We found The Royal Horseguards Hotel online and opted to stay here due to its location. It's a quick walk to so many areas of interest: the London Eye, Westminster, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square. The Charing Cross tube station is a short walk as well and there are many good restaurants in the area. The hotel is what I call quintessentially British with equine influences, artwork and comfortable furniture in the huge lobby area. The staff is friendly and welcoming and the concierge helped us with transportation and directions on several occasions. The rooms aren't luxuriously decorated but very nice. We stayed in a suite so I can only comment on the size of that room but it was quite comfortable with a spectacular view of the Thames. If you can I would definitely upgrade to a river view. The skyline at night is gorgeous. The bed is comfortable, the bath is updated (although a very tall member of our group (6'9") did not fit in the step up shower in his junior suite and had to duck every time he walked through the hallways.) Two of our group had drinks in the Terrace Lounge and their bill for two drinks was 50 pounds. We never ate at the hotel but did enjoy a morning tea from the Nespresso coffee maker to start our day. Overall this hotel was a very good value for the money in terms of comfort, location and great staff.

We were on the return leg of a trip to Iceland and had one last day to spend in London before heading home, so we decided to book at the Royal Horseguards to stay near Trafalgar Square and the Thames. We knew it was a nice property based on the photos, but the service and attention to detail are the reason I'm writing this review. Earlier in this trip, we stayed at a larger chain hotel near Paddington station and while the service there was fine and what I expected, the Royal Horseguards exceeded expectations from reception, to curb service, to the concierge. The room was clearly very well maintained with relatively new carpeting and modern fixtures (although they fit in with the rest of the hotel's motif in terms of design), which surprised me given the age of the building and my experience at the similarly styled hotel in Paddington. In short, I didn't feel like I was in an old hotel enjoying the novelty of the experience, I felt I was in a genuinely luxurious hotel with great views that isn't nickel and diming me for use of the minibar or breakfast (a nice surprise).

Moving into the staff, everyone we interacted with was prompt and seemed happy to help however we needed. Notably, the doorman, reception, and concierge made the end of a long trip much more enjoyable than just a stopover before catching a flight home. The concierge actually was willing and capable of providing great recommendations and local knowledge (unlike the previous hotel) that we took full advantage of. Reception was great about orienting us and providing a new room key promptly when I misplaced mine after check-in. And the doorman were friendly and attentive, making sure we were well settled on arrival and calling a cab as needed.

Overall, it was a great experience and I plan on keeping the Royal Horseguards high on my list of lodging the next time I am in London!

As repeat customers we go back because of the value of money, the staff, the location and the quality of the hotel. With only a 10 minute walk to Trafalgar Square everything is within walking distance and if you want to go further afield the tube is just across the road.
The staff are great but Pervez the doorman is a star, and as local he was able to advise us on a few bits and pieces.

Myself and my wife had a reasonable stay at the Royal Horseguards Hotel in London, the Hotel is in a perfect location on the banks of the Thames and 1 minutes walk from Embankment Underground station. All of the hotel staff were friendly and helpful during our stay, however the room we stayed in had a few issues, one of these issues was that a wall mounted light in the room would not go off ! All of the lights in the room were centrally controlled by a single switch, and when this switch was activated, all of the lights in the room went off apart from this wall mounted one which was pretty bright and continued to illuminate the entire room. We reported this to the front desk, they investigated and could not fix the problem, so we removed the lightbulb from the light, next day, room service put the bulb back in, that night, we removed it again in order to get to sleep, we reported it again to the front desk the next morning. We went out for the day and when we returned that evening, the bulb had been replaced again!! So, we removed it again that evening so we could sleep. By this time it was actually becoming quite amusing and we laughed about it! The problem with the light was never fixed during our 4 days (3 nights) stay. Also there was absolutely no mobile phone reception in our room and the wireless wifi did not provide good internet access at all, sometimes we couldn't get on the internet at all. Despite all of this, we enjoyed our stay and the hotel is ideally located in central London. We would stay here again, the staff were all friendly and helpful. But.....communication obviously does not happen between the front desk and the room servicing/cleaning team. Fantastic location, nice staff, enjoyed the bars (both the terrace bar and the inside bar in the evening).

We have stayed at The Royal Horseguards many times, originally it was a fantastic hotel in a great location, unfortunately I feel standards have dropped and it is no longer what I consider to be 5 Star.

We checked in to our room with our child but there was no extra bed set up, the bathroom had a very damp smell and was not clean around the shower area, one of the switches was no longer in use and hanging off the wall and the mini bar was very poorly stocked. After speaking to reception a bed was bought to the room and was literally squeezed in, moving the table and chairs to make space, and left very little room to manoeuvre around it, we were told there were no other rooms available so was left with the damp smelling bathroom. There used to be TV's in the bathrooms, these are now covered with pictures of the London Eye, most of the showers leak, there are no available plug points around the bed and the night time turn down service is no long offered. Many of the staff look miserable except for the concierge who is always so helpful and has remembered us from previous visits

I feel the hotel rooms, particularly the bathrooms, are in dire need of a refurbishment. I used to love this hotel, now not so much. 4 star at best.

For its Whitehall location on the Thames near the Horse Guards Building, a room booked here is a bargain. The concierge of the adjacent National Liberal Club recommended it to us. The venerable Victorian building has modern amenities, which gives the hotel a feel of both tradition and comfortable convenience. The interior shuns high-end luxury and flashy décor in favor of a genuinely welcoming staff, starting with a very genial doorman. It’s in walking distance of Trafalgar Square for the National Gallery and the Embankment station of the Underground. We even walked to Covent Garden and a West End theater. There are few shopping and restaurant opportunities in the immediate area, which translates into very quiet streets. But the distinguished adjacent buildings assure the sense of a “good address.” And the number of black-tie holiday parties we observed confirmed it. The buffet breakfast offered an expansive selection of the usual English items with a few continental touches. Our room was comfortable, clean and in excellent working order. We have already recommended it to friends.

