The Food at this establishment is faultless a new menu implemented today was simply mouth watering when having lunch. Do try the crab soup, the tempura prawns and the lamb I can recommend all items I ate without hesitation. The staff were very helpful and the General Manager was very pleasant and polite as he passed through the restaurant, a extremely smart young man. Looking forward to a return visit.

We stayed here for one night on dinner, bed and breakfast basis. I don’t even know where to start! Maybe with the one good thing…the actual view from the room. We paid for a superior ocean view room and it didn’t disappoint with views. Stunning seaview and the room is lovely. The one star review is literally for the view…and because you can’t give it any less. However, the key card didn’t work, we had a maintenance guy fixing and sealing the windows and doors on the balcony whilst we were in the room and when we could actually go out onto the balcony, all we could smell was cannabis! Then the food. Oh. My. God. Please people, save your money and DO NOT eat here!! Possibly, the worst food in any hotel I have ever stayed, anywhere in the world. And I, seriously, am not even exaggerating. First course was limp lettuce served with the most tasteless piece of ham I have ever eaten. Well, actually, I couldn’t even eat it. My husband only did because he was hungry and he had to shove it in some bread rolls. Then the main. I can’t even believe how horrendous it was. We aren’t food snobs, by any means. ‘Turkey roast’ by all accounts. In reality what arrived was one slice of turkey (I think it was turkey, but who could tell!) on a plate with two roast potatoes…one of which was covered in mould spots!!! When I showed this to the waiter, he came back with two more potatoes and let me swap mine for one of those (I wasn’t allowed both and I actually didn’t want any!) This delicious (!!) dish was served with a side dish of the hardest sprouts I’ve ever tasted and an equally hard serving of cauliflower cheese. Honestly, all that saved the meal was the dessert. Chocolate fudge cake and ice cream, which would be hard for even this (apparently) 4* hotel to get wrong. After the meal we went to the bar for a drink or two to wash it all away. My husband did go and complain about the food to the manager, who offered him a bottle of Prosecco as compensation. We don’t drink Prosecco and, to be honest, we felt that that was far short of what should receive, which is a full refund for the food at least. We got talking to another couple, who have been staying at the hotel for the past few days. They had equally shocking reviews of the food that they have been served each day they have been here, and they can’t wait to go home. We are now waiting to go down for breakfast. I have high hopes that, like the dessert, they shouldn’t be able to get this too wrong….. Now back home. Breakfast was actually not too bad! Hot food and buffet. The manager also apologised before we left and gave us a 30% discount. Unfortunately, this won’t be enough for us ever to return and I will never recommend this hotel to anyone!

Response from Abbie Campbell, Other at The Cumberland Hotel

Dear Mandy M, We are sorry that your stay was so disappointing. We do want all our guests to have an enjoyable experience. Now as most readers to these online reviews will know, there are always two sides to story. There is always an element of exaggeration. Our senior maintenance engineer, knocked on the room door and asked if you would allow him to check something on the balcony, as there was an issue with the room below. You consented, and allowed him. If you were uncomfortable with this, at the time, a very simple ‘Now is not convenient’ would suffice. You did make a complaint with the front desk, hence why we are aware as it was investigated with the engineer. Your comments regarding the food. Unfortunately it is very rare when we have guests who have such a distaste. Our food is fresh, sourced locally where possible, and the Turkey, the genuine Turkey is local. We served 160 meals, the evening in question, no complaint received regarding any of the comments you have accused. We will agree that you did not like the menu and food was not to your taste or standard you are familiar with. We have received compliments, from this actual weekend and night in question. We are pleased our breakfast was not ‘too bad’, but then it is a English Breakfast, and it’s the usual fair of Fried Eggs, Grilled Bacon and continental selection of 4* grade. Again, we are sorry to disappoint.
