Set in the heart of Britain’s Ocean City, the Duke of Cornwall is a stunning period hotel brimming with character and style. Built as Plymouth’s first luxury hotel in 1863, the Duke has been lovingly preserved and enhanced so that its unique Victorian Gothic splendour can still be enjoyed by guests today. The hotel’s 72 rooms are all individually designed with thoughtfully-selected designer wallpapers and vintage furniture, creating a chic look that does justice to the building’s striking architecture. With a range of bedroom sizes and styles available, from comfortable en-suites to indulgently romantic four-poster rooms, there’s accommodation to suit everyone. The Duke’s luxury extends to its impressive culinary offerings. Fine dining is available (for guests and non-guests alike) in the comfort of the hotel’s elegant restaurant. With award winning food and a dynamic team of chefs, its dishes look and taste sensational. Light lunches and a generous choice of drinks are available in the lounge, with its welcoming bar and, in the colder months, a homely log fire. If you’re planning a wedding, party or business event, the Duke is the ideal choice. With a wealth of experience in organising celebrations and group events, a range of room options and a full set of facilities and equipment, the hotel has everything you need to ensure your event runs smoothly. And with the backdrop of the Duke’s stunning decor and features, you can be sure your guests will be impressed, whether the occasion is one of business or pleasure. As well as the merits that await guests within, the Duke also offers a fantastically convenient location in the centre of Plymouth. The hotel is a short walk from the city’s abundance of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as the historic Plymouth Hoe, Sutton Harbour and the Barbican, with their spectacular sea views. And it’s a mere stone’s throw from two of the South West’s finest entertainment venues, the Theatre Royal and Plymouth Pavilions – making the hotel the ideal overnight stop-off or meeting place if you’re catching a show. Whether you’re visiting Plymouth or it’s the city you call home, you’ll find the Duke of Cornwall a pleasure to experience. With its fascinating history, friendly but professional service, and breathtaking style, the Duke is truly a gem in Britain’s Ocean City.

Sadly this hotel has gone well passed it’s sell by date.It must cost a fortune to maintain and with a falling client base it’s further must look very grim.. Our Superior room upgrade was clean but showed it’s age .. We tried eating in the bar . Fish and chips for her that wasn’t brilliant , I had a Ham sandwich cheap ham on sliced factory bread .. Breakfast was similarly underwhelming, low cost ingredients badly cooked and served badly

The staff were very attentive, couldn’t fault them. Bedroom very clean. Location is spot on. Also dog friendly! Car park was full but easily parked on the street no problem. Only negative - The drinks in the end bar weren’t that great, the magners was flat, and the Diet Coke tasted the the smell of dust sort of thing. But would defo return if staying in the area again!

My husband & I stayed a couple of nights at this grand old hotel, we asked for a quiet room and got a quiet room (508). The receptionist was very friendly and welcoming. We were impressed by the art decor - as people have got to realise it’s in keeping with the age of the building. It’s actually been done up very nicely, although there is a lift - my husband and enjoyed walking up the grand old staircase. Our room was a good size, clean and had all the cavities for a comfortable stay. Breakfast and evening meal was served by a hard-working individual KC and his colleagues - this waiter was friendly, professional and a credit to the already hard-working team you have. Breakfast was buffet style for cold items, served with a hot delicious breakfast at your table. Once again the evening meal was not only displayed beautifully on our plates - it was delicious and plentiful and all washed down with a bottle of wine. We live in Cornwall and normally go Tregenna Castle in St.Ives but now we found this little gem we are already planning our 2nd trip!!

Booked on a deal and got an upgrade. The Trip Advisor reviews were a bit mixed but hey. We arrived [12.45 a bit too early!!] and were cheerily and friendly welcomed AND greeted by the LOVELY receptionist Louise. Car park at the rear was empty and FREE. We were allocated room 415 at the top [a suite] 'triple aspect' with stunning views. She got us in very quickly. Louise featured a lot in our stay as she was always on duty it seemed and always so friendly, engaging and most of all helpful. THANK YOU you made it for us. ALL the other staff we met were too. Brilliant 'can do' culture. Breakfast was really good, buffet choice for continental. Hot food freshly cooked to order, bacon was crispy. We had orangey yellow free range eggs/or Scrambled , crispy fried bread [our choice] and crispy coated hash brown. Served very quickly with no delays. We ate dinner in the bar just because the Restaurant opened a bit late for us and enjoyed the Fish and Chips and penne pasta with our wine!!! The 'TIRED' look of the hotel we felt was unkind as the décor/decoration was all fresh brand new you would NOT find a mark, scratch, or loose paint, cracks, or loose wallpaper ANYWHERE in view. Ceilings, Walls to floor. It was decorated in an older style in keeping with its age and lovely old furniture [Piano in the reception whatever next!!] ha ha. Thank you and will book again.

Stayed here for two nights 5 - 7 Nov 21. This is a lovely charming hotel brimming with character & stunning period style. Reception staff friendly & welcoming. We had a lovely evening meal in the restaurant with a helpful & friendly waiter KC who looked after us very well. He & his colleagues work there socks off to ensure you are not waiting around too long for courses. I can recommend the sirloin steak, cooked to perfection & very tasty. We stayed in room 505 which was clean & adequate, although a little on the small side. Cleaning is done on a daily basis with coffee, tea, milk being replenished along with towels & toiletries. Felt covid safe as there is a high level of hygiene. I would highly recommend a stay & shall be returning again in the New Year.