This used to be my go to Gem since 2003 every year. It’d been a few years due to covid and some life events so I was excited to get back to my old friend last week. I could not have been more disheartened or disappointed in my stay and the status of this hotel.
Over my 20 plus years I have stayed in the various room offerings the hotel offers. The past 10 plus years I have always opted for a suite which typically has 2 bathrooms which is great for traveling. The service and room amenities were always great for my needs, and had a nice turndown service. Most off the services and nice amenities are absolutely gone.
Suite 1: Toes nails on the floor as you walked in the main entrance and clearly hadn’t been cleaned. The room itself had so many broken items down to the toilet paper holder.
We immediately said something to the management, which I always feel uncomfortable complaining but there were toenails on the floor!
Suite 2: We had to wait a day for because of occupancy of the hotel. This room was also two levels. On the top floor with the view the air worked pretty well. The main floor where the bedroom and bathroom were the air-conditioning was broken. It would not go up, down or turn off for that matter. We went downstairs and mentioned it was not working which again now I am embarrassed as this is complaint #2. The short and long of the story is they never fixed the air and the end solution was 2 fans in our room for the entirety of our stay.
Aside from the air not working in this room there were a number of other issues to lights not working, being burnt out, the basic amenities not functioning etc.
However, we decided we were not going to be the people who complain the whole time because we would rather try to enjoy London. It was not worth trying to get a room across the street and lose the thousands I had already paid to this hotel.
I am absolutely furiously at the absurd amount of money I was charged per night for a suite in which I had to have fans blowing on my face just to try and sleep.
I don’t believe after this experience I will return again and encourage others there are better luxury options even close by that are lovely.

Dear TravelDenver1973, First and foremost thank you for taking the time to leave your insightful feedback. Travelled with my daughter and grandson. We chose The Royal Horseguards because of the location and how close it was to most of the attractions we wanted to visit.
We arrived early due to our train being cancelled the night before so we had to re-arranged onto an earlier train so did not expect our room to be ready but were happy to leave suitcases and head out.
On arrival Eliecer the Front of House Manager went above and beyond to change rooms around so we could get checked in straight away and make the most of our time in London which we really appreciated as we had a busy schedule so meant we didn't have to return to unpack etc.
We found the hotel staff to be very helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble.
The breakfast was lovely, no complaints.
Room was comfortable, air con worked well which was good as it was very warm at the time, no issues. Lifts were quick, never had to wait long.
In a great location, very close to Downing Street, The London Eye and Trafalgar Square.
Only thing the could be improved was the Terrace Bar as there was only 1 person making the drinks which meant to waiters were waiting a long time to bring them and getting flustered so waited around half an hour for 2 spritz and a small bottle of water and it cost £42 as there is a 12.5% service charge added to everything in London.
The hotel is a beautiful, historic building, fresh flowers in reception every day. Eliecer and his staff went above and beyond to be helpful and friendly and make a fuss of my grandson.
Thank you for a lovely break.
I would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.

We bought a voucher with buy a gift for a 2 course bottomless brunch – excellent value for money.

I telephoned to book a table and was offered 330pm which fitted in perfectly.

Upon arrival, the hotel looked very plush, we checked in at the desk and gave in our vouchers, which were going to be checked and submitted in to their system, and were guided to take a seat while this was processed.

20 minutes later, we were approached and asked for our voucher, which I advised had already been taken

10 minutes later, we were told our table was ready.

We were taken to the table, which obviously had not been cleared away, and then told to take a seat outside again, while the table was cleared.

Someone came out and told us to have a drink at the bar while the table was laid up, we asked if it would be complimentary due to the shambles of being seated, they said yes.

Upon entering the bar, there were no seats, so we were told to sit back at our original table and they would bring the drinks out.

Soon as we sat down, we were led to our table and the drinks from the bar were delivered to our table.

The drink choices were wine beer and prosecco.

The food choices were excellent and we all really enjoyed the food, you can opt for a 3rd course, but we declined as the food was lovely and very filling.

The service was poor, we had to keep asking for drinks as our server kept disappearing to the kitchen we presume.

To add, the toilets in the hotel were shocking, very dirty and some toilets had no toilet rolls, very unusual for a hotel of this calibre.

We really are not moaners, if you read my previous reviews, there are very few unsatisfactory ones.

We all felt that the hotel is severely understaffed.

Would not return based on the service

The gym didn’t open until 07.00 and that doesn’t work for people wanting to train before working. No USB plugs by the bed and only one 3 pin plug point and that was hard to get to. The rooms furniture is either ‘period’ or dated, I guess that depends on your perspective. The room was very clean and the bed very comfortable. It’s a good location and a very nice area.
I didn’t dine in the hotel.

I had a garden king room. It was fantastic. But if you must choose one or the other my answer then would depend on how long you will be staying and when. If it's a short term stay of only 2 days or so I'd go with the garden room, especially if you're staying while it's warm outside. The fresh air from the windows that open slightly is wonderful. However, if you're staying 3 days or more then I'd suggest the king room. The extra space in the room will be truly appreciated. I loved the garden king room because of all that and at night you get to see the London Eye all lit up in its various colors.
