests that night could not be faulted. The owner has promised to rebuild and we hope the Royal Clarence will one...

We had an overnight stay in Exeter to explore the city (meal out and shopping the next day). The room was very well furnished and equipped. The ABode was an excellent location right in the heart of Exeter a few metres from the cathedral. Hopefully they'll be able to rebuild it.

Known this 1769 Hotel, and in fact the building is older, hotel for many years myself. Overlooking Exeter's magnificent Cathedral. Had a most pleasant dinner there in September - rooms were already fully booked. Great staff, I hope they are looked after by the fire insurance. An immense historic loss. Please rebuild it in the same style....with magnificent 1769 crest...

This is the second time that I stayed at this hotel - the first time was in June 2016, when I stayed for 2 nights and had a large room overlooking the Cathedral. On this occasion, I had booked what they call a comfortable double room, and was happily upgraded on my arrival to a "desirable" room on the third...

Stayed a night on our way to Plymouth from Southampton. Hotel location very good. Effort has been put in to modernise. Service bit cold at front desk. Excellent breakfast. I left a shirt behind and have emailed them numerous times with no response yet.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Looking to the future of The Royal Clarence, we have every intention to rebuild the hotel with enormous sympathy.. The 18th-century hotel, said to be one of the oldest in England, was gutted when a blaze spread from an adjacent building on Friday morning. The fire wrecked the inside of the landmark building and left the frontage on the brink of collapse. ... more   less
