Disappointed by avoidable errors. We were planning a family celebration in Exeter and chose the Royal Clarence for its great location and beautiful views over the Cathedral. They didn't disappoint but too many other details were overlooked. I had booked a Fabulous Suite - room 402, one of the most expensive rooms in the house - so had very high...

Lovely staff, great location. Otherwise a rip-off. Tiny tiny rooms. Toiletries worse than in a simple B&B. Overpriced drinks- tea/coffee/ water. The noise from the pub outside is unbearable on a Saturday night. Overrated. Planning to visit Exeter often as son in Uni- will never come here again or recommend to anyone.

The only drawback was that parking and the breakfast were a bit too expensive. Make sure you read the directions to get to the hotel. It is really confusing. Other than that it was the most enjoyable stay we had during our trip to southwest England.

We booked in advance and given room 115 the smallest room we have ever stayed in. It was comfortable but the kitchen extractor which was located out-side the window which vibrated the room. I asked for another room but was put down as I was on room only rate and did not have anything in my bracket.. Disappointed. We could...

We booked far in advance to make sure we were given a good room. When we arrived, we were given the smallest room in the building, we had a baby with us which made things worse with the cot being located right in front of the wardrobe. We weren't offered anything bigger even though the same priced rooms were much...

Amazing location and very friendly staff. Professionally greeted with a late checkin. Rooms were very cosy and clean. Shower was a tad awkward to use but common design. Breakfast was a but expensive but a very good selection of fine foods as well as classic full English.

Great location, pretty hotel, room was fine but sold as a luxury, which it isn't. The room was dusty and unloved, cracks in tiles in the bathroom and over all not the cleanest. We had asked for an early check in a month in advance and this did not happen, also we requested a bottle of champagne in the room,...

Perfect location on the Cathedral green. Restaurant has an excellent reputation. While the hotel has every right to charge what the traffic will bear, guests should be aware that expensive interior rooms may look on to an unpleasant array of vents and chimneys. The Michael Caines restaurant was poorly staffed. Food came at random times, served by random staff assigned...

I chose to stay here having visited previously & had a great time, this was not the case 2nd time round. An unclean room with air con so loud it was impossible to leave it on & generally shabby. Poor!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Looking to the future of The Royal Clarence, we have every intention to rebuild the hotel with enormous sympathy.. The 18th-century hotel, said to be one of the oldest in England, was gutted when a blaze spread from an adjacent building on Friday morning. The fire wrecked the inside of the landmark building and left the frontage on the brink of collapse. ... more   less
