The Old Ship Hotel earns praise for its prime location near the beach and city center, making it a hit for those looking to explore local attractions. While the amenities like breakfast and bar receive appreciation from guests, some travelers find the rooms dated and encounter maintenance issues. Opinions about the hotel's value and service vary, with mentions of both positive experiences and areas needing improvement.
The hotel's atmosphere is noted for its lively entertainment, despite some outdated decor and cleanliness concerns. However, the noise level is a common complaint among guests seeking a restful night's sleep.

Detailed Reviews
I came here with my husband for two nights on 10th August. There was no room in the hotel car park so had to queue for around 20 minutes to get into the car park opposite. Parking is £25 a day, be warned. We checked in around 3pm and heard a few customers being told their rooms were not yet ready. Luckily ours was! There’s a one way system in place around the hotel and pens are sterilised for use when filling out the check in forms.
The weather was very hot and as the hotel has no air con it made for an extremely hot and sticky stay. The room had a ceiling fan which rotated so slowly it was pointless being there. We requested a separate fan from reception and they gave us a tower fan which again had no power to it. The window didn’t open very far so there was little we could do to cool the room down. Be aware of this if you are booking in summer. I can imagine at other times of year it wouldn’t be as bad.
We opted not to eat or drink in the hotel but did notice they were taking part in “eat out to help out” and I spotted vegan options on the menu.
The location of the hotel couldn’t be better. You’re right on the seafront and in front of the Lanes. The pier is also only a short walk away.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the covid measures in place seem great. My main issue with the hotel is the need for some modernisation and some sort of cooling for the rooms. Even if the ceiling fans were more effective this would have been something.
I wouldn’t stay here again in the summer months but could be tempted back in much cooler weather for the location.

Thank you Laura F for your very informative and constructive review of our hotel. I am sorry to read your review of our hotel. Whilst we always do our very best to ensure that every stay with us is a pleasant one, sometimes we do miss the occasional point, something that we aim to rectify as soon as we are made aware of. What I will be doing is using your comments to allow the hotel to improve for the future. We are currently progressing with a redecoration programme of some of our rooms to ensure that issues such as what you have mentioned are addressed for the future. I can certainly assure you that at The Old Ship Hotel Brighton we do our upmost to get problems resolved to ensure that future guests do not have to experience the same issues. Again I extend my apologies to you that your stay was not to the standard we hope to offer for every guest with us. We would be delighted to welcome you back in the future to hopefully note the improvements we are making. Kind Regards Daniel Deputy General Manager

This is a very old building which needs updating / urgent repairs . We were in a sea view room which was quite small , needed decorating and the plumbing renewed as it took over 5 minutes to draw hot water for the very weak shower .We stayed when it was very windy and the vent in the bathroom was very noisy all night . The redeeming feature of the establishment is the staff . Our first stop was at the garage where the guy who greeted us there was very pleasant and most helpful , staying with our car on double yellows whilst we booked in and returned for our luggage etc . The reception young ladies were bright and cheerful and answered all our questions .We ate in The Wardroom on our first evening and were greeted by Sonia who was also very pleasant and had a very happy disposition . The food was well presented and well cooked with the exception of the thrice cooked chunky chips which could have done with another cooking as their middle was hard and quite raw . Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and Gill is probably the jewel in the crown at the hotel , she is remarkable .

