We stayed at Becketts just for the night after going to the theatre in Portsmouth. It’s a little tucked away gem in Southsea. The host was lovely, the room was beautiful with a super comfy bed and the breakfast was exceptionally good - possibly the best I’ve had!! We will definitely be staying at Becketts again!

On the whole the hotel was nice although marred by some poor experiences. Mix up of payment on check in which initially being over charged (this was sorted). Apparently there is no hot breakfast served on a Tuesday, despite the hotel's website not mentioning this (nor Hotels.com). We were presented with a small bag with an apple, a piece of flapjack and a small bottle of orange juice. This is absolugely NOT acceptable as a replacement breakfast. I recently had a lot better 'bagged breakfast' from a Travelodge. There was no fridge in room either. The ensuite included a shower which sprayed the whole bathroom with water. With the floor being polished slate, this made for an extremely dangerous 'ice rink' when inevitably wet. It's just waiting for someone to hurt themselves. I believe this has been mentioned in previous reviews. The duty manager didn't seem overly fussed when I mentioned that I was extremely disappointed with all of this. The evening meal we had there was very good, and the while vibe of the place was great.

Stayed 2 nights (Sunday, Monday). If you enjoy your cooked breakfast, whilst on holiday, don’t stay here, because they don’t serve breakfast on Mondays & Tuesdays, as the restaurant is closed. And, as far as we could see, there were no staff on duty in the building either. Instead, for breakfast you get 2 brown paper bags, in your room, containing an orange drink (x2), an apple (x2), an orange (x2), and a soft bar (x2), which was revolting! They don’t make up the room on these days. When we asked them about it, they said, ‘it’s in the small print’. We had an ‘upgraded room’, we were told. No 3, at the back of the building, overlooking the industrial waste bins. The council emptied the bins at 7.15am on Monday morning! The bathroom was a wet room – aptly named. There were 2 ways to shower. Using the ceiling rose, or using a very small handheld shower unit. Obviously, we chose the ceiling rose. Bad choice! Water got everywhere; well, it was a wet room! The bathmat was soaking wet, so couldn’t use it. The toilet area was soaking, even the toilet roll was wet through. We put the wet one by the open window and it dried out overnight! There was a safe in the cupboard; unfortunately, it didn’t work. Keyed in an appropriate code and it stayed locked for about five seconds! We were told it needed a new battery. There is a 50-inch television in the room. Too large for the size of the room, compounded by the reception, which was variable. The picture kept breaking up. Never again.

If you're thinking of staying in Southsea, I would certainly recommend this charming boutique hotel. Easy walk from there to the sea front and many sights. The room we had was lovely. The hotel staff are superbly trained, professional and helpful. Their breakfast was divine. There are parking meters nearby, and if you have the RinGo app, it makes a huge difference. We look forward to going back to Becketts.
