#1 of 9 hotels in Hereford
Tucked away in a quiet area of the historic city of Hereford, Castle House is a Grade II listed boutique hotel owned and run by a local farming family. The hotel has 24, individually designed, luxury suites and bedrooms, eight of which are in Number 25, a Georgian Townhouse a few steps from the hotel. The hotel is famous for its award-winning restaurant. Under Head Chef, Gabor Katona, the menus are seasonal and much of the produce comes from the owner's Ballingham Hall farm's extensive kitchen garden. A true Farm to Fork story here. Gabor's Saturday Night Tasting Menu evenings are the hot ticket in town and Castle House is THE place to go for a traditional Afternoon Tea with Trumpers fairtrade tea-leaves! Castle House is the perfect place to base yourself to explore the Wye Valley and the outstandingly beautiful Herefordshire countryside. The city is also a must-see, with its magnificent medieval cathedral, home to the world-famous Mappa Mundi and Chained Library.

After our original plans were cancelled because of a storm The Staff and management of the hotel were brilliant accommodating us all at very short notice and we enjoyed coffee and Prosecco in lovely surroundings. They couldn’t have been more helpful. Some very happy memories were made to add to the long awaited wedding ceremony later in the month. Many thanks Rosalind Butler

We dined here last night and had the Tasting Menu. It was fantastic, so many different tastes and dishes that we had never had before. The setting was lovely with a log fire. The staff were exceptional and Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you to the staff that tended to all of our needs : Claire, Tom, Garrick, Lucia and Kitty what a wonderful team and ofcourse not forgetting the fantastic Chef and who ever else was in the kitchen for such scrumptious and excellent tasting food. We shall be back as soon as we possibly can. Thank you Lyny and Billy xx

The hotel’s ethos is farm to Fork and you can’t fault it. We had the tasting menu on Saturday night and the food was exquisite. Hard to judge which course was the best as they were all different and equally delicious. We had opted for the wine pairings so that was a delight as well. The staff are lovely and helpful. They really know what they are doing here, may have to come back for a tea as they looked very tempting…

Went again to their Saturday evening tasting menu. 4 out of 5 courses were pretty good but not excellent. The other - mashed oxtail under a piece of toast. I don't know what they were thinking with that one. The staff are friendly and do the best they can but lack class or polish. I don't think there's much training on offer. The receptionist was drafted in to bring some of the dishes out and made it feel anything but special This is a management issue. Not enough training or oversight. Part of the charm of this type of evening is that it should feel special rather than procedural. Some finesse is required. The tables are arrayed around the edge of the dining room. In the middle is a big square column and two empty tables, making the centrepiece of the room just look like a bit of a storage area. Come on management, just attend to it. It'd take 10 minutes. A set of four themed, framed pictures on each face of the column; pull the tables a foot away from the column either side and dress them with some dried flowers or suchlike and you have yourself a lovely dining room with a centrepiece. It's the same story in the conservatory. Overlit and characterless. No dressing on the windows so at night they're big and black and yawning. , There's two houseplants bunged in to try and take the edge off the featurelessness. Token effort that predictably fails. The ceiling is a mess of beams and cheap lighting. They might claim to be going for the Scandi look but it just looks really bland. Come on management. Get off your backside and help out the chef and the staff and give Hereford something to be really proud of.

Had a very relaxing 3 night stay. The room was well appointed, very comfortable and there was a fridge with some fresh milk in, nice touch. Breakfast was delicious and filling, l can’t comment on the evening meals as they were fully booked for the 3 nights we were there, so the food must be good then. The hotel staff are friendly and professional. There’s a handy car park as well. The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Hereford.