We arrived for our Christmas break on the Monday with lots of bags and a dog the staff were very helpful in moving our bags to the lift area. Our first thoughts of the were wonderful (room 414) but very very warm, radiators off and windows open resolved that! That level of warmth was felt throughout the hotel which was uncomfortable for me but given the other guests would likely appreciate the warmth I mopped my brow and looked for the coldest areas in the hotel. We kept our dog with us at all times for meals so took them in the lovely bar area which was our choice but it did feel at first that we were the poor relation often having to get the attention of the waiting staff to ask where our meals were. By Christmas Day I was quite sceptical about how quickly we would be served given we were told we could arrive from 1pm, we made short work of the champagne reception and bought our own bottle to keep us merry. Having been assured we wouldn't be forgotten it was over an hour until we made our approach to staff after seeing another table with a dog be set up and receive their starters. Richard was our saviour on Christmas day! He made sure our meals were out in good time and really went the extra mile which we thought was lacking from the early part of our stay. He's a top lad and deserves a shout out. On Boxing day we sat closer to the restaurant entrance which worked better for receiving meals in good time apart from dessert. Again we waited until we spotted Richard who had been in the kitchen all day and we asked if he could save us and retrieve dessert. Sure enough he delivered on dessert and without him and a lovely lady called Sienna the service isn't what we would have expected. Definitely required better organisation on service when not in the restaurant but the staff where more than helpful when prompted and food I can not fault!! The resident singer was great but we didn't do much of the other entertainment just because of how warm the place was. It's in a cracking location, you may need the ear plugs provided as I found out that some guy was looking for Dave at 2:30am which tickled me at the time. Ear plugs in and I don't care where Dave had gone. All that said, don't let anything negative I've said put you off, just be aware and there are plenty of plus points which make it a great place to stay

Have been to Brighton many times and stayed at other more expensive seafront hotels.
This one is in an excellent position for the Brighton Centre - yards away. This deal we got through Groupon with an additional 15 % Groupon promotional discount B & B, late checkout and a welcome drink! Good deal by anybody’s standards.
The hotel staff were helpful and friendly. Room was in need of a bit of tlc did not have a great view at all but bed was comfy and fulfilled its purpose for the night.
Breakfast was comprehensive good selection and well presented more than adequate.
The lounges downstairs were clean and bright and you could sit looking out onto the promenade which was both relaxing and restful.
We were more than happy here and would definitely return.
This was an excellent value for money deal.

I would like to take this opportunity to profusely apologise for wasting the Duty Managers time by sharing some disappointing truths about room 123 @ The Old Ship Hotel. I’m sincerely sorry that I did not appear at the reception desk at some random time while you were on duty after a horrific night, to discuss our thoughts. I reframe from saying horrific nights sleep as that would be grossly misleading, as sleep was definitely not in the equation. Whilst paying a £60 per night upgrade to a Seaview twin room, I can only apologise for not having the foresight to realise that the upgrade came complimentary of not only traffic noise, which was our initial concern, but the continuous noise from the bar and outside seating area directly below, the taxi rank 10m from our window, the emergency sirens, the member of staff cleaning the terrace at the crack of dawn and the road sweeper….. just to mention a few. Had the room not been like a sauna, the windows would have not had to have been open all night. I would further like to apologise for not keeping the curtains closed prior to our check in, as the sauna effect could have been avoided. The boiling hot towel rail and the low speed ceiling fan were further upgrades that I didn’t anticipate, in which I would like to thank you, as these were a serious added bonus.
You made reference to people smoking under our room, which was not the case and I’m now feeling really deprived. Also that you were not willing to compensate us, which was not something that we requested. On the contrary, we feel like we should be paying you a further upgrade rate for the lack of our transparency as to our expectations.
You mentioned that you could have supplied us with ear plugs and an additional fan. Clearly you can only speak in the past tense as these comforts were not offered nor have they arrived for our further 2 nights in your Hotel.
Finally, our 2 small dogs are staying as paid guests (at an additional charge £10 x 2 per night),but are expected to share one small dog bed and one bowl. They were embarrassed with this situation, as they haven’t even had a first date yet. They did however appreciate the welcome letter from the General Manager. Woof woof! Regardless of the dogs, the room will not be cleaned during our stay due to Covid, so maybe you could find a way to justified further additional charges, or I could potentially stay a few extra hours to help with some housekeeping?
On a serious note, although the room had less than adequate supply of toiletries, towels and a working remote for the tv, your staff were very quick to rectify the matter. Anna & Alice should be commended for their high level of customer service. Thank you!

