We were supposed to stay at this hotel for just one night, 2 rooms, both booked 4weeks (approx) before our stay. Luckily I rang before we set off (4.5 hour drive!) to be told our rooms have been cancelled with no real explanation. They said they have tried ringing me this week and left a message - god knows who they rang but it wasn’t me. No email about cancelling either. Will most definitely NOT be booking anything ever again with this company and will stick to Premier Inn.

10 of us travelled here on Friday to stay 2 nights, 2 of the people travelling with us received an email the day before to say that their room had been cancelled, had they of been contacted to see if other arrangements could of been made would of been the right way to go about it, as ther was 10 of us and 1 way of transport we all went anyway, luckily 1 person with us had a room of his own he gave up his room to the father and daughter that ther room was cancelled and he stayed on sofa bed in different room, after all that was sorted we went down to the hotel bar for drinks, I then went outside for a smoke to be approached by 2 men foreign nationals asking for a ciggeratte, I had rolled 1 and left tobacco tin inside he said give me ciggeratte please I am in isolation then alarm bells started ringing and went back inside said to rest of the people with us and hotel staff, it made sense then these people had been brought into the country and the hotel had cancelled rooms for the government to put people here to stay, basicly take a good payment from the government and stuff those people that stay here every year! These people supposed to be isolating should not of been allowed to leave their rooms and get anywhere near contact with myself or anyone else! Someone with us was vulnerable if cought covid and for that reason we left the hotel and went down into Colchester for food and drinks then we all went to our rooms around 6pm untill next morning when we left straight away back that night late and checked out at 6am Sunday morning! We always use this hotel for our annual trip to Ipswich and will be looking for a different hotel for next years trip

Let me start off by saying that we have stayed in this hotel a few times before. We regularly take the travel by ferry from Harwich International Port and the Holiday Inn Express is conveniently located and offers a basic breakfast. We are planning to travel from Harwich again soon and I booked a room at the Holiday Inn Express for the night before. About a month later, I received an email saying my room was cancelled. That seemed strange so I called the hotel to confirm this is legit. I was told that it was indeed the case as a private comoany had booked the hotel for several days or weeks (I can't remember). The member of staff I spoke to did not seem all too happy about the arrangement and was very apologetic and friendly. Obviously it wasn't their fault. However, I must ask myself what kind of dodgy business practice this is? They cancelled my room because someone made a better offer? Obviously this was incredibly annoying and we now had to opt for a more expensive hotel further away form the port. Luckily Hotels.com offered a voucher to make up for the difference in price but I am still very disappointed in how little Holiday Inn Express values its customers. Needless to say, we won't be returning and will look for different hotel to stay with, ideally one that does not operate like Ebay.

Booked 2 nights here for £146. On arrival we noticed that the area absolutely stinks of raw sewage, god knows why because there isn't a water treatment plant anywhere around. Friendly lady on reception checked us in to our double room which, at first glance, looked beautiful. However, when it came to relaxing on the bed we sank straight into the middle. Looked at the mattress - it was indeed a Hypnos bed but was obviously about the same age as me (41) the bed base was so stained you would think a body had decomposed on it. Terrible nights sleep on the first night. Breakfast was awful. Rock hard bacon that had been sitting out for ages, the sausage tasted like nothing else I'd ever eaten - absolutely horrid. Second night we tried the sofa bed, mattress was stained to buggery and paper thin so that was no good. Thought I'd try a coffee on the second morning but that tasted like it costs a pound a bucket - so cheap and nasty. Left it at the machine. I am gonna look into getting a refund because £146 is a lot of money for me and my husband and this stay certainly wasn't worth that.
