Canterbury Cathedral Lodge is often celebrated for its tranquil atmosphere and comfortable rooms, although some guests find the decor lacking in inspiration. The stunning cathedral views and modern conveniences in the rooms compensate for their limited size, according to some visitors. The hotel's prime location, within reach of local attractions and offering garden views and Cathedral access, is a highlight for many.
Guests have called out the impeccable cleanliness and powerful showers in the modern bathrooms. Reviewers also note the value for money provided by the Lodge, with complimentary entry to nearby attractions and a delicious breakfast that regularly receives compliments. Service is generally recognized as warm and helpful, despite occasional lapses.

Detailed Reviews
Attending a family lunch party, we decided to stay at the Lodge the night before. Our expectations were not raised to high as we had booked a room in the Burgate building, However, our expectations were exceeded in every way from moment we arrived. We were greeted by a lovely young lady at reception who couldn't have been more helpful and shown to our room 302. It had views of the Cathedral and was quite large with a sofa, 2 chairs, and desk as well as the double bed. The bathroom had a bath instead of shower (much appreciated by the wife) and the room was tastefully decorated, exceptionally clean and fresh. parking was arranged in a nearby carpark and all done electronically. The 'Full English' breakfast was filling and very tasty. As we had to leave our room by 11.00, we were allowed to leave our baggage at reception whilst we attended the lunch party, the food and service at which was superb. A word of warning to anybody visiting Canterbury for the first time, the number of homeless people living on the street (and this was mid January) was a real eye opener and also one felt a little bit intimidated walking around at night or early morning. The amount of litter in Canterbury itself, and on the roadsides in Kent was appalling and does not do the county or city any favours.

Dear Reviewer It is a pleasure to find that your stay exceeded expectations and you were greeted with a warm welcome. We have shared your kind comments with the rest of the Lodge team, who take great pleasure in sharing our special location and we are delighted that this was reflected in your experience. Homlessness is unfortunately an issue that is found in most towns and cities and we do support charities such as Porchlight which help homeless and vulnerable people. I do hope we are able to welcome you back to the Lodge if you return to Canterbury. With kind regards Joanne Thompson

Located within the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral this is a special place to stay. Room was well appointed with everything you need. The real treat are the views of the Cathedral and the access included as part of your stay. Breakfast was delicious. The location is also minutes from historic Canterbury and all of its charm and history. Hotel restricts access after 9pm and effectively closes access after 11pm due to its location within the Cathedral grounds. Hotel is hard to find so check their website ahead of travel for detailed directions. Parking overnight on site was ÂŁ6 and needed to be pre booked.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. On behalf of the team at the Cathedral Lodge, we were so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the superb location and wonderful views of the Cathedral from your bedroom window. Please accept our apologies, we should have explained at check-in that overnight hotel guests can re-access the Cathedral grounds anytime during the evening, with no time restrictions. Guests are required to ring the doorbell to the left of the main gate and our Cathedral constables will allow entry on seeing a guest’s hotel pass. I do hope we are able to welcome you back to the Cathedral Lodge in the future. With Kind Regards Sandra

Cathedral lodge hotel is situated in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral, offering views of the beautiful church from every angle. The hotels rooms are small but adequate, with all the usual facilities one would expect. Some items such as tissues, iron etc have been removed, but should you require these just ask. A couple of points to note, whilst this hotel is expertly placed for exploring old Canterbury, it’s location brings it draw backs. Such as the cathedral chimes beginning each day around eight until ten, and there is VERY Limited Bookable parking within the grounds, failing this we used the Sturry road park and ride £3.50 for each 24hrs as a posed to £8 for 12hrs closer to town. WiFi is free throughout, tea, and coffee in the rooms, along with shower gel, TV and hair dryer. Free entry to the cathedral is also included in your stay, just show your pass, but must be booked at the moment. Breakfast is operated on a booked time slot, and comprises of a choice of full English, eggs Benedict, and many others, plus variations such as scrambled egg on toast. There is also a big selection of continental, all orders are cooked to order. Would stay again, the reception staff friendly and very helpful, in fact all staff were great.

Responded 8 Jun 2021
Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. You are quite correct that the Cathedral bells do chime briefly, at the earliest time of 8.00am, which is for morning prayers. There are no times of long, continuous chiming in the early morning, however. We do have a number of bookable parking spaces in the Cathedral grounds. Once these are taken there is an option of a 24 hour council car park ticket, at a discounted rate, that can be purchased from us. The additional option of the park and ride car parks are also available, dependent upon personal convenience. Thank you for your kind comments about our staff, and I do hope we can welcome you back again soon. Kind regards Richard Moppett General Manager

We had a great stay at this hotel. Everyone that we interacted with were so friendly. My partner accidentally booked a twin room instead of a double and the staff had no problem in quickly changing the bed around into a double bed.
The facilities were great with glass bottles available in the hallway for you to fill up with water when needed. The beds were comfy and there was a great selection of tea/coffee/hot chocolate in the rooms. The hotel also gives out so much informations with discounts at certain restaurants and cafes.
Breakfast was great and had a big selection of meals to choose from. The staff were really friendly too.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Canterbury
Ps I would strongly avoid using the American sweet shop opposite the Cathedral Gates. The do not put prices on items which means you get to the till and get a big surprise. They don’t give receipts and it seems they change their prices depending. Try other sweet shops before using this one as you can find many of the sweets for almost half the price.