Stayed two nights at The Old Ship Sunday/Monday for a short break and a birthday getaway. The hotel is in a great location right on the seafront close to The Lanes and loads of bars, restaurants and other attractions. This is an old building so the layout isn’t like more modern hotels but utterly charming, classic seaside style. The bar and reception rooms were comfortable and the atmosphere very pleasant enhanced by the universally friendly and attentive staff. Our room was compact ( as one might expect in a building of this age) but clean and comfortable if in need of a revamp of the decor (one section of the building is in the process of having new windows and, I presume redecoration so I guess this will happen in due course) We had dinner one night in The Wardroom restaurant- though quiet on Sunday night the food was excellent as was the service, likewise breakfast was very good with a lot of choice. Someone on the staff had picked up it was a birthday trip and we were delighted to be gifted some cakes in our room and glasses of fizz with afternoon tea the next day - all without asking, a reflection of the warm welcome we received. While not the plushest of hotels we’ve ever stayed in the atmosphere and treatment by all of the staff was first class, a great stay and will happily return.

The Old Ship Hotel is prime located on the Brighton sea-front and within a couple of minutes of the historic Lanes & iconic Pier, so it is wonderfully situated. The staff on reception are also kind, friendly and welcoming.
The problems came, for me, inside of the hotel itself:
The room was £120 per night. For this price I expect to feel the room is fresh. However, the rooms and corridors did not feel like they had been renovated since the 1960s or 70s and the decor felt stale e.g old carpets. The old water system of the hotel struggled, as I personally could not access hot water from it for the first 24 hours of my 2 day stay. An example: outside my room on floor #1 there was a chest of draws. I wasn't sure what this was doing in the corridor so I opened a drawer. It had been filled with old rubbish from people's rooms. Not sure the last time someone had cleaned it or even checked it. I expect a lot more for £120, and I felt a bit fleeced. I've stayed in Spa hotels in Kent for 10-15% cheaper which are far older, and yet more fresh, modern, airy and functional. Breakfast was not included.
I won't be coming back.

Paid £586 for 3 nights and had high hopes after looking on their own website. Sadly, The Old Ship is in need of a lot of work to bring it up to standard. The manager listened to my disappointment and moved us to an alternative room but there was no difference. The whole place needs to be overhauled to feel like 4 stars. I’d say this was 3 stars at best. We felt ripped off. There was nothing deluxe about our Deluxe Double room. One small shower gel and shampoo, one bath towel and one hand towel (should we share??), tired, shabby furniture and carpet in need of a thoroughly deep clean, and our sleep spoiled by the excessively loud sound system of the beach bar opposite until 3am each night. Yes, 3am. Thankfully, my AirPods acted as good earplugs thanks to their noise cancellation.
We won’t return here unless we hear it has had a FULL refurbishment. Even though the location is great (except opposite the outdoor nightclub) I’d rather go somewhere else for nearly £200 per night, room only. I feel so sorry for the nice staff who must get a lot of these honest reviews.

We booked this weekend away some weeks ago. My friend and myself hadn't seen each other in months.
We arrived, and on first appearances thought 'this looks nice' . Sadly less than 10 minutes later we were left disappointed. Yes, we had booked a room via Wowcher, but still at a considerable cost. What we didn't expect was a room that not only smelt of mould, but had visible mould - nothing like the website pictures, even the standard room on the website was way better. We rang down, but the systems weren't working, so we took all our bags and headed back down to reception. We couldn't stay in that room 1 minute longer, especially as my friend has asthma.
Some 10 minutes later, we were given a non mouldy room - but at a cost of £30 over 2 nights. So we paid. But later on we thought, hang on, why are we paying extra just to sleep in a safer environment??? We brought this up with Phil the duty manager via email. From Phil's written reply left through the door, we should think ourselves lucky we got an upgrade with a discount. Great customer service Phil - way to go!!!
Anyway, that sort of customer service wouldn't make us return. We just wanted a nice weekend away, without mould and without attitude. Sadly none were achieved.

We took the train as parking was £40 a day and first come first served basis
Stay somewhere else. The only thing that was good was the breakfast and breakfast staff. Shoddy hotel - very run down. Needs updating in many ways.
We booked a deluxe sea view double room and it was very nice and the sea view was magnificent. Breakfast was great. I don't think the bathroom was renovated but it was in keeping with the type of hotel. Plenty of towels. The staff are all very hard working and nothing is too much trouble.
