The room was decorated well, clean and nicely furnished, spacious for 3 people. The downside of the stay was the bathroom, there was a leak from the base of the toilet, reported and never fixed, therefore there was a puddle of water permanently on the floor throughout our stay. Hairdryer was touch and go sometimes worked sometimes it did not. The shower stand is loose and falls apart when you remove the showerhead from the stand, the water was never hot, only warm, not very comfortable on a cold winters day in December. The door to the bathroom did not close due to apparently a past experience of a child locking themselves inside, so there is no way to close the door properly we had to put the bathroom rubbish bin against the door as a small weight to stop it from opening. The rooms were not cleaned daily with the excuse of covid being used that they didn’t want to cross-contaminate guests etc … and would only enter the room upon request, we, therefore, asked for fresh towels which we received, however, we asked for toilet paper replacement which we didn’t get and when I rang to complain about it I was told “surely 1 toilet roll was enough” for 3 adults! In general, the room was ok with tea and coffee making facilities however the guest house needs to perhaps refurbish their bathroom, also lacking shelves or somewhere to put toiletries.

Martel Guest House is located about a ten minute walk from the centre of Golders Green, near the Tube and Bus Interchange. It is a large detached house with parking on the pathway in the middle of a quiet suburban street called ‘The Ridgeway’ just behind the High Street. You can spot the house because the front of the house is fully tiled with old red tiles. The street is not a rat run for cars. You can get the 139 Bus from Trafalgar Square to Golders Green Interchange going past Abbey Road recording studio. You can get to central London by the northern line Edgeware branch on the London Underground. I had room number 7 on the first floor, which can be setup as a family room and accessed via the main staircase. The rooms are locked by an old fashioned dead lock. So you need to keep the key on you. Access to the guest house front door is by a door code on the front door. The owner asks you to take a photo with your smart phone of the code written down on a piece of paper before you go out. The beds were clean and comfortable with a good mattress and sheets. There was a flat screen T.V. in the room. The guest house is warm, with good central heating that remained on during the night. It is also clean and offers a breakfast, down in the kitchen pre-cooked by the house keeper 'Olive'. This is included in the cost of the room at booking. They serve buffet style English breakfasts. The eating area has a nice patio window overlooking the large back garden. Breakfast times are shown on the back of the room door. The bathroom was clean and modern with a power shower and a mixer tap shower. The power shower had the shower attachment missing so I used the mixer tap. There was plenty hot water so I had a bath instead. A number of fresh clean towers are available. There was complimentary tea and coffee and a fridge in the room. Free wifi is provided in all areas. The owner ‘Phil’ was on hand to see to any problems.

The picture gave the impression of a spacious bedroom with a large double bed . In fact the room was tiny with the smallest double possible crammed in and a poky bathroom that was an invitation to slip and fall . The breakfast was totally tasteless and meagre . Will not be visiting again .

Even though the guest house does not have curb appeal, the interior is surprisingly good. Breakfast is included I am not really a breakfast person but did make a point of duty to visit the breakfast room, which is compact with outdoor sitting on the small patio in the garden Had a single room, small but every inch well used, with ample space for a TV, cupboard, fridge, safe, coffee/tea station and coffee machine and A/C. The room is tastefully decorated in black. The bathroom or rather a wet cell was clean but dated, the grouting is in need of repair. Comfortable single bed, which was made every day, regular change of towels and a super-fast Wifi. View from the window is the neighbour's wall! Location is very good a 5 minutes walk to the Underground and bus station. The owner is pleasant and friendly.

I was in London for 2 nights for a business trip and stayed at Martel. Just what I needed! A small homely and clean place in the Jewish neighborhood close to synagogues and Kosher restaurants. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful and the rooms were quiet. A pity their breakfast (which looked very good) was not Kosher. The bathroom was a little too small with a very noisy hot water pump system. On the whole I would recommend and return there myself. Very good value for money.
