Internet doesn't work upper floors. Service wonderful, breakfast great, dogs welcome (loved that even though we didn't have ours with us). Tub as big as a lake! Best fish & chips in the whole UK to be found in this village. So picturesque I want to move here!

Dog friendly in the upstairs lounge area that was complete with a cosy fireplace & a choice of board games. The gin cocktails were lovely, we had the rose duet and a rhubarb and ginger, both were lovely. The tomato soup was the best we've ever eaten! The only problem was that there wasn't more of it!

Despite advertising themselves as dog friendly we were not allowed to use the bar restaurant, were consigned to a cold, depressing back room and were only offered an inferior room ( found this out during our nights stay ) Customer service was appalling.

Staff are excellent but food very expensive. Wine also expensive, prosseco £25! I thought choice of starters, mains and sweets were poor with only one vegetarian and no chicken dishes. Only went for food.

We've eaten here before and it was delicious, seafood platter to share between 2. This time we had mussels and quail 2 wysiwyg for starters and pork 2 ways and sirloin steak for mains, we weren't disappointed, again the food was lovely.

Stayed 1 night in the Scorsby room, smallish room, with no view but this wasn't a problem, the room was clean, comfortable and furnishings were lovely. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Breakfast was excellent and there was a good choice. The hotel has plenty of charecter and is in the heart of old Whitby. Downside, as this...

Stayed for just one night on a good value dinner bed and breakfast deal .Our room was large -clean and comfortable . Dinner was very good -served in the dining room that was busy and had a good atmosphere . My only complaint was my main course had everything piled on the plate and would have been much better had...

I ordered muscles which were overcooked, I ate only a few. It came in cream with no seasoning or wine, and was a heavy, greasy, disgusting soup. I had half a lobster. Again over cooked and AGAIN, the disgusting heavy sauce without seasoning; again, I couldn't finish it, it was so disgusting. I had one cocktail and it came to...

Our local group came here for our Christmas meal out. We had the upstairs room laid out for all 22 of us, so the room was festive and cosy. The staff had kept the list of all our menu choices so each person was served their meal by name which was a nice touch. Everyone was happy with their meal,...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
