Run down, cold, dirty, strange smell and a shower that's extremely weak and is luke-warm at best. This hotel has nothing going for it whatsoever with the only redeeming feature being its proximity to the town centre and travel links. Avoid at all costs

I stayed with a group of friends for three nights and it did job! It’s a very basic hotel that could do with dragging into the 21st century decor-wise; but it was extremely clean, the beds were comfortable and it had a decent bar! If that’s all you need, then this place won’t disappoint. The only negative was the amount of noise from the main road and the pubs across the road - but can’t really be blamed on the hotel!

Room Tip: If you can get a room that’s not at the front, you’ll likely have quieter nights sleep!

We stayed here for 3 nights when visiting Hereford. The hotel was ok, fairly cheap to stay, not the best place I have visited, but it was fine. The beds were really comfy and the rooms a decent size. The bathroom wasn't very clean however! The hotel doesn't seem to have a very good reputation in the area. Several people were unimpressed when we said we were staying there. I assume that is due to the bar side of things rather than the hotel though. The bar was only open for the first day that we stayed as there were electrical problems on the other days. When we came to check out, there was no one around so we just had to leave the key at reception. Probably wouldn't stay again if I could find somewhere at a decent price as it wasn't that clean, but if I couldn't find anywhere else I would probably stay again!

I really don't know where to start. We were 5 grown men on a 4 day cycling tour around the Wye valley and had "accidentally" booked into the Merton Hotel for a night (my fault). When we arrived we all said "This place must be closed, it looke like a bomb site". There was a scrawled note on the door which said "If you want to get in, call this mobile number". What a welcome! You could almost hear the "Battling Banjos" theme tune from within, as the guy who eventually openedthe door was full on Deliverance. He took us and out bikes round to the rear yard which was the most filthy scene I had seen in ages, including a dozen plastic 5-gallon tubs of black, sickening cooking fat. To our relief, the first thing he said was "We are not doing any breakfasts at the moment, there's a Wetherspoons across the road". I never thought I would be relieved to hear that sentence.. As we entered the "hotel", we gagged at the stench of the place - the furniture, the curtains, the stair carpets. It STANK BEYOND BELIEF. Then we noticed they were decorating the place, and we discovered they were hosting a 50th Borthday party that night. To our horror, we were told that they had a a 2am license. When I told the owner that he really ought to have told us about this before we arrived, he said "You won't hear anything in the rooms, and if you decide to leave we won't be refunding you". The rooms were exactly as we expected (appalling) so we left fo go for dinner as soon as possible, When we arrived back at 10pm, there were already several drunken bodies strewn across the place, oddly two of them were dressed in Superman costumes. Two of our party left at once, and true to his word, the owner refused to refund them. The loud thumping music and screaming & shouting, and drunken fighting kept us all awake until well beyond 2:30. At 7am we went to MacDonalds for breakfast and it was the highlight of our stay at the Merton Hotel. If you ever decide to stay here, you deserve everything you get. Whatever you do, do not stay here,

Booked this hotel through an agency, under no deposit, fully cancellable, no charge agreement. Within minutes and weeks ahead of the the stay, the full amount was debited from my bank account , @£550. The next day I cancelled as circumstances had changed anyway . From then on it was a battle to get money back with the hotel twice saying they had instigated a refund- they had not - they effectively used my bank details to withdraw funds from my bank account. After no success after 6 weeks the hotel told the agent they were in financial difficulty and still did not refund. Fortunately , after 6 weeks the agent, booking.com refunded my money, not the hotel
