I just spent my birthday at St Michael's Manor and we had a wonderful time. I rang up to check on the booking beforehand and that the champagne we'd ordered would be in the room, and when I got there it was all perfect. Beautiful hotel, lovely room, the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. They really looked after us....

I recently hosted a business event at the Hotel and stayed overnight with my family. I have to say that all of the staff went over and above the call of duty in facilitating my often awkward requests. The rooms were beautifully appointed (I stayed in two different ones) and to the highest standard. The food was excellent, breakfast amazing...

We stayed over on a Sunday night for a 70th birthday, where we also had an afternoon cream tea. Our rooms were great, although slightly on the smaller side compared to hotels where we have stayed before. The afternoon tea was great with champagne and then followed up by sitting outside around the lake in the sun. Our evening meal...

Free and easy parking in the middle of old St Albans. Excellent service from the staff, 100% - nothing was any trouble. They wanted to help you whenever you met them. The best shower of any hotel I have stayed in. Quiet and peaceful. Old world charm, set on a lovely estate, with a lake and ducks. Even in the...

My wife and I went away to the hotel for a birthday celebration just after the Christmas celebrations for a quiet and peaceful time and we got it. I need to eat gluten and dairy free food and was accommodated without fuss. The staff were helpful and friendly and the room was very pleasant indeed. The grounds are well worth...

I arrived full of expectations but left rather disappointed. The menu for this special day was unimaginative and bland with the portions minute. My waiter insisted the fish was sea bass: It was cod (the menu said so) and was not aware of which side my side plate sat.I am afraid the pleasant dining area and quite fantastic grounds do...

Over the years have tried this local hotel several times and have always come away feeling somewhat under impressed and over-charged. On the plus side, the staff are pleasant but not hyper-efficient and the venue is lovely, especially if the sun is out. My sister held her wedding here recently and all went smoothly and all the guests were complimentary....

Yesterday evening we made a second visit in this month. So the title of this review underlines the quality of the service ,décor and food quality. Even the coffee was excellent, full of taste and hot. Why do so many places serve indifferent coffee ?

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This magnificent town-house hotel, set in five acres of beautiful English country gardens with lake, is remarkably close to the city centre. The Newling Ward family converted the 500 year-old building in 1965 and continue to own and run the hotel. The 30 bedrooms are individually styled, with many overlooking the lake and gardens, and the award-winning orangery style restaurant shares the same views. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, bar snacks, cream teas and dinner served in a choice of dining areas. ... more   less
