I had made a telepone booking for a table for 2 at 1pm in the restuarant for Mother's Day. When we arrived at 12:50pm we saw that there was a set menu for the occasion but our intention was to have the carvery. The moment I spoke to the waitress at the entrance, the whole experience went on to be overshadowed by her attitude. I gave my details and was snapped at that it couldn't possibly be the case that I'd booked for 1pm as the day's sittings were at noon or 2pm. When my reaction was of surprise, she looked at her bookings sheet and confirmed that there was no booking in my name. Confused, embarrassed and disappointed I once again asserted that I had indeed booked for 1pm on 19th March. My poor mum was standing there as we had this awkward conversation (which I've abridged here.) At this point she picked up the bookings sheet and said 'I shouldn't show you this but look!'. I said that she didn't need to show me as she had made it quite clear. At this point my mum asked me if at least I had evidence of calling them to make the booking. I scrolled through my call log and found the call I had made on 9th February. There was only one reason I would have phoned and that was to make a booking. Although this couldn't prove what I had asked for, it was obvious that that would have been the purpose of my call. There then followed some conversation between me, the original waitress, my mum and another waitress who was trying to come up with a solution as opposed to her colleague who was hostile and confrontational. Unfortunately the reasonable waitress was spoken over by original one who finally offered us a table that we would need to leave by 2pm. Given it was now around 1.05pm I expressed concern that we would have enough time to enjoy our meal; if we'd wanted fast food we would have gone to McDonalds. I consulted my mum who looked uncomfortable yet said we should stay as it was unlikely we'd find anywhere else. In the background, the waitress was still talking and denying my booking. At this point I turned and said to her 'I don't think I can stay. You're very rude'. This made no impact however my mum interjected with the suggestion we could eat in the bar. Unbelievably this was met with approval and we took our seats at a table. The rude waitress took our intial order ( we had to have the set 2 or 3 three courses which happily did include the carvery option) but we were attended to for the rest of the meal by other staff who were polite and friendly. There are no complaints about the meal itself. Having had the manager voluntarily pointed out by another waitress, my mother approached him before we settled our higher than originally anticipated bill. His response to say the very least was disinterest. At best it was obvious that he didn't believe that the booking had been made and then he acquiesced that it may have been written down for the wrong date. He said, by way of resolving our complaint he would 'talk to her'. We paid our bill and, as we left, he said he wanted to 'apologise again' (he hadn't apologised at first!) and reiterated he would talk to her however his tone and smile indicated that his sentiments weren't genuine. Given that it was meal for a special occasion which had been tainted by this error, I don't think it would have been unreasonable for the drinks (sparkling water and Pepsi) to have been on the house as a gesture of good will - but no. The service given by that member of staff who, apparently is in a supervisary role, and the manager fell short of the customer service I would expect and it is unlikely we will visit again which is a shame as we have always had a good experience over the years.

We went here for a meal for my sons birthday and my daughter and I had the carvery and when we went to get it the chef said that the turkey was dry and it was also the vegetables looked like they had been sitting there for quite a while, they need to replenish the carvery a bit more so it looks appetising . We paid a lot of money for the meal only to be left disappointed.

Good location to walk into the city. It was a bonus to have parking so close to the city. We will definately be back on our next visit to Canterbury. Thank you Victoria Hotel.

It’s hard to find anything negative to say about The Victoria Hotel. All the staff are welcoming, friendly, interested in their guests, and super-efficient. Our room was well-furnished and immaculate, breakfast was particularly good - both cooked and Continental - and the restaurant meals were well-presented with a good choice. The hotel is an easy 15-minute walk to the city centre and less than a 10-minute drive to the University. Terrific value for money, with plenty of free parking. Highly recommended.

Room very spacious. Bed comfortable, Shower powerful. Clean. All staff very friendly and efficient. The breakfast is excellent - an extensive buffet for the cold items and cooked-to- order hot items. Nice bar on site. Quiet, despite location on a main road as the rooms are all at the back. There is car parking but we travelled by train - 15 minute walk from Canterbury West station. Back route into town only takes about 10 minutes on foot to the West Gate, so it is a really good hotel for the money. There is a restaurant on site, but we didn't use it so can't comment. Menu looked good.

AVOID at all costs. I had to sleep in my coat, hat and jumper- there was no heating all night despite it being -2 outside. This was made worse by the fact I asked for reassurances at check-in that there would be heating and, when I was feeling & requested something for my room, was told there was nothing they could do by the night porter. Absolutely horrific experience- the way they've dealt with it afterwards has been appalling too!!

My family and I were on a south of london short trip . The staff of this hotel in particular Angela , Carly and Eljay were very helpful in the frontline.. the house keeping staff ,I must say were quite proactive and sensitive… they placed a whiskey glass next to my bottle in the room without me asking for one ; while cleaning the room. 👍 The room was cleaned well too. The only issue we had as vegetarians, the choice was limited .
