We got this as a very late coach short stay at an unbelievable price which included half board. The hotel is in a prime position overlooking Whitby and can see that in its heyday, it would have been the elite hotel of Whitby. However, everything about the hotel needs refurbishing. The decor, carpets, paintwork, windows, the revolving door at reception,... More

Well we finally arrived at the hotel after an adventurous drive, which took 16 hours from our home down south. The weather was terrible rain and wind all the way, but thanks to our driver Mike, who was fantastic, and had the drive of his life, he got us all there safely. The rest of the week was good, with... Just returned from a self drive Turkey & Tinsel break & what a great time we had. Unfortunately we were there when there was the most horrendous storm. The wind & rain found its way through very ill fitting windows making it quite cold in the bedroom & bathroom. Appreciate that the hotel is a listed building but something needs... More

We all know Shearings / Bay Hotels have seen better days, but this one in Whitby really does need some TLC. Had five days Turkey and Tinsel at the end of November and the hotel was cold throughout. No heat at all in the mornings, just an electric fire you had to switch on yourself. The dining room was no... More

We had a 5 day mid-week break in Nov 2016. Not bad for the money. We had a nice top floor room, with 1 double & 1 single bed, view facing the Abbey. Food, service was slow, a number of times it was 45 mins before we ordered! The food was only 'luke' warm most of the time, as if... More

Myself and my partner couldn't afford to go aboard this year, so we thought we would try a shearings coach trip holiday. Despite being the youngest on it we had a fantastic time. I didn't realise all the planning and organising that went on behind the scenes. It ran like clock work really. The hotel was great, fab views as... More

Very pleasant hotel with a lot of history. A big let down would be the lift to upper floors. Very small and could only hold 4 people at a time. Rooms were more modern with good colour scheme. Comfy bed which is a bonus. Food adequate with a reasonable choice. Not large however quite filling. Staff good all round with... More

I appreciate you taking the time to share your review. I'm pleased to see your room and meals were to your liking. Your comments regarding the team are greatly appreciated. Whilst the lift may be a little smaller than perhaps expected, it does cope very well with the demand in general. We hope to welcome you back to the Royal... More

Booked a sea view and paid £28 extra, it was on the ground floor and was a car view. Walked into our room and people were getting out of their car outside and waved to us when we turned the light on. Immediately asked to be moved before unpacking, we were told all rooms were full except for a double,... More

I’m sorry to see you were disappointed with your allocated room. Our ground floor rooms are often requested. With the hotel being full there was unfortunately no other rooms available. I hope the sea view supplement refunded went some way to compensating. We did have an issue with the water in a small number of rooms which was discussed with... More
