Popped in on the way home on a snowy day, hadn’t booked but we were welcomed by friendly staff. It was quiet so plenty of tables it was really warm and cosy which was nice after a long drive in the snow. We were quickly served a fabulous meal which we thoroughly enjoyed. Best food in West Cumbria, always good service and very clean.

We have just experienced a very very good lunch . Good service, lovely ambience, quality food. Simple. It actually needs no more words. I have to write more as TripAdvisor requires, but the food said enough in itself . Thank you all the staff at the Trout. Well recommended .

Just returned from a fabulous stay at The Trout! Everything about our stay was spot on. Lovely room with bath and one of the best power showers we’ve had. Comfortable bed. Spotlessly clean. The evening meal in the restaurant was superb and the breakfasts are very good. We also had a packed lunch which was excellent.

We have been staying at The Trout for 30+ years. I guess we have stayed more than 20 times. So I thought it was about time I wrote a review. Of course we like it or we wouldn’t keep staying here. So, what’s the attraction? Well it has all the attributes of a really good 4 star business class hotel but with the friendliness and service of a small family run hotel - a rare combination in my experience. All the rooms are nice, but the classic rooms in the new part of the hotel are our favourites unless we splurge on the executive rooms on the river. Breakfast is excellent and the food in the restaurant is always good although somewhat limited for us as vegetarians. We have tried the other 2 main hotels in Cockermouth and always return to The Trout. If you want to be in the heart of things, there are plenty of perfectly good places to stay around Windermere and Ambleside, but if you are happy to stay somewhere a bit quieter (and much better value!), I’d highly recommend The Trout.

Excellent dinner. Muscles, and prawn dishes were perfect. Also ordered lamb - equally good.. Very comfortable surroundings for a cold evening. Not always easy to get a table but worth the wait. We will continue to be a regular customers.

We invited a friend out for lunch today 4/12/23 chose the Trout for easy access & comfortable surroundings. All three of us ordered the open flaked trout sandwich price £10 per person. There was a minimal amount of salad, a few crisps 2 slices of thick brown very ordinary bread. On top of all this bread were 3 small pieces of trout with minimal dressing. Definitely not value for money we will not be returning. We didn't complain as we did not want to embarrass my friend. Understand we should have complained at the time.

We had a great stay at The Trout. This is a lovely, cozy hotel that has been decorated to a high standard. We had a double room that had a huge , comfortable bed. The bathroom was a good size with a walk in shower with toiletries provided. The room was spotless and had a TV. A nice touch was the £50 food voucher we got to spend in the restaurant for an evening meal. The food was lovely with generous servings. We really liked how they worked the breakfast, you basically get a long list of hot ingredients and you just tell the waiter what you would like on your plat, perfect. The hotel has plenty of free parking and is easy to find with plenty of pubs within walking distance. We would definitely stay here again.

Just returned from our regular New Year celebration visit to the Trout. Once again and in the continuing challenge of finding reliable staff the hotel excelled itself in providing us a great stay. Food as always was exceptional cooked and served to us by a wonderful team of chefs and waiters. So many people to mention, but under the excellent leadership of Sue, Jo, Andy, Stephen and Martin are worthy of mention by name. The really are a group for whom nothing is too much. We so look forward now to our summer visit and wish all of the team at the Trout a safe and healthy 2023.

Four of us enjoyed an excellent New Year’s Eve meal and celebration at The Trout. The food was excellent, a great choice, beautifully cooked and presented and there was a great wine selection too. All the new year trimmings, finished off with a fun disco, the perfect way to start 2023! Our thanks and compliments to everyone involved at the hotel.

Really disappointed in the afternoon tea and service. The bread in the sandwiches was ver hard to the point of crispy. We couldn’t ask for a change or a refill of tea because there was no staff about. No one came to ask if everything was ok or if we needed anything else. When we eventually found someone it was the barman who went to tell the chef. He sent back excuses instead of an apology. Sorry but would rather go elsewhere. The Washington Hotel is much better.