My friend and I recently had the pleasure to stay at this super hotel. Without exception the staff were friendly and helpful. If we asked for anything, then our requests were met without question and with efficiency.
Our room looked out on the cathedral and gardens, a beautiful view, very peaceful and tranquil. Despite the recent restrictions with Covid, our room was pleasant with a good hospitality tray, with Fair Trade products. The shower was hot, easy to use and powerful, a pleasant surprise as many have poor pressure.
The hotel is situated in a great position, it is easy to walk round the historic part of Canterbury , with many restaurants, tea rooms and historic buildings to visit.
We had plenty of choice at breakfast, and again the produce was good quality.
We had an evening meal once during our stay and thought the price was very good and again the quality of the food was excellent.
I can not think of one thing that wasn't good and my only regret was that I didn't stay longer. Thanks to all the staff.

The Cathedral Lodge is a fine place to stay. It has the feel of a retreat or a five star university . The rooms aren't huge but are comfortable and you can park more or less outside in a city where parking is at a premium. The location is, of course, the prime advantage. Drawing our curtains revealed Canterbury Cathedral in all its glory was a great way to start the day. The breakfast was first class. The only slight issue we had was that, on day I had a very early start and was promised some fruit which never materialised. Otherwise excellent.

This hotel is all about the views and locations and it doesn't disappoint on either of these. It's so beautiful to look out of the window and see the Cathedral and with seating in the windows a spent a lot of time just enjoying this amazing view and being able to enjoy the sounds of choirs singing and the bells rining it was so peaceful.
The hotel room its self is compact but has everything you would need and is kept very clean and is of a lovely fresh design. There is a private garden in the hotel which is very peaceful and gives great views of the Cathedral. Breakfast at the hotel was lovely, wonderful choice of different foods and the service was very friendly and fast. The hotel also gives you free entry into the Cathedral and offers discounted food at different local restaurants which we used and were very pleased with. Its nice to see the local community supporting one another. It can be a little tricky to fine the hotel via car so I suggest really looking into how to get in and out via car as it changes at different times of the day. Parking on siite is also limited so book as soon as possible as its a lot easier to park on site.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review and detailed feedback. It was a pleasure to read you enjoyed your stay with us. As Canterbury Cathedral is set within walled precincts, you are quite correct to point out it can be tricky to find us on your first visit. We do take care to send detailed directions, including street photographs, to make sure guests can locate us. I very much recommend guests take the time to review the directions before starting their journey. We are very happy to help further with location assistance. I do hope you can stay with us again in the future. Kind regards Richard Moppett General Manager

Canterbury Cathedral Lodge was a good choice , offering something a little unique. This boutique hotel is situated within the precincts of the cathedral, with most rooms, certainly mine, having views overlooking it. The Lodge is a newish build, sympathetically done, but not pretending to be ancient. My room was simply but solidly fitted out, slightly austere & functional, but perfectly pleasant nonetheless. Everything was pristine, super neat, with plus points including ample sockets, comfortable bed, smart flat screen tv, tea/coffee making, & a fridge. Toiletries were minimal, just shower gel. I noted a previous reviewer reported experiencing noise from his room which overlooked the street, this wasn’t the case in my cathedral view room, indeed it was a cocoon of total peace & quiet. Entry into the cathedral is complimentary for hotel guests, a saving of £14 for a regular adult. Residents also enjoy the bonus of having the precincts to themselves after the Cathedral closes, enabling tourist free photos, plus, the joy of soaking up the grounds in tranquility. This was especially atmospheric late at night. Additionally, there is a rather lovely garden overlooking the cathedral, exclusive to Lodge guests. Staff were friendly & helpful at reception, & during breakfast service. This is the only meal provided on-site, there isn’t a restaurant as such, though I believe they can cater for pre-arranged groups. I didn’t have a cooked meal at breakfast, but it’s a nice menu of a la carte dishes, including Eggs Benedict & the like, & service was excellent, the sunny dining room a delight. There isn’t a bar, but drinks, alcoholic & non, can be purchased via reception, & there is a cafe within the cathedral grounds, open during daytime trading hours.

Comfortable rooms located within the Cathedral grounds. Offer a great outdoor breakfast. Hotel is modern and has excellent Covid-19 precautions. Rooms are comfortable and we had a fine view of the Cathedral. Parking is charged and limited so needs to be pre-booked and is very secure being within the security protected grounds of the Cathedral. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Do not do evening meals but is central to all the restaurants and have discount arrangements with a number of them.
